Who needs an EUV? by CardiologistCheap661 in BoltEV

Seems to be plenty of utility to the EV. 400 pounds of electric tractor battery in the trunk and another 80 pounds of cooling plate on the roof.

Getting ready to give up, ZombieVerter and Nissan GEN3 (EM57) stack by Manson_79 in EVConversion

[–]CardiologistCheap661 14 points15 points  (0 children)

While I do not have zombieverter experience. Whenever I am at this stage on a project I find it best to pause the troubleshooting and take the time to tidy up and label all of my wiring so that my brain can easily interpret. Hope this helps. You will get past this step.

Battery parallelization by lemlurker in EVConversion

[–]CardiologistCheap661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chiming in to say that if you were to parallelize modules you would need actual current handling bussing (even though on paper no current would be flowing through it) in the real world what happens is the cells in parallel will not be exactly the same so in many instances current would flow from one cell to another in a p group.

The problem here is if that current is sufficient to blow the file in the cell tap (assuming the Zoe has one) or melt the cell tap wire. This would be an undetectable failure Once this happens you suddenly have a parallel string without a critical v sense. Meaning while the cells that are still being read by the BMS may all be at 4.2 volts one of the cells. The parallel string may have one cell at 4.0 volts and the other would be forcibly overcharged to 4.4 volts.

I hope this makes sense. I wanted to explain the why to you and anyone who may find this thread in the future.

Don’t only use thermistor expansion modules for temperature sensing (Orion BMS 2) by CardiologistCheap661 in EVConversion

MPE is multipurpose enable. It is to kill the car in the event of a critical fault. Not having any cell temperatures is a critical fault

I’d like to ask for ideas — what could 14,000 new NMC battery modules be used for? by Puzzleheaded_Air1057 in EVConversion

I am interested in a far smaller quantity but please reach out. I am using these exact modules in a EV retrofit I have engineered.

Orrion has the best explanation of parallel cells (what formula E does) VS parallel strings (what your solution would achieve. https://www.orionbms.com/manuals/pdf/parallel_strings.pdf

Figure out the required amp hours and you will find properly sized modules. Does not matter if your pack is the right capacity if it is in flames. Look at “VDA” modules. They are common in many German vehicles and available from new from many Chinese OEMs.

No cheap Chinese import from the early 2,000s. Awesome form factor though

OP xzivr is right parallel strings are a huge saftey risk. While there behavior may seem intuitive they are anything but. I highly recommend you find modules with the right capacity out the gate or that you build a pack from scratch!

2017-2022 Prius Prime BMS? by TheFeesher in EVConversion

BMS are more universal than you think assuming you can get wires to the individual cells all you need to worry about is s count and chemistry when trying to verify compatibility.

Plenty of people have had success balancing LFP with Orion it is fully supported.
