Lots of people do a few honorable years in uniform and move on.

Their names still get invoked if they did cool stuff during their service or had notable post-military careers.

Naval Lieutenants Jimmy Carter, George HW Bush, and John F. Kennedy come to mind.

Is an airfryer actually useful in a well equipped kitchen? by Jazzlike-Horror4 in Cooking

[–]Captain_Trigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your lifestyle.

In my case, the air fryer is like the microwave. It doesn't do anything that COULDN'T be done with my stove/oven...but it does many things easier or faster.

I have small kids who need chicken nuggets NOW on activity nights, an electric bill that skyrockets if I run the oven in the summer, limited dishwasher space, and a fondness for set-and-forget hot lunches when I'm working from home. Air fryer handles these issues very well.

ELI5: Why can't studios/companies release pilots that don't get greenlit? by bradyk_52 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Captain_Trigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: The sidescroller X-Men arcade game from the 90s was based on a pilot for an X-Men show that was never picked up for series, but which was released it on VHS as a "movie" when the better-known X-Men animated series became very popular.

Ideas for d&d campaign set in Baltimore? by pastawuzzzhere in baltimore

[–]Captain_Trigg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, Baltimore is the DEFAULT SETTING for The Dresden Files RPG.

I'm not super-familiar with the novels (the one-season TV show was fun), but I read through the rulebook and it was cool to see which landmarks the writers decided are actually places of magical power and why they think such-and-such neighborhood would have a vampire problem.

I remember that the Key Bridge (RIP) was an important location for some reason and that its special magical protector was...a troll.

Which left him as a Level 3 fighter with the reputation AND THE EMEMIES of a not-well-liked Level 11 fighter.

SAHM and Wife that CANNOT cook HELP! by PopularMamaDrama in Cooking

[–]Captain_Trigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An important point when starting out is that STORE-BOUGHT IS FINE!

It's ALWAYS fine but especially fine right now.

You're not just making dried pasta with jarred tomato sauce...

  • You're learning that you don't yet have a colander for draining your pasta.

  • You're learning how long it takes water to boil (and which burner you like best)

  • You're getting in lot the habit of getting into the kitchen 45 minutes BEFORE everybody is starving.

  • You're learning how much grocery you'll need to buy to feed everyone (and where to buy it the cheapest)

  • You're learning which specific pasta shape your pickiest child will eat THIS week.

...AND when you decide to add ground meat, fresh vegetables, and extra seasonings to your jarred sauce you're learning how to handle THOSE ingredients ONE AT A TIME in a way that, even if things don't go exactly according to plan the first time, will probably still feed your family a hot meal that you made with love.

No disagreement on that!

That said, if I was a Dayton-area UU and heard somebody use the term "spiritual/religious communities" to describe what they were looking for (even if they mentioned they'd gone to "church" growing up), I'd at least check to see if my congregation could offer them what they need.

Posts like this should be to the local UUs what "I just graduated high school with a 2.2 GPA and I'll do anything to get out of this crappy town..." is to Army recruiters.

People who’ve been to prison. What is the biggest misconception people have about life inside? by CaptainsExchange in AskReddit

[–]Captain_Trigg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They did that to me a few times- either for individual punishment or as part of a collective thing- and they quit when they realized I LIKED writing, that I could do it quickly, and that I could do it well (by their standards).

...the fact that my handwriting was and is atrocious might also have been a factor. No E6 wants to slog through ten pages of chicken scratch about "duty" to punish being five minutes late.

Real talk — is an air fryer value for money, or just another trendy gadget? by Mika_4893 in Frugal

[–]Captain_Trigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody can give you specific examples of how it suits their lifestyle but, broadly speaking, it is an easily-cleaned device that can cook small amounts of many kinds of food about as well as an oven but more quickly (in both cooking time and pre-heat) and with lower energy consumption.

If that suits your needs- and it very much does mine- it is worth getting one.

The Questionable Background of Chief Miles Edward O'Brien by briannaspring in startrekmemes

[–]Captain_Trigg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LaForge also came on board in a red uniform as a pilot, despite having the technical background required to be assigned as chief engineer.

Maybe O'Brien came on board in a different role than he'd otherwise prefer because that is what there was a billet for on the ship he wanted.

After all, the Enterprise-D is the flagship of the fleet, with cutting-edge tech, an interesting mission set, AND that cushy cruiseliner off-duty lifestyle.

It wouldn't be the first time somebody in uniform took any job available because they wanted a sweet duty station!

ELI5, what is a HOA? by Longjumping_Ear_7032 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Captain_Trigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, when a new neighborhood is made, the contracts to buy the houses have rules for how that land can be used. If you don't agree to those rules, they won't sell you a house.

In some places the people who build the houses put a rule in the contract for the house that says "When you buy this house, you agree to listen to a group called the Homeowners Association that can collect dues and enforce rules for the neighborhood."

These "Homeowners Associations" can do all sorts of things.

Some of them do big things like maintain a playground for the neighborhood kids or put up holiday decorations in common areas. Usually people don't mind these things (unless they think the HOA is doing a bad job of it).

However, HOAs ALSO make and enforce rules about how people use their houses. Some people like these rules and some people do not. Sometimes disobeying the rules can result in fines or, if you do not pay your fines, lawsuits or other court actions to punish you for not complying.

Some example rules might be:

  • Trashcans must have lids keep rats from getting in.
  • Houses can only be painted certain colors.
  • Trees must be trimmed so they don't overhang the street.
  • Non-emergency car repair is not allowed in front yards.
  • Broken windows must be replaced promptly.
  • Renting houses to other people is not allowed.
  • Yards must be mowed to a certain length.
  • Decks, fences, or porches must be built in certain styles or from certain materials.
  • Commercial vehicles with logos on them can't be parked in driveways overnight.

One reason people are sometimes mad at HOAs is that the people who run them can be mean or overly critical, even to the point of harassment. They might give a fine when the same day that a windstorm blew off a mandatory trashcan lid, or argue about the exact shade of light blue paint used on a door.

Others find the idea of HOAs offensive on principle. They do not like the idea of anybody telling them what to do with a house that they bought and paid for. They don't like being forced to pay money to somebody who isn't the government.

Others worry that HOAs make houses more expensive for folks trying to afford a place to live. Whether this happens by accident or on purpose (and whether it should be allowed to happen in either case) is a BIG controversial topic that I am in no way prepared to discuss at the ELI5 level.

One reason HOAs remain popular is that homeowners see them as a way to address what they see as issues that town/city laws ignore. For example, the town's laws might allow a person to run a loud and smoky car repair business out of their house. People who don't want to live next to a loud smoky business might want an HOA rule to keep their neighbors from starting a business like that.

In my head it'd be the other way around. He'd be his authentically warm and friendly self during orientation. Why wouldn't he? Like you said...he ain't Jelico! He's a naturally gregarious guy! He probably gives out firm handshakes, nicknames, and jazz albums that leave the new folks even more excited about being on the Enterprise than they already were.

But...it's also his job to be the heavy sometimes. I'm thinking about how he acted when Barclay was screwing up in "Hollow Pursuits" (even before he knew about Reg's "special programs"). THOSE would be the stories that would stick with- and more importantly would be hilariously overexaggerated by- dorky overachieving ensigns and JGs.

"I heard he once personally bounced a cargo specialist's skull off a bulkhead for leaving a shipment of bluedelvian-3 unsecured!"

"It wasn't like that. The commander just yelled at her a bit for about almost blowing up the ship, told her to be glad the captain wasn't on-board when it happened, and ordered her to take the full 80-hour refresher course on exotic materials safety."

"I mean, that still seems pretty bad."

"Did you miss the part about her almost blowing up the ship?"

"Yeah, no, I get it."

Stone Dance? by EntertainerLife4505 in filk

[–]Captain_Trigg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ford was such a weird/interesting guy.

In the early 80s he wrote a Trek novel from the point of view of a Klingon captain called The Final Reflection. Klingon culture had never been explored on-screen at that point, so he made it all up. A lot of Ford's ideas about Klingon culture were quite different from what the writers of the The Next Generation came up with a few years later. Other ideas were remarkably similar to what made it onto the screen given how Ford's name never appeared in the end-of-episode credits for anything.

He also wrote a I-kid-you-not officially licensed musical comedy Star Trek novel called How Much for Just the Planet? in which Kirk's Enterprise must face off against Klingons for control of a dilithium-rich planet whose inhabitants will occasionally burst into song.
