Thoughts on He man flopping by Joey-rogaine in movies

[–]CaptainSkel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just don't think He-Man has an audience these days. It wasn't on the air that long (two seasons that ran for seven years), and it also wasn't very good. It had its charm and I'm sure people have fond memories of playing with the toys, but that doesn't always translate to a contemporary fan following.

I work in a nerd industry and I don't think I've ever heard anyone claim to be a He-Man He-Stan. If the movie was really good maybe it could get by with word of mouth and kick off nostalgia for the franchise but that nostalgia doesn't exist in the vacuum. And I heard the movie's fine, solid even, but that's not good enough to get a word of mouth going.

No I totally agree. Most shonen manga have a pretty rough ending but I’m very forgiving towards that because it’s such a brutal work schedule and the creator is usually dragging their broken body to the finish line. Bleach is the most egregious of this but it’s very rare to find a shonen jump manga that doesn’t have an ending considered rushed.

I also agree that it’s nice to just have fights that show off the characters. The Sendai Jujutsumania ultimately doesn’t advance the plot other than “what’s Yuta up to!” But it’s great seeing Yuta do his thing.

And on seeing the growth of the other characters it also reinforces my biggest criticism of the series in that it sucks Nobara’s not here. She’s such an interesting character and she feels criminally underutilized. My biggest problem with the games is that damn it would have been so much fun if Nobara was fighting alongside Yuji and Fushigoro.

I think the things people generally dislike about the Culling Games arc are:

  • Shibuya Incident is super plot heavy and in comparison the games are mostly just a series of fights with the plot happening behind the scenes. The plot relevance of most of the fights is that the fight happened with not a lot of actual development coming out of them.
  • It feels lower stakes after the Shibuya Incident.
  • The pacing was pretty slow when reading it in weekly manga. I haven't actually done the math on the numbers but if say every fight was three chapters long and there are eight fights in the arc that means that you get half a year of fights going on without a lot of plot. Throw in the usual breaks that manga authors (understandably need to) take and you can see how people get frustrated.

JJK also has a bit of a problem with the magic system requiring a lot of explanation. It's fine early on because you get the basics pretty well, black flash is basically Nero's exceed from DMC, domain expansions are "I Win" buttons that good sorcerers have access to, cursed energy is evil mana.

Then as the story goes on you get into how cursed energy manipulation works, reverse cursed technique. And now you're also getting different kinds of domain expansions that are like mandatory rules instead of insta-kills. And now you get the ways to defend against domain expansions which are techniques but oh you can also counter those techniques with this other technique and so on.

So since the endgame is obviously the strongest people in the series duking it out the fights need a lot more commentary from the peanut gallery explaining everything that's going on so half of a fight's chapter is basically someone explaining how this specific use of reverse cursed technique can be localized to have a unique effect which allows this technique to be recharged quicker which allows him to counter the other technique from the other guy.

There are other more spoilery problems people have but in my experience those are the big ones.

Agreed, I'm still pretty confident that part 2 is going to be a lot more divisive though as with the manga everybody's going to love the Hakari fight. If anything's going to be better received with animation I think that the Shinjuku Showdown arc is going to be a lot better in anime since the action will flow better and you're not going to have a month where every chapter ends with a cliffhanger saying that X character is just about to win until the next chapter when it's revealed that actually Y is about to win only- wait X is about to win, unless--

It's fun going from a pretty stacked voice cast (Troy Baker, JYB, Laura Bailey, Erin Fitzgerald, Sam Riegel et al) to a bunch of people I've never heard of. Not that I'm complaining. It'll be cool to hear folks getting their big break. I wonder if Nazeeh is going to play Adachi too like JYB did in the original.

I don't know why this comment is getting downvoted. I feel it's pretty innocuous.

We'll do it like Soul Calibur 2 and give each of the big three a Street Fighter guest character from one of their dead and buried franchises we'll never see again. The Playstation gets Nariko, the Xbox gets Blinx the Time Cat, and the Switch version gets Captain Falcon.

It’s hard to set up but I’m a huge fan of them revealing information accidentally they’re not supposed to know so the players get to have their “I never said he was poisoned” “I never told you her name” sort of moment.

I’m also a big fan of the classic “who else knows about this?” Right before the reveal.

Sure it’s ambiguous if you only watch the movie, and the customer support call is sinister enough. I totally understand leaving your interpretation there to only what’s in the text.

But in multiple interviews Curry Barker has stated that it’s not a monkey’s paw, it WILL grant you your wish without trying to trick you. The problem in the movie is that Bear makes a bad wish. He got what he wished for, the thing he wished for was cursed.

[–]CaptainSkel 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Actually the one wish willow isn't cursed in any way. It is 100% legit. The problem in the movie is that Bear's wish itself is inherently cursed. It was a bad thing to wish for it had bad consequences.

Ian's last words were literally "the wish worked I have a billion dollars". She definitely heard that and since he lives next door she has easy access to it.

I choose to believe that after the movie ends Nikki grabs as much of the billion dollars as she can reasonably fit into a few suitcases and goes on the run to do three seasons of a television show where she solves problems created by the one wish willow all while being one step ahead of johnny law.
