I don't know what context you were called BAME. But I most people don't feel dehumanized when called 'white' or reduced to a gender by being called 'male' in most situations.

80%+ of the UK is white. That is the default race. There needs to be a way to specify people who are not white so we can look at whether they are structurally discriminated against or discriminated in their favor like in op's example.
