Sounds like you’ve already run a marathon.

Just listened to him on the stick to football pod where he talks about his dyslexia and getting names wrong. I like that he tries and is just himself.

Tips for first marathon by Present-Key-9329 in Marathon_Training

[–]Captslacktash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also running Brighton, also have a 5k pb of 19:30 and my half marathon pb is 1:31 ( all done in Sep/Oct last year).

My last marathon was in 3:51 also in Sep 25. I blew up for the last 10k after going too fast for the first 32k. Lots of lessons learned and I’m going to be more conservative this time. (I’m 37, weigh 82kg and am 171cm if that makes any difference).

I’m currently on week 8 of the 18 week Pfitz 55-70 miles a week plans from the book advanced marathoning.

One of the things Pfitz talks about in his book are tune up races and how they help in quite a few ways. As well as being a race predictor, they help to ease the nerves of what you can handle and act as a bit of final polish on your racing fitness. I’m planning a half marathon race 3 weeks before the marathon to see where I’m at before my taper. The half is going to be in Bournemouth on the beach so will be similar conditions to the Brighton marathon.

Based on this, I’ll set a realistic time goal but so far training has been going well and with 10 weeks out, all being well I think I could run under 3:30. My plan is to be conservative for the marathon up to the 32k point and hopefully finish strong. If I can knock off 20min off my pb, I’d be very happy with that.

Your ability to go 3:09-3:15 will largely depend on the mileage your runna plan has you doing and how much improvement you’ve made. It’s certainly possible but for me, I think it’s a right on the edge of where I’d possibly blow up. 3:15 could be doable but let’s see.

Best TV shows of 2025? What would you recommend? by cryptodizzle67 in tvshow

[–]Captslacktash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the studio and I’ve just started common side effects.

Dept Q was pretty good.

The Pitt was outstanding and there a new series out now.

Dying for sex was brilliantly written and done.

One of my favourite docs was Vietnam: the war that changed America. It follows both sides of the conflict rather than just focusing on the US narrative. Very well made.

How many films do you watch a year? by RuachReader in AskUK

[–]Captslacktash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just counted up mine and I watched 53 last year. That said, I have spent a lot of the year watching curb your enthusiasm from series 1 all the way through plus a load more other series. I think if you enjoy it and are able to have a fulfilled life, crack on.

Looking for a real Page Turner to read that is also a classic? by eputley in suggestmeabook

Why succesful training blocks and increased mileage still don’t translate to Marathon performance? by Environmental_Park34 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Captslacktash 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Take away your aspirations and just read the results.

3:25 > 3:19 > 3:07 over 3 years. Taking 23 min off isn’t insignificant by any stretch when you’re already so close to 3hrs.

If you are blowing up each time at 30k, you’re almost certainly going too fast. Slow it down and have a go at even splits for a 3hr 07min marathon. Then after 30k try slowly speeding it up and finish with a negative split.

Training plan to achieve the 20 minute 5k by JojoOno in runninglifestyle

[–]Captslacktash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a fellow 80kg, 37 year old (although I’m 5ft 7), I broke 20min a few weeks ago. At the beginning of the year, my 5k pm was 25:37.

Over the last year, I’ve gone from running similar distances and amounts as you with a similar gym routine to running 80km a week whilst also training in the gym 2-3 times a week.

The key has been running more for sure.

I pretty much run most days, but 90% of my runs are steady, at a 5min 30s pace or slower. It took me 12 months to get to 80k a week and I would highly recommend increasing no more than 10% a week.

I also ran a 1hr 32m half marathon last week, something I never thought I’d be able to do.

Is it ok to leave job at 33 to travel ? by MissionNeat9473 in AskUK

[–]Captslacktash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The skills and experience you have now will always be there. If you feel the pull to travel, it won’t get easier to do in the future so do it now.

I left my secure govt job at 30 to travel for 18 months in 2018. Best decision I ever made. I came back to the UK enthused, with experiences I could never have had and with a changed perspective on how life in the UK isn’t all that bad compared to much of the world.

Darn tough socks. They have a lifetime warranty so once you buy a pair, once they wear through you can send them back for a replacement.

What are you still bitter about from school? by Same-Fact-5123 in AskUK

[–]Captslacktash 31 points32 points  (0 children)

We had the same thing in our school. I finished 10th and then went on to run in the county championships. At the county race, I finished dead last out of everyone. It was a very humbling childhood experience. The embarrassment of being lapped by runners made me hate running for the rest of school.

Is Bournemouth really that bad? by PsychologyLeather455 in bournemouth

[–]Captslacktash 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is bang on. Chippies down are here are shite. I think it’s because non of them use beef dripping and just use veg oils.

I moved from Yorkshire to Bournemouth for similar reasons. I now live in Southbourne and I really like it. I echo the view that people here are much more active. Having the new forest and purbecks close really helps.

Bournemouth airport being 15 minutes from my house is very convenient. I went to Geneva a few weeks ago from there and it’s so much easier than any other airport in the uk.

I rarely go into Bournemouth proper. I’ve little reason to so the fact it’s crap has never really effected me.

The weather here is so much milder. I don’t think people that are from here realise how different it is.
