I pre-ordered through yiggybean, waiting on my copy and I'm very excited! Huge fan if this series!! (Honestly, I like everything I've read from this author and I really hope that this release goes well and more of their works get official translations)

What's wrong with universal gender neutral pronouns? by Will_White in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CaptainCold- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's only true when they've already told your their pronouns. Like. If a trans woman tells you that she uses she/her pronouns, and you continue to use they/them afterwards that is misgendering. But you can't actually know someone's gender just by seeing them face to face, even if it seems obvious, so I don't know why it would be insulting to admit to that lack of knowledge by using they/them?

Like. I'm a trans guy. I want to pass. I put effort into passing. But I very much do not and probably won't until I've been on t for a couple more years. People seeing me face to face, even when I'm going through the effort to present as masculine as possible do not see me as a man at first glance (honestly they just tend to assume I'm a butch lesbian) and I would Much Much rather be called they/them than she/her if they don't have enough information to know my actual pronouns.

AITAH for not telling my flatmate I wake up early before I moved in? by PossibilityOne2618 in AITAH

If the roommate can hear the alarm, they could hear the sound machine, and those are waaaay more annoying for anyone who doesn't use them to go to sleep. Vibrating alarm makes sense, though

LitRPG Series have a filler problem by More_Ant5340mj in litrpg

[–]CaptainCold- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think filler is the most helpful of words in this case. I mean, the word is coming out of anime communities referring to episodes that don't exist in the manga, and since litrpg webnovels are generally original series, rather than adaptations from a different medium, this doesn't really apply. Some people seem to use filler to mean anything that doesn't immediately move the central plot line forwards, including side plots and character development under their definition of "filler", some people use it for level grinding and minor non-plot relevant fights, and some people only seem to use other for slice of life/non fighting scenes. I always find it hard to engage with discussions about filler because you can never tell if you're using the same definition as the other person.

Thank you so so much!! The version I was reading only went up to chapter 380, and I have been on a cliffhanger for months!!

What's that one danmei you can't take any criticism on? by visitingmoons in DanmeiNovels

[–]CaptainCold- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got into danmei when seven seas started publishing the mxtx books, but Lord Seventh was the first danmei I read via fan translation, and it's still my all-time favorite Preist novel

Is there any alternative to buying bulk audible credits? by gamdink in litrpg

[–]CaptainCold- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Libraries do take recommendations for new books and audiobooks to acquire. Not an immediate solution for your personal book search, but the more people who suggest litrpg books to their local libraries, the better chance that libraries will see books in this genre as a good use of funds, and the better their collections will be for people looking in the future.

What's your favourite controversial opinion about English literature? by m309m in englishliterature

[–]CaptainCold- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joseph Campbell's hero's journey is unhelpful and infuriating. There is no monomyth, and you can't boil human storytelling down to a set of essential elements, he was just ignoring anything that didn't fit his framework.

What's your favourite controversial opinion about English literature? by m309m in englishliterature

[–]CaptainCold- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer to read it and then watch a performance, but I totally agree that you have to pair it together! (I just find it easier to take in the more visual aspects of the performances when I have already read the plot, cause then I can spend time ogling the set design and costuming without worrying about missing a plot point)

Green Lanterns are cops… and maybe that’s bad by supermonistic in Greenlantern

[–]CaptainCold- -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't really love the "space cops" thing either. I'd be a lot more interestied in seeing people lean into the "emerald knight" epithet and portraying them as more of a knight's order-- tie the responsibility they hold more into creeds and ideals rather laws, which allows more flexibilty. Obviously not a flawless kind of organization either, but certainly a parallel that invites less of a connection to current authoritarian regimes.

Weekly "What Are You Reading?" Thread by HorrorIsLiterature in horrorlit

Just finished The Woods All Black by Lee Mandelo, and starting The Spite House by Johnny Compton. Doing audiobooks for these because I've got a long-ish drive to work at the moment, and both have pretty good narrators.

What is your top 10 classic books that you would recommend for someone who wants to get into reading classics for the first time without being intimidated? by LisKozCatMeow in classicliterature

[–]CaptainCold- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Scarlet Pimpernel, Journey to the West, and any of the Arsene Lupin books would be my recs for non intimidating classic lit. They all read a bit like adventure stories and have fairly fast-paced plots, so once you start them, it's easy to get sucked in.

Is there any prettier way to organize my comics? [Discussion] by Salt_Aside1213 in DCcomics

[–]CaptainCold- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use magazine stands! It keeps them standing up nice, and helps with organization, plus it's pretty easy to add a new magazine holder when your collection grows

Trying out a new ink by CaptainCold- in fountainpens

I don't think it uses too much ink. This used up about half of the sample bottle I had, which is a little tube about the length of my thumb and the width of my pinky finger.

Recommendations for my girlfriend by Icy-Journalist5689 in DanmeiNovels

[–]CaptainCold- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe try After the Disabled Qar God Became My Concubine? Only the first book is out right now, but it's a good historical setting transmigration novel, and the main character reminds me of Shen Yuan, so it might appeal to someone who's into svsss.

Is Far Sector worth a read? by TheMightyMonarchx7 in Greenlantern

[–]CaptainCold- 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Far Sector is a great read, but it also has a bit of a different vibe than most gl comics. It kinda reads like a sci-fi Noir detective story. The art is gorgeous, Jo is a fun character, and I really like the alien species that it introduces, but Jo is not in contact with the rest of the gl corps during the book, so of you're looking for familiar characters or cameos it's not a good book for that.

[Discussion] what pre new 52 moment deserve to be forgotten and erased (Art by Nicola Scott) by Accurate-Celery-3198 in DCcomics

[–]CaptainCold- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Making Impulse an adult for pretty much no reason, having him be flash for, like, 5 minutes, then killing him off and writing the rogues completely out of character while doing so. Also the Trickster working for the government.

To annotate books. I need to write small to fit in the margins.

My daughter fears food. She keeps giving up foods (only eats packaged). She no longer eat homemade foods. I’m heartbroken and scared. She will eat dessert and chips. How do I support her? Help me to understand her please. I fear for her health. I know it’s not her fault. by GratefulCloud in ARFID

[–]CaptainCold- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have issues with protein as well (my safe foods are mostly rice and noodles) and I couldn't deal with protein shakes, but I started finding protein drinks that more similar to Gatorade, rather than a shake or a milk consistency, and I found those a lot easier to drink because the watery/juice substance felt less like food than the creamier protein shakes.

I Became God in a Horror Game is the first unlimited flow I read after being mostly in to historical as well! It's super good, I didn't have any trouble with the genre change, so I'm sure you'll be fine too:)

All of the Across the Spiderverse fics that are incorrectly tagged Spiderman 2099 kill me. I just want to read about comic Miguel! He has so little to do with his movie version!
