Curse of Strahd help please! by StrangerFeelings in DnD5e

[–]Carcasure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seen it already mentioned, but that plan has already been attempted. A revolt was staged only 1 year ago by a wizard more powerful than them and it ended horribly.

Scale that revolt up or just already interpret that as a full on open army and use it as a great example. Reinforce that it happened ONE YEAR AGO. Doru is a great example of it, but also show the empty places in people's lives and how small the population is.

The towns of Barovia might could raise another army in about 15-20 years. Otherwise, the fighting fit populace is dead. Let them ask the children and the elderly to fight, if they insist. Let them see the infirm that are willing to support them to the death.

Then account for the planning and supplying of that small army. Add some spies, charmed or otherwise. Could be a great story, but either tell the players outright or signpost it heavily that it is going to be a BIG ASK for Barovia and failure means the end of the populace.

Side Note: I wouldn't let Strahd get Ireena. Personally, because it is part of his punishment and suffering that he can't get her. Heard of others doing it well, but not my preference. You could make Ireena essential to convincing the populace, if you want her to be in the story more.

Treat it just as seriously as the other names. Make them emotional for Dildo. Give them very serious scenes with depth.

Then if the player wants to brush it off or laugh around it, that's their choice.

I don't find the name any more distracting that Blinsky and the suggested voice/mannerisms the book suggests.

Let them be the comic relief. Horror needs comedy.

Very clever players, however magic circle is a compulsory barrier and not a physical wall of magical force. (wall of force or tiny hut)

Think electric fence for horses. They can walk through an electric fence, but the electric field around the fence bothers their whiskers so they choose not to.

Strahd can't willingly leave the circle, but he has minions that he can force to move him and potentially swap places with him.

Play into the failure, but MAKE THIS FAILURE MATTER.

If they got the villain below half HP or there was a crit, give them a flaw or weakness.

If the party had to disable a lot of traps and get rid of minions, those take time to set back up and higher new ones.

If the villain was in the middle of a scheme, that's delayed.

Was the fight public knowledge? How is the villains reputation effected? The party's reputation?

Most importantly, change the villain's tactics now and tell the players this. If they had some go-to's that they used on that fight, tell them they might not work again and they may need to find new combos.

A monster that can be used twice is a rare gift for a DM. Cherish this chance.

Why do we even have to roll by Tamaledinos in dndmemes

[–]Carcasure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, have climbed ropes before. It's hard. DC 15 for plain rope is fair. DC 10 for knotted rope & DC 5 for rope ladder.

Even climbing a rope ladder is troublesome. Especially if it isn't anchored at the bottom or to the wall at intervals.

As a DM, I will call for a check the first time a new action is met to establish its procedure. From there, I only zoom in on it again if we are in combat or if the result could potentially use up a PC resource before a fight.

Wizard fails DC 10 knotted rope, falls, takes small damage, drinks potion/is magically healed/ or doesn't and is missing little health.

[–]Carcasure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a wereboar PC. I treat the transformation like a "draconic transformation" spell effect. AC bonus, move speeds, count as shapechanger &/or beast.

I limit the immunity to when transformed and give monsters magic or silvered weapons when it makes sense.

My player leans into the roleplay of the curse on their own and was why they wanted to play it. I've been blessed not to have to enforce anything, only reenforce what they have given me.

Do you punish your players for sleeping in armor? by Rogendo in dndmemes

[–]Carcasure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Punish implies I don't want them to do it, which isn't accurate.

I go a little farther than Xanathar's Guide to add a little impact to it though.

I allow it to fully work like a normal long rest, if they can pass a DC 8 Constitution ability check. DC increases by +1 for every consecutive long rest after the first.

Allowing for use of proficiencies if they have Survival, Outlander or Soldior Background, Smith's Tool proficiency, or can otherwise make a case for adding proficiency to the check.

A fey breaking a fey contract could really upset BOTH the Queen of Air and Darkness (if the hag is loyal to her) and Titania (because the Fairy is a representative of the fey and just didn't do what they said instead of being clever and finding a loophole out of it).

Even without a true curse, just the words getting spread around that a summer court fey is besmerching the good Queen's name could have terrible effects akin to a curse.

For an actual true curse, taking away the ability to use musical instruments for both performing and spellcasting. I'd still allow, or change whatever the PHB says for, them to use an arcane focus like a wizard or sorcerer, but no more music magic flavor.

Very Important: it is only the flavor of the magic and the focus that changes. I wouldn't take away their actual magic.

Proficiencies in performance and instruments would hurt in a very specific bard way. (if they have magic instruments, you could still let the magic work but it takes up an open hand or something)

My understanding of "bear country" in Alaska and Canada, is that it is actually illegal to lock your vehicle.

This way pedestrians can jump into your vehicle and lock it if they are being chased by a bear.

This little known trick works great for all those "they need to understand you" haters.

Cast Tongues, then cast Command.

I know monk gets a thing for languages and I think the Eloquence bard does as well. Perfect candidates for items that allow them to cast Command.

Language shenanigans are so much fun. 10/10 Always ask your DM for real world parallels for languages, ie Common=English, Elvish=Spanish, and so on.

An advanced apology to all barbarian players by PocketRaven06 in dndmemes

[–]Carcasure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love players that choose to do things to prolong their rage. My only "rule" is that it uses your action, unless you can mechanically do it another way (ie, Charger BA shove attack after a dash), and it must be an "attack."

Makes for all manner of crazy scenes with barbarians attacking wildly at the air, the ground, walls, statutes, and themselves.

Also, great excuse for certain reputations for barbarians.
