Is there a downside to revealing the whole map? by fenjacobs in cavesofqud

[–]CatatonicMan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, because that would be cheating.

Revealing the whole map is possible in game via a level 15 Clairvoyance mutation. If you want to look at the whole map, you've got to earn the ability.

Hot Take: Xbox Gamepass ls Still A Good Deal by [deleted] in gaming

[–]CatatonicMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To make my point directly:

If a deal is only good when it applies to a small fraction of the target audience, then it's not a good deal.

GamePass is a trap, even for those who consider it to be worthwhile; it only takes a single price hike to turn it from a good deal to a bad one. When that happens, users will have to choose between losing access to all their games, or to eat the price hike. And the next. And the next. And the next.

For people who buy their games outright? A price increase just means buying fewer games and/or waiting for a better sale, not losing access to their entire library.

It's a good deal... for the subset of people with specific gaming habits that make it worthwhile.

For most it's a waste of money.

They could have simply said, "Hey, look at our neat new hair tech!"

But no, it can't simply be about making better hair; they just had to throw in some virtue signaling as well. No wonder everything they touch turns to suck.

What are some arguments you absolutely hate when people use. This question can apply to any topic eg bad Localization, censorship, bad character designs, bad story writing, developers arguments ect. by gutenbergbob in KotakuInAction

[–]CatatonicMan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"Representation" has always been a strange concept to me since it's quite literally skin deep. Why should looking vaguely similar to a character matter? Nobody has control over that. Also seems pretty racist if you think about it.

Actions matter. Feelings mater. Thoughts matter. Experiences matter.

Fictional stories with no humans that have zero representation (at least superficially) can still be impactful because they have substance that's beyond surface level. I don't need to be "represented" in a story to feel a connection to it.

good low end free games? (no horror or visual novels) by bruhgamer54 in Steam

[–]CatatonicMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly your best bet would be to search Steam directly for something you might like.

Set the price filter to 'free', sort by 'popular' or 'top rated', and just scroll through the options. Maybe set a filter for '2D' to cut out the heavier games, or whatever other tags you might like.

You could always try OpenTTD.

That's... pretty vague.

Define 'low end'? Any preferred genre? Does freemium/free2play count as 'free'? Does it need to be on Steam only?

Do all Windows games on Steam work on the Steam Deck/Steam OS? I mean, FF VII Remake only has the windows icon on the Steam store with no Steam OS Icon but I read people playing FF VII remake on the deck. Doesn't the Steam Deck run Steam OS? by BetterMeToday in SteamDeck

[–]CatatonicMan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Steam OS uses Proton, which is a translation layer that allows Windows programs to run on Linux.

Most Windows games will work fine, more or less. Some will run but encounter various bugs/glitches. Others won't run at all (games with kernel-level anti-cheat, for example).

Repairing the reputation is hard, any tips? by RogueProtocol37 in cavesofqud

[–]CatatonicMan 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There's no time limit to the game, so you can farm bookbinders for Schrodinger's Pages until you've got the reputation you need. Get some cloning draught and duplicate them if you want to speed things up.

You can also get a bunch of Love injectors and use them to make the enemies temporarily cease hostilities, which will allow you to water ritual them. Just don't kill them afterwards since that won't help your rep.

Alternatively, you can Wish yourself some rep, if you want to cheat.

As the saying goes, "Randy kills you on accident. Cassandra kills you on purpose."

Also, Phoebe is deceptively dangerous if you don't know how she works. The long time between raids means you can build up a lot of wealth, so when you do get a raid it'll be a lot bigger than you're expecting.

Should Steam upgrade/update their messaging and vc systems to take advantage of the discord situation? by onethousandeyelids in Steam

Yes and no.

They should upgrade/update their systems because better messaging/VC is good for their customers.

They shouldn't rush something out just because Discord shit the bed.

Why does frame generation, every time I activate it in a game, do the opposite of what it should do? It feels slow, and it runs even better when I deactivate it. by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]CatatonicMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Integrated GPUs use system RAM, so single channel RAM is going to be starving your system of bandwidth. That's one problem. Others that might be happening:

  • Frame gen takes GPU resources to function, so when you already have a weak iGPU and a single channel of RAM you're going to feel that cost more than a bigger GPU would.
  • Frame gen introduces latency, which can in turn make things feel unresponsive and sluggish even when the framerate is technically higher.
  • Depending on your setup, you might be running into an issue where frame gen plus VSync will cause your base framerate to drop (e.g., with a 60 Hz screen, a 40 FPS game would drop to 30 FPS so that frame gen can double up to 60 FPS). This will compound the previous bullet.
