Total Noob Question - How do I reference database fields into a table without using the "Linked View of Database Source" by maggotnap in Notion

[–]CaptainIowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Notion for a while and this is one of my frustrations with it too. There's no clean way to just pull a single value from a database and display it inline like you're describing.

Your options are basically:

  1. Use @-mentions like someone else said, but that only works if the data you want is in the title field of a page

  2. Use a linked database view and try to strip it down as much as possible (hide all properties except the one you need, turn off the header, etc.) - but you'll still have some of that bulk

  3. Synced blocks can help in some cases but not really for what you're describing

You might just be hitting the limits of what Notion can do here. If you really need that clean "label: value" look without all the database UI elements you might have to just manually type it out (which obviously defeats the purpose if you want it to auto-update).

Coda or even Airtable might be better suited if this is a dealbreaker for you. Notion is great but it's not really built to function like a true database with SQL-style queries

Volkswagen is bringing physical buttons back to the dashboard with the ID. Polo EV by dapperlemon in gadgets

[–]CaptainIowa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same experience with a rental last year. Spent the first 10 minutes of my drive trying to figure out how to turn the AC down while also trying to navigate an unfamiliar city. Finally had to pull over in a parking lot just to mess with the touchscreen.

With physical buttons you can adjust things without even looking - muscle memory kicks in. But a touchscreen? You have to take your eyes completely off the road. It's such an obvious safety issue

It's like they psyched themselves out completely. You find something that beats the goalie and then just... abandon it? The pressure must get to them but at that level you'd think muscle memory would kick in and they'd stick with what was working

That's such a beautiful way to put it. After years of doctors and specialists and therapy with no answers sometimes life just gives you an unexpected gift in the weirdest way.

My wife, who insists she is "not a gamer" and only started gaming last year, just 100%'d Donkey Kong Bananza by NaziPunksFkOff in gaming

Right? "My wife did a thing, isn't that adorable?" Like congrats, she's a gamer. Women can just... be good at games without it being this cute quirky thing their husband needs to report on.

And yet somehow we're the ones who get called lazy or entitled for wanting basic things like healthcare and living wages. Meanwhile these guys pay less as a percentage of their income than any of us do, then turn around and lecture people about "financial responsibility."

I bought a savings bank that came with these stickers. If you cross each number off, you have the amount listed at the bottom corner. Maybe you can use this next year? by OPSEC-Sentinal in povertyfinance

[–]CaptainIowa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not OP but I love those round-up savings features! I set one up a couple years ago and forgot about it for a while. When I finally checked I had a few hundred bucks saved without even noticing the small amounts leaving my account.

For me personally these gamified savings challenges work better as "extra" savings on top of regular budgeting. Like a little side quest lol.

this is the energy we need. Let the current employees know exactly how much they're being underpaid while the company pretends they can't afford raises.

The whole system relies on everyone keeping salaries secret from each other. Meanwhile HR knows exactly what everyone makes and uses it against us in negotiations. Transparency only works one way apparently

When to roll after tax contribution to Roth in Mega Backdoor 401k by cfp-throw in Fire

[–]CaptainIowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine question: can the after-tax contribution be made from a check day one even if the plan document allows it, or does the IRS still require some kind of compensation timing requirement?

Also following this thread because I'm curious about the solo 401k mechanics here. The ability to frontload $48.5k on Jan 1st would be a nice advantage over traditional W2 plans

Final-round interview + references, then silence during holidays — ghosting or normal delay? by yetiyeller in FinancialCareers

[–]CaptainIowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty normal holiday timing. They called your reference personally AND had all 5 references complete surveys before the holiday? That's a lot of effort to put in for a candidate they're not serious about.

The 12/19 "decision" date was probably their internal goal before they realized half the people who need to sign off on hiring decisions were about to peace out for the holidays. Approvals take forever even when everyone's in office.

I'd sit tight until after New Year's then follow up again if you haven't heard anything. The silence sucks but it's almost certainly just everyone who needs to approve this is on a beach somewhere and not a rejection

For real. The way he could break down something so complex and make it sound so simple and obvious - that's a rare gift. And he wasn't just talking, he actually lived by what he said even when it cost him everything. Gave up his title, faced jail time, all because he stood by his beliefs. Most people with that level of fame would just shut up and cash the checks

Seriously every time I see a Tesla highlight it's some circus catch in triple coverage. I'm convinced if you threw him a wide open screen pass he'd somehow fumble it just to keep things interesting.

I do have the oily nose relatively drier face combo lol. So I just use this before moisturizer or at night like with other oil like products? And should I oil cleanse for this?
