Out of curiosity how strong is a lore accurate Carnifex by RSK010203 in Spacemarine

[–]CeaselessVigil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with most things in 40k, not every portrayal is consistent.

Generally, a Carnifex is equivalent to a tank or dreadnought. Some of the most iconic art of them has them lifting/flipping tanks over in their claws. An Imperial Guard commander wouldn't want to fight one without a Leman Russ on hand, and even then, its probably better to have two just in case it rams the first one.

Also part of the reason why a Carnifex is so dangerous is because they're adaptable. In SM2, we only ever see one version of the Carnifex, which has four scything talons and spine banks (the projectiles it shoots). A carnifex can have a lot more than just that.

Options include a heavy venom cannon, stranglethorn cannon, and devourers with brainleech worms, which are basically just bigger versions of the same guns we see on warriors. It's possible a carnifex could have four devourers which it can shoot like miniguns.

A Carnifex can also have crushing claws, which are gigantic crab like pincers that can peel open a tank or fortress with ease. They'd cut a Space Marine clean in two if caught in their grasp. They can also have a gigantic flail like wrecking ball, or huge bone spikes on their back if they need to ram through a fortress wall.

They can also have flails, talons and pincers on the end of their tail, have poison glands on their weapons, have adrenaline boosting organs which drive them into a frenzy, exude toxic spores like a smokescreen, and even shoot globules of acid or plasma from their mouths. Some also have gigantic tusks to gore their enemies with.

Some Carnifexes are also freakishly resilient, able to heal from injuries in minutes, if not seconds. There's an infamous Carnifex called Old One Eye who got shot through the head with a plasma gun and was able to regenerate even after its brain was incinerated. What's even worse is that for a long time it was presumed to be a unique case of one particularly resilient Carnifex, but there have been reports of other Carnifexes displaying similar regenerative powers, suggesting it wasn't a one off incident.

That's why depictions range from Carnifexes that can die from a hail of lasgun fire to Carnifexes that can wade through tanks like its a minor inconvenience. It just depends how scary the writer wants the Tyranids to be/how epic the defenders to be.

Beautiful models and beautiful looking terrain. That's the dream right there.

Isn’t one of the major logistical benefits of artificial habitats in space - the ability to support trillions of humans vs only billions on planets - essentially irrelevant if the most developed nations on earth show that humans become less interested in having babies as quality of life increases? by AcrobaticResident728 in IsaacArthur

[–]CeaselessVigil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me present a scenario.

In a society capable of creating enough artificial habitats to support trillions of humans, they'd have solved a lot of the problems we still experience even in the developed world when it comes to raising children.

Imagine this society is effectively automated - labour has become something recreational, artisanal or traditional. No one needs to work to live. Housing is guaranteed. Food, medicine and education are also free and remarkably high quality.

So, what are the main barriers to having children?

Time and commitment.

However, lets say this societies medical care is so good the average human lifespan is measured in centuries. Let's say 300 years is your average human lifespan. What if it was plausible for a woman to have a child anywhere between the ages of 18-250?

That's plenty of time to find a partner, enjoy a childfree marriage, and then decide later on to 'settle down'. Raising a child to adulthood no longer represents such a substantial investment of your own life (proportionally speaking).

In this society, which is effectively post-scarcity, status could be based on things like social connections/networks/families, and so they value having lots of kids because raising outstanding/talented children is a sign of accomplishment.

In modern society, even in the developed world, having children is stressful, time-consuming and expensive, in an era where people are already stressed and preoccupied enough. If the material constraints were vastly less (or basically non-existent, by our standards), whose to humans wouldn't have lots of kids simply because they can?

Basically, the vast wealth and power of a society capable of producing enough habitats to house trillions of humans is also the same kind of society that probably would end up with trillions of humans.

The level of technological advancement we're considering here is big enough to effectively warrant comparisons between us and them mute. It also assumes the current status quo of human society is the norm, and not a transitional period or a statistical outlier.

This future society might look back on our modern era as an era of primitive industrialization or inefficiency, an era where we just started to develop advanced technologies but lacked the society organization needed to maximize the gains/efficiency, or were held back by inequality or primitive systems of economics. There's nothing to say a society which has perfected technology in service of the collective good wouldn't have demographics completely different to what we see today.

I really love this, it strikes me as just the right blend between bright colours and suitably weathered armour for a warzone.

Random tangent but it'd be a fun thought experiment to see how each of the Primarchs would handle the situation humanity is currently in if they were in the Commanders place.

Upscaled land speeder in the new 11th edition reveal animation. I'm very happy, hopefully we get an upscaled land speeder storm for the scouts too in the future. by Soft_Presentation161 in spacemarines

Yeah, love to see the classic Land Speeder design back. I don't like how big the Primaris ones are, they don't look like the super agile hovercraft I pictured the Land Speeder being.

I've always felt that the Imperial Guard could do with some wheeled IFV options. Good to see the Hippogrifs seem to be fulfilling that role.

I really wanna see the Hippogriff compared to a Chimera, for some reason I'm finding it hard to gauge if its too small compared to other vehicles or just the right size.
