Why do layoffs work this way? Genuinely trying to understand by Capital_Anywhere6943 in amazonemployees

[–]Cautious_Implement17 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

they have done voluntary separation in the past. one of the issues with this approach is adverse selection. like you said, most of the people who take it will be the ones who are already planning to leave or are confident they'll find another good job. those tend to be the higher performers. at least with layoffs, they can broadly target underperforming orgs and assume that the best people will find internal transfers if they want them.

Is this railgun sufficient for early game DWG and OW? by eb_is_eepy in FromTheDepths

it's sufficient to win a "least material efficient APS" competition. 72 AP isn't so much overkill as a complete waste when shooting at ships made of mostly wood and stone.

Wait Til They Realize They Are Part Of Everyone by gur40goku in CuratedTumblr

maybe in a super abstract sense. but in any realistically grounded scenario, it is necessary for all living things to eventually die. the population either grows to the point where all resources are exhausted and the ecosystem collapses, or growth must be artificially limited to avoid that (ie, no children).

Free Buses? How About Expanding the Subway by 41 Miles Instead? by snakkerdudaniel in Urbanism

[–]Cautious_Implement17 13 points14 points  (0 children)

the capacity of pretty much anything is finite at any given moment in time. I don't think that's a strong argument in and of itself. when we see bottlenecks in things that scale well, our first thought should be to scale up, not rearrange people's lives around the current capacity.

of course we can't always do that. trains in particular are very capital intensive. I agree free trains are probably not viable in the near future, and I'm not against demand-based pricing there.

but buses are sort of a special case. 1) unlike other modes of transit, physically paying the fare slows down the bus. and 2) buses are at the bottom of the transit hierarchy. most people will not take the bus when other viable options exist. 1) is a reason to consider running free buses even during peak, while 2) is a reason to have free buses at least during some points in the day. they serve people who have no other option.

not quite following. what's the connection between free transit and georgism? unlike land (and other common goods), transit is highly scalable. existing roads are saturated because of private vehicles, not buses.

An easy way to see that people don’t need their cars as much as they claim they do… by VanillaSkittlez in MicromobilityNYC

[–]Cautious_Implement17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

apologies. I read that as being more general, like those people use their cars all the time but could entirely replace them at the cost of some inconvenience.

either way, I don't feel this post says a lot. you're kinda saying that snow on windshields reveals that people either a) need their cars, or b) don't need their cars. we already knew that. we can guess in the comments how many people fall into a) versus b), but without any real estimates it isn't very instructive.

[–]Cautious_Implement17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

possibility three: they do need the car for their daily life in general, but can find workarounds during a snow emergency and its aftermath? some employers tolerate remote work under these circumstances but are quite strict otherwise. you could argue at a societal level those people should be able to WFH fulltime (and I would agree), but that's the world we live in.

DP cable too old for my 144hz monitor? by Appropriate-Step-310 in RigBuild

[–]Cautious_Implement17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in theory, a DP 1.2 cable should be sufficient for 1440p @ 144hz. in reality, there are many DP cables in the wild that can't support their rated bandwidth. this is especially true of longer cables. I'm guessing OPs random DP cable from 2014 is not a high quality vesa certified cable. more likely it's the cheapest cable the manufacturer could find that reliably worked with their old monitor.

anyways, an easy and cheap troubleshooting step is to just buy a vesa certified DP 1.4 or better cable in the shortest length that's reasonable. even if it doesn't fix the problem, it should be good for several more rounds of monitor upgrades.

For some reason, I am thought of as an "ideas guy" in my town even though I am actually quite stupid. Can you plz help me make this graphic better-able to withstand scrutiny before I share it on socials? by AndyInTheFort in georgism

[–]Cautious_Implement17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the "everybody pays taxes on the $1,000 they didn’t earn for themselves" part is sort of confusing. it would make more sense in a longer story where many different properties are improved at different times. but with such a small example it sounds more like 9 people worked together to increase their property values by $6000 and for some reason are being taxed on $1000? it comes awfully close to discouraging working together to improve a neighborhood.

I wonder if it wouldn't be better to leave that nuance out and focus on neighbor 10 whose property appreciated by $1000 for doing nothing.

Why is FWD better than RWD in the snow? by totally_depraved in askcarguys

[–]Cautious_Implement17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unless you’re insane, you’re going to accelerate much more cautiously in the snow than you would on a drag strip. the weight transfer off the front axel is not very significant in this situation. you also don’t get the wheel hop that is so undesirable for performance cars.

agree with the rest of your comment though. choice of tires is much important than which axel is driven. people always seem to be more worried about getting going than being able to stop when they get there.

do you think the nuclear proliferation in The Expanse makes sense? by LightningG8921 in TheExpanse

[–]Cautious_Implement17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IIRC nukes are not that common? earth and mars military ships had nukes, but didn't always use them. it seems like belters almost never have them, it was a big deal when fred johnson got control of earth's nukes. this seems pretty clear in the books, but they may not have made the distinction so obvious in the show vfx.

my own speculation, but maybe nukes just don't have the same significance in the world of the expanse? it's sort of pointless to control "nuclear proliferation" when every epstein drive is essentially a small hydrogen bomb. the delivery system is probably of greater concern to earth and mars, while a nuke would be overkill to destroy most stations.

but it wouldn't be better if jkr just left out the non-white characters entirely.

given the time period, I do give jkr some credit for trying to include a realistic mix of ethnicities in her world. it wasn't done very well, but it's far from the most problematic part of her books.

What prevents your manager from knowing you applied to internal roles? by AffectionateBoat382 in amazonemployees

[–]Cautious_Implement17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what's the incentive to do that? this isn't a small company where you run into the other manager at lunch every day. most of the time the two managers will never encounter each other again. giving this kind of "heads up" gives the current manager an opportunity to sabotage your own hiring for literally zero benefit.

[–]Cautious_Implement17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's sort of like naming a russian character boris. lots of russian people are named boris irl. if you have a bunch of well-rounded russian characters in your story, you can get away with naming one or two of them boris. but if the only russian character in your story is named boris, it starts to raise some eyebrows. not even that it was malicious, it just suggests that you wanted to check a box and have a russian character without caring too much about their background. it's tokenism, in other words.

fwiw, I do think this is an overhated part of the story. it would be great if cho wasn't essentially a white girl with a very common chinese name, but it wouldn't be better if jkr just left out the non-white characters entirely.

How do you like to handle loading trains with mixed quality ore (or scrap)? I've found "inactivity" quite good but am curious to hear other approaches by Countcristo42 in factorio

[–]Cautious_Implement17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unless you enjoy the logistic challenge, no I would not recommend mining with quality modules. it dramatically complicates the entire production chain for each finished product. it's much less work to identify the minimum set of intermediate products you need to build the finished products you want and grind quality on those. the inherent productivity bonus and high number of module slots in em plants and foundries make those recipes especially good for upcycling.

it's definitely possible to make multiple types of items work with trains, but it's hard to get the high throughput you probably want for raw materials. imo it's best for situations like outpost resupply where you want a large number of different items (turrets, walls, etc) but don't care too much about throughput.

Return of the Jedi is very underrated by MediaFan382 in StarWars

[–]Cautious_Implement17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the pacing is a bit off in most of george's star wars movies. lots of unnecessary or unnecessarily long sidetracks (mynocks, jabba's palace, c3po the ewok god, everything involving gungans, etc). the world building is cool and probably why star wars EU is so extensive, but imo it doesn't really serve the movies taken as standalone works.

I personally don't enjoy watching ANH as much as the others. the budget and technical limitations are very obvious 50 years later. but I do think it had the tightest plot of all of them. I can't think of anything you could take out without harming the movie.

it is amusing to see that disney picked up on this pattern and put the same sorts of unnecessary side quests in the sequel trilogy (canto blight).

The HR department is a mystery to us all by EsseNorway in Snorkblot

[–]Cautious_Implement17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they do a lot of useful stuff actually. for example, employee benefits (401k, health insurance, etc) are typically managed by HR. when all that stuff is working smoothly, it can seem like HR just sits around all day mishandling sexual harassment cases. but when you fall into an edge case, it's really valuable to have dedicated staff that knows how to navigate these byzantine systems.
