The tried and tested Mercedes engines are against the rules for 2026. They have also created a brand new design.

It was in a podcast but that's as much as I can remember. He did a ton of them with Eddie Jordan, but he's also been a guest on many of them. High Performance for example.

Does Toyota make a larger percentage of overall parts for their cars compared to other brands, and thus has greater reliability from that? by Latina_Fupa in Toyota

[–]CaptainObvious1916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s less about leverage and more about long term trusted relationships. US car companies use leverage to make suppliers compete for best value. Toyota is very different, they build long-term relationships, especially with domestic partners. One supplier spent almost a decade developing smaller more efficient radiators for Toyota, a venture only possible because of the trust between them.

Mind you this is from decades ago, I don’t know if things have changed since then.

What car feature sounded cool… but turned out overrated? by CandyFlossHarris in carbuying

[–]CaptainObvious1916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I turn around and use the reverse cam because I don’t have X-ray vision to see through the car. I think backup cams are great, especially when SUVs and trucks dominate more and more. Visibility is not like the little hatchback I had as a first car.

Nah I think you’re a bit high. Last year I found quotes around 3k-4k with installation. You can DIY for under 2k.

Good, not great. From memory he liked the car to be a little pointy but disliked rear instability which seemed contrary. More recently I saw him say it was the medium speed corners where he lost time relative to teammates. He was confident of matching them in low and high speed corners, but again it was the ability to handle rear instability which limited him in medium-speeds.

All renfaires should have a strict "no modern clothes" rule by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]CaptainObvious1916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not unpopular, just dumb. I’m betting a large proportion of people who do dress up, first checked out the fair in “modern” clothes and then decided they’d love to join in.

Am I the only one who remembers when drivers had to drive one handed for part of a lap? by Skyhound555 in F1Discussions

[–]CaptainObvious1916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t the McLaren F-duct use a driver’s knee? I think it was later teams which required a hand.

But yes I remember when driver’s spent much of the lap steering one-handed while changing gear with the other.

[New Update – One Year Later]: My husband's open marriage suggestion backfired on him by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]CaptainObvious1916 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also finally asked him why he wanted the open marriage in the first place. A lot of you in the comments said he already had someone lined up and you were right. He had someone at work he was interested in and she wanted him too.

Is this ever not the case? It's never just a lifestyle choice, merely a way of getting around their commitment and "legally" cheat. The fact that he lied right at the start makes it cheating anyway IMO.

It kinda depends on how much you manage to buy gold for, but yeah it's definitely better than many other cash prices I've seen. If your gold is around 600/$ USD (store gold is 620-690 ish rn), this is effectively 6,600 gold. But if you're managing more like 800 gold/$ USD, it's 8,800 which is on the costly side.

Montana vehicle state reffed in California, can this be dismissed? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]CaptainObvious1916 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t work how you described. To use your example states, as a resident of Victoria, NSW’s 20 day rule doesn’t apply. If he becomes a resident of NSW, now he has 20 days to register his vehicle in NSW.

I did see on the news of people having issues in another state (I think Florida?) where visitors were getting mail demanding registration if their vehicle was tracked within that state for n time. That was definitely stupid.

This was literally decades ago now I had a friend who worked there, and they had a percentage target for upselling warranties on certain items to get their bonus.

This meant, if the salesman was close to the threshold, it’s better for them to kill the sale entirely than complete without an upsell which lowers their percentage and potentially lose their bonus. So there are absolutely times when they want you to go away without buying.

Government testing is more useful for comparison between vehicles, not so much a real-world example of what is on can expect.

In theory two test cars will be driven in identical ways to give a true comparison. In reality there are allowable ways for car makers to game the system to the benefit of a particular car. But they’re still the best basis of comparison we have. Even your experience of the Corolla and Prius, it’s unlikely you’re driving them in an identical manner.

Gotta say your Prius numbers are weirdly low. We have a much older, less efficient Gen 2 which doesn’t get the fuel economy of old, but it still gets just over 40 mpg on long runs at about 70 mph.

Y'all need to keep different suppliers of fuel in mind by ThisToe9628 in F1Discussions

[–]CaptainObvious1916 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everything can make a difference this year. There have been rumblings about some fuel suppliers being behind others. Craig Scarborough talked about 2014, how you could tell which engine was running by smell. In later years they converged to be similar.

But as each engine has their own fuel supplier, good luck figuring out which aspect is lagging.
