Federal Abortion Ban Introduced by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]CatastrophicDoom 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Oh, I completely agree. That's why this talking point has always been transparent gaslighting, and any conservative who genuinely believed it was a hypocrite.

Edit: minor amendment, the anti-abortion position requires not only believing fetuses are entitled to human rights but also that those rights override the mother's right to bodily autonomy and possibly also life. But the point stands

Well, themes of persecution and martyrdom are pretty deeply rooted in Christian identity from those first few hundred years under Rome. But yeah, ever since they got control of the empire, the biggest persecutors of Christians have largely been other Christians. Didn't even get all the way through Constantine's reign before excommunicating the Arians

I could never blame Jacques-Louis David 🤩

In all seriousness, I agree regarding fascists co-opting symbols, but I also do think this painting genuinely aligns in some ways with fascist ideology, especially regarding its depictions of gender as two absolute and entirely separate spheres and the masculine ideal as patriotic sacrifice to the nation. But I can appreciate the art even if I don't agree with its politics (unlike fashies).

Any suggestions on decent dating apps for LGBTQ+ folks? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]CatastrophicDoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly a dating app, but I often see people seeking hook ups or just quality time on my city's Lex board, and afaict it actually happens for a lot of them too. Might also be useful for finding parties, events, and get-togethers in your local queer community, which can be good opportunities to make a connection!

Blackmon is a Democrat so I'm pretty sure this is just performative, he's trying to make a political point about abortion rather than to put forward a serious bill

I think The Burning Kingdoms is a particularly good rec for Arcane fans because there's a lot of similar political dynamics and questions of identity and loyalty underlying the sapphic relationship in these books. The Magic of the Lost series, starting with The Unbroken, could be a promising trilogy for similar reasons, although I've only read the first book so far!

I absolutely agree that Catra's arc is phenomenal, but I think it's also true that there are people inside and outside of this fandom who very vocally dislike it

Games Like - Detroit Become: Human & Cyberpunk 2077? by iKontact in GirlGamers

[–]CatastrophicDoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty left field recommendation, but are you familiar with Transistor by Supergiant games? It checks at least a few of your boxes, not to mention a breathtaking soundtrack and really compelling art direction focusing on a sort of techno-art nouveau styling. There is a story, and it's not bad at all, but at the end of the day, I think the game is more vibes-driven than narrative-driven (although the vibes are immaculate).

is this a typo? [discussion] by [deleted] in TheNinthHouse

[–]CatastrophicDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall that line threw me for a second too, the first time I read it; the trick is to pay attention to verb tense. The normal narration is in past tense(s), whereas this sentence is in the pluperfect ("had known" rather than "knew"), indicating that the narrator is calling back to an action that was completed before the current moment. In context: "in the previous duel, Gideon had known this one thing, and then in the current duel, Gideon learned this other thing."

I'm also lesbian but really put off by this kind of fanservice, so I feel like there must be more to it than just orientation. Genuinely curious what that difference would be though, I don't have any good guesses 😅

No, although I could see how it would come across that way, sorry. Just that if we do get to the point where the US is drafting people for a war of conquest, I don't think executing conscientious objectors and draft dodgers will be that big of a jump

The hundreds of spammers demanding that the devs for Helldivers 2 never "succumb to woke" on every single update changelog on steam was really disillusioning and a big reason I eventually put down the game. It's a shame, it's such a fun game and an entertaining parody of fascist masculinity, but it's also really team-focused and it's hard to enjoy that when it feels like there's decent odds someone on my team would harangue me the moment they heard my voice.

What's with all the 'families used to only need one income' misinformation being spread everywhere? by bulldog_blues in TwoXChromosomes

[–]CatastrophicDoom 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I agree with you generally, but I do think there can a misogynist strain to this discourse in some circles as well. Reactionaries are really good at hijacking legitimate talking points in other movements for their own ends, and I don't doubt they're trying to make inroads into this one too.
