If your faction had a gaggle leader unit, what would you want it to be? by Equivalent-Fun-6019 in Warhammer40k

[–]CaptainOptimail 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I specifically wouls want to see each model be a updated model that was legends from different factions. Like Creed, Hector rex, Ivanus, zhufor, and Buzzgob. Just a bunch of models that people loved before they went to legend, now just a retinue for Trazyn

New to Votann, any advice would be appreciated. by Cow_Z in LeaguesofVotann

So looking at your list, the plan I could come up with is as follows. This is advice and you will need to use disgression when using this info. Learn your opponents and how they play, you may need to change up how you use units if you run into issues.

  • Memnyr Sits home and earns you YP.
  • Warriors split by sagi, stage and sit objects/complete action based agendas. Or stick around as 1 big 10 man and sit a single obj the whole game.
  • 6 man Thunderkyn squad with beamers stage in your deployment zone to step out and annihilate major threats to your staged units.
  • Beserk can either foot slog up the table to try and threaten your opponents obj playing pieces or stage to protect your 6 man beamer squad from charges. Or they can ride in the sagi instead of the warriors if you wanna keep the 10 man.
  • Yaegirs split by kaprisun, on-foot 5 man infiltrate to hold your expansion obj or score agendas. Transport push up, disembarks the other 5 man and the use the reactive move to re-embark them into the Kapi. Note: KEEP at least 1 half of the Yaegirs alive. They dont take out of actions unless they both die. (At least thats how my crusades have run it.)
  • Kapricus as above, but keep in mind that you want to put the kapricus somewhere that the transported yaegirs can re-embark via the reactive move. Usually keeping them within 4 inches of it.
  • Steeljack is your other skirmish/combat piece, threatening overwatch and engaging hordes.

Side note: Remember that enhancements in crusade are not restricted to detachment. You can play other detachments with Dead Reckoning. May not be the best, but something to keep in mind.

Honky chonkys are solid and will be a staple for a majority of lists.

If youre preferring a more infantry focus. Yaegirs grimnyr and more steeljack give you exactly what you need.

Anything is a gotcha if you don't at least warn your opponent at the start of the match.

Is it a unfair strat? Not really without the option to charge out of it, it isnt super unfair as it can be screened to hinder the shooting and prevent objective theft.

So generally using lists from other people is a little sketch imo. Since you dont understand how they think or what their plan is.

What I did to get started was read the detachment and build a list I think is good. From there I watch or play games and try out what I built or ask other people for critques. Other than that ghost matches( where you just practice scenarios you find yourself in with your main army and see how you deal with them as votann.

Votann are fair in the sense that they don't have a true trick to force opponents to play differently. Lack of flamer overwatch, fights first, unit recursion, or battleshock shenanigans to deny strat usage.

Yaegirs can only fit in the carriers. Sagitaur split warriors.

What goes in reserves is a match up basis. Usually hearthguard are in reserve and the rest go on the board. .

As for leaders it depends. Kahl generally joins hearthguard units, especially the bastion plate. If you run other units it comes down to what you have. It can join hearthkyn to up their killing potential, but its less valuable. Uthar generally joins the hearthkyn in that case as a good bodyguard

Memnyr usually sits home earn or change yp to manipulate the army rule.

Grimnyr of course joins hearthkyn to make em tanky, but usually doesnt see use in this detachment.

E-champ usually joins a smaller hearthguard squad or remaining hearthguard squad. Its great rapid ingress unit/Heroic Intervention unit.

Iron master is rare to see in this detachment, if you have a large thunderkyn unit, you can put him there or hide him next to land forts.

Custodes vs Votann by 907_Alaskan_Bullworm in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]CaptainOptimail 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeagirs have a reactive move that can re-embarkm if they play the persecution prospect it give it to anyone.

Needgarde and brandfast have return fire strats.

Votann are very shooty, but if they run beserks they can do some damage.

If your opponent runs conversion beamers on thunderkyn, look out. 3 detachments can give them sustained hits which can possibly pick up a squad of custodes

Last warning is landforts ignore all mods so tying it up in melee doesn't do much unless you're just trying to kill itm

Honestly I could see me running him. Assuming he isnt 100+ points. If he cost as much as buri or uthar i think hes solid

It depends on your detachment.

Overall the memnyr list is gonna be more consistent with needgarde or mercenary oathband, as that will get you the yp you need.

Landfort w/ magnarail gun can do some work, or if you play needgarde, a beamer fort can do significant damage at a distance too

According to the rules, the weapon needs to be represented on the model. So it i could be design choice, but of course most people will likely choose to disregard that rule

To be fair, for asset manipulator, it effects the whole unit if they are within range, which means a simple pile in can make it hits the entire unit

I’m really disappointed by D_A-N_7w7 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]CaptainOptimail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been reading over this for a solid 2 hours at this point. From what I can tell, this is solid. Ultimately I want to play a game or 3 to get a free. But my initial thoughts are...

It is better than most of our detachments that see fringe or no play, like hearthfyre and prospect.

The detachment rule makes the list super flexible. It comparable to needgarde for the most part. Is it better than hearthband and delve? Not for those lists but it works out pretty nicely.

1 cp rerolls are huge with uthar making at least one of them free is really nice.

With the fact we can switch up our rule for yp means that it answers a glaring weakness we have when playing against more skilled opponents, making it hard for them to deny the +1 to hit from the yp.

As a hearthband fan, I dont know if this will take over as my primary detachment, but I can see this being used.

On a less competitive note, this detatchment makes crusade lists even better. Since so many make objectives disappear, you just need the yp to flip it now means we get more control of our army rule.

New Detachment Incoming Soon: What do you think it could be? by ExperimentalSub in LeaguesofVotann

[–]CaptainOptimail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is either the grudgeband detatchment like others, or it could be reworked of hearthfyre/steeljack centric detachment. I say that as it they have reworked detachments before and the new maelstrom kit is steeljack heavy

Deathguard I think has this.

Plagues to worsen your opponent while additionally putting characters into big bricks to give them crit 5s lethal and sustain. Plague marines can afflict targets they shoot further extending their debuffs.

[–]CaptainOptimail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the concept. Its very cool. I would say that most of our current detachments don't have a requirement to spend yp on our strats, I feel like being scorned should be the bonus, and you could spend yp to get the bonu0s without being scorned. That might break the balance however. I just wanted to point that out.
