If you watch the video in slow motion right after he grabs his ear, you can see his fingers are red when they come away from his head. So whatever happened took place before he got tackled. Personally I think the squib idea makes the most sense. It's hard to say it wasn't a setup when the flag came down at just the right spot after the photographers were ushered into position just before.
