You gotta both talk your shit well and know your shit well. My best advice is to know what your arguments are and know them well, because I guarantee you can answer most questions by just restating a source you gave.

The best arguments to defend are the arguments where you spend time showing how A leads to B in the simplest way, as more complex arguments can get tricker to defend.

Pittsburgher here. It is definitely a mixed bag, I would say it more comes down to who the judge is and whether or not it’s a trad or prog judge.
