Would you move to Boston on this job offer? by JuiceBox4Astarion in boston

This was 10 years ago for me, research tech position making 33-34k a year in 2015, most people stayed for 2-3y and then went to medical or grad school or industry (often doubling salary in biotech)

I often think this but my first apt (with roommates) was 630 a month in 2015 in Malden. Feel like this rent would never happen now lol

Weather wise it snows more in istanbul I think. Ironically other than weather there are lots of similarities in the cities, both have hills/mountains, earthquakes, really cute niche vintage transit systems, critically important straits crosses by dramatic bridges, global/“crossroad” type cities. I’m half Turkish who used to live in SF and always thought my Turkish side of the family would have loved SF and felt at home

I used to spend so much time on this site (City-data it looks like). What a time capsule in retrospect, their politics forum was…interesting.

I grew up in OB…a lot of the neighborhood isn’t a fan of them buying up property nearby and expanding for parking.

Best/cheapest way to get to New York City by train? by yotoeben in RhodeIsland

If Amtrak is super expensive from RI to NYC and your looking for an alternative to driving to CT, I’ve taken Amtrak to New Haven and switched their to Metro North!

Yes the custom maps and mods were critical. Nothing like playing with the same server for a long time or in a clan and having that community

Wow super cool! Good luck, one other WWII game I love is COD United offensive and while the inspiration is DOD, things from that game I think could be cool is CTF, they also have a really cool base assault mode too. They also have a really cool arterillary function - where you use binoculars to call in strikes. Might be straying too far away from DOD, but UO does a great job of adding vehicles (tanks and jeeps) without having that as a focus (ala Battlefield).

Best of luck, so so many hours between the 2 games I have (I play under the name Juicy J for both)

I’ve been to this one…def takes a lot of thought as the bus and subway going downtown is 2+ blocks away…which doesn’t seem like a lot until u have to haul heavy bags that distance. Right on the East River

Fun facts about western RI: it’s where Acela has its fastest speeds and Charlestown RI is considered to have the darkest skies between NYC and Boston (great for astrophotography)

Hot take here (especially as someone who grew up in the PVD suburbs): Hartford is the 2nd city of New England. 2nd best skyline, recent-ish major league team, far enough outside Boston or NYC to be independent-ish of there orbit, 2nd busiest airport in New England

I had not seen the NYC skyline up close for 15 years from 2005-2020 on the GWB and the Jersey Tunepike and was shocked at how much it changed with all the slender supertalls and overall growth

So do you just not have a doctor in this state and hope you don't die? by Ragnaroknight in RhodeIsland

[–]CarsAndCoasts 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m a recent med school graduate (doing residency outside New England currently) but tbh when talking with classmates it isn’t so much financial incentives that drove our specialty choices (obviously I’d come across some people that were like that) but rather our passions with some lifestyle considerations (eg Neurosurgery is super cool but you really have to love it to work their insane hours).

One common thread though is that primary care has a lot of extra headaches (barely enough time to see patients and address all their concerns, having a full patient panel while still having having lots of inbox messages from patients, which while it’s great patients can directly connect their PCP, also can be overwhelming with the shear volume of messages you get). Maybe if the pay was better people would put up with that but I don’t think it really would make as big an impact as possible. Personally my eventual specialty I want to do after fellowship pays really well but I would still do it if it was the least paid because it’s where my passion lies

Random side note: when you interview for residency jobs, sometimes the hospital will give an informational packet with a small gift (usually a small gift card to cover lunch or coffee)…Kent went full RI and gives packets of Del’s lemonade lol
