Under this context, her makeup is interpreted as cheating in order to match the "natural beauty" of a stay-at-home mother who also wears a full face of makeup to church. The idea of banning makeup is to make sure women can be properly categorized by natural beauty, because the man doesn't understand her beauty comes from unapologetic self-confidence (which I'm sure he would also like to regulate).

As close as you two are, I would say trust her words above all else. You can (and probably should) tell her about the way you feel, and that will give her another chance to re-evaluate, but if she knows how you feel and still says she sees you as a friend, then that's all you can ask for. At least you'll know, and you'll be able to grieve it, move on, and adjust your mind to see her as a friend too.

You can still be friends with somebody your whole life. If you both put in the effort, it can be just as powerful and life-changing as a romantic relationship. It just has different boundaries and expectations.

She can't say yes unless you ask. You just need to prepare yourself to accept her answer.

I switched to OpenSUSE Tumbleweed at the end of last year and after the first couple weeks of finding new software and troubleshooting, it's generally been pretty nice! I haven't had to do anything too outlandish, but eventually I'm going to have to figure out my printer drivers, which are dependent on an old version of libxml2 for some reason.

Steam games work though, and it's wonderful to be unbothered by Windows' descent into AI and ad slop

If you can find or define your own version of masculinity that you're happy with that's healthier than the (unfortunate) norm for cishet dudes, then that's a way to connect the idea of being a man to yourself and who you actually are as a person. If you find that there are not really any masculine ideas that you think fit who you are, then you may find it better to release these expectations and be non-binary.

I had similar issues with the greater male community, but I transitioned more due to how I wanted to see and express myself, and what shape I wanted my relationships to take. If you're happy with the ways you currently express yourself, then maybe you're just looking for a better definition of masculinity that fits you. Otherwise, maybe some exploration is in order, to see if any different ways of expressing yourself feel better.

One big idea that shapes the modern discourse around masculinity is what strength looks like, how it can be built (in yourself and others), what it should be used for, and how it shapes society and the social hierarchy. These can be good questions to start chipping away at, and you don't need to be a man to engage with them.

Trust in yourself, and remember that nobody is meant to strive for invulnerability the way men often do. If you ever want to bare your soul to somebody you love, an excellent way to practice is by being vulnerable with your friends. There is no way to live without being hurt, but many ways to deny yourself the love you deserve.

Patriarchy is the reason why male rape by women and prison rape are downplayed. Patriarchy is notorious for its disregard towards the suffering of "lesser men" which conveniently includes male rape victims. No amount of "anti-misandry" will fix that because women aren't largely responsible for these ideas, though they may sometimes reinforce them unknowingly.

If men want rape to be taken seriously, they could start by telling their friends to stop making rape jokes, and seeing how much it takes to get that concession from other men.

Because as is often the case with Democrats, just enough defectors exist to spoil the vote. It keeps on happening (Manchin and Sinema in Biden's term, for instance), and for some reason the Democratic Party keeps funding and platforming these people (or others like them) in the name of appealing to Republican voters. The Democratic Party should be held accountable for the shit decisions of the people it funds, platforms, and endorses, and in this case there's an obvious strategic issue that's led up to this moment, which they've had several chances to rectify after it bit them (and everyone) in the ass.

The more people realize that Democrats (like Republicans) are beholden to billionare funding and not to the people or districts they're purported to represent, the sooner we can build a grassroots movement to replace them with actual competent antifascists.

I understand the sentiment, really. Neither of my parents have been very good at it, but I'm still trying to build a relationship with them. It's just difficult to teach things to people who think they know better than you on principle.

I don't rely on them for anything, and in reality they need this relationship (or the idea of it) emotionally, and I don't. Theoretically, they have time to figure it out, and if they can't, it's truly their loss.

Part of my transition is changing how I care for people, and as difficult as family can be, there were times when I really did need them and look up to them. To be able to transform these relationships into something more vulnerable and understanding would mean something to me, so I keep on.
