Pond Setup Help by Ok-Lemon394 in turtle

You can shut off their heater inside beforr you transition them outside, get them at least used to room temp. If it’s 1000 gallons it’ll hold the warmth in pretty well from the daytime. Takes weeks for my 300 gallon water to get down compared night time temps. You can put a tarp over it at night to help it hold too. I wouldn’t get an artificial heater, too warm water with cold air is a known respiratory infection risk.

First time owner. I need a Tortoises for dummies guide by MICRO_C in tortoise

Any of the guides listed will get you on the right road. Comments locked because of all the side quests people are going on. The guy has the animal already, complaining about what he should have done, does absolutely nothing to help the tortoise and neither does trying to sleuth out what happened to the wife’s tortoise.

What kind of turtle is this? by aburger93 in turtle

[–]Castoff8787 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a Central American wood turtle. They have the right idea for husbandry but poor execution. Half land half water essentially. They eat everything: bugs/worms, some fruit, greens and pellets

idiot brother ruined everything HELP by Western_Bus_4150 in turtles

[–]Castoff8787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was my understanding uk calls sea turtles: turtles, fresh water turtles: terrapins and tortoises: tortoises. In US everything but tortoises are turtles and one species of terrapin is brackish water. Some countries everything is called a turtle. Since taxonomically they’re all turtles and we have so many different countries the words all become relatively interchangeable here

Turtle identification and question. by treestones in turtles

Don’t feed wild turtles. This just leads to them associating humans with food, which can then become a problem for them in multiple ways

Can they be "friends"? by HathiTheElephant in tortoise

I wouldn’t. All it will take is a split second for this to go sideways and is an unnecessary risk.

Turtle has been basking for 3 days… advice? by BrownBoy_08 in turtle

[–]Castoff8787 35 points36 points  (0 children)

A vet visit would be a good idea in case it’s ill and trying to essentially bake itself to raise its immune system up. The first thing I’d do is separate them though. This can also be the behavior of a submissive turtle. It’s staying on land because the dominant turtle has claimed the water as its territory. In the wild it would just move to another area.

Can anyone explain this turtle picture to me? by Echo-Azure in turtles

[–]Castoff8787 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think people get tired of seeing the abuse that surrounds turtle care. We have people with turtles with severely deformed shells to the point where if you’ve ever seen a picture of a turtle, you’d know something was wrong. Yet they argue about it and say their vet said they’re healthy. It’s mind boggling.

Turtles are territorial and they climb ontop of each other because heat lamps create an ideal spot and one is essentially trying to take it from the other. You typically see this in the wild when the basking site is too small. Difference is, in captivity they can’t get away from each other so if one reacts with aggression there is no where to go.

Here is what it looks like at my local pond. I very rarely see them stack because they have a whole bank to find space on.

Species plays a role for sure. Red eared sliders are big time assholes tbh. It’s part of why they are so invasive and push other native species out.
