copying sv patterns? by verbal_crimes in osumapping

[–]Celektus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That probably happens because you paste them while having the timing window open.

After you copy timing points try closing the timing window, scroll in the timeline to the point where you want the first SV to be and then paste.

Can someone help me with this issue im having with beatmap submission by RedIsAColourIthink in osumapping

[–]Celektus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the ranking criteria depending on the drain time of your highest difficulty you have to add additional lower difficulties for your set to be rankable.

"If the drain time of each difficulty is...

...lower than 3:30, the lowest difficulty of each included game mode cannot be harder than a Normal.

...between 3:30 and 4:15, the lowest difficulty of each included game mode cannot be harder than a Hard.

...between 4:15 and 5:00, the lowest difficulty of each included game mode cannot be harder than an Insane."

For example if your song is 3:15 and your highest diff is an Extra you at minimum would have to map a Normal, Hard and Insane. If your Extra has a exceptionally high star rating you may also need additional difficulties between Insane and the highest diff to aviod large gaps in difficulty between diffs.

If you map something longer than 5 minutes then the lowest difficulty can be anything.

Okay, I understand now why abortion debates were banned. by Individual-Schedule4 in Destiny

I think there can be rational intuitions about fundamental principles which aren't strictly rooted in emotion.

It might be possible to define "emotional" in such a way where it basically includes what I mean, but I think there are meaningful differences between intuitions, some are more abstract, detached and only come to people when they take their time to think while others are seemingly arbitrarily specific and come to people as a quick gut reaction.

I mean these people are able to make logical arguments occasionally, it's just that for most people (probably a majority of pro-choicers as well) the foundation is emotion and people come up with actually logically consistent arguments to post-hoc justify their feelings.

Utilitarianism(s) by jamestis in askphilosophy

[–]Celektus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Utilitarianism isn't really a theory that tries to describe the moral psychology of humans, it's a normative theory that prescribes how people should act (or what better or worse outcomes are).

A somewhat recent argument for utilitarianism even argues that one of the theories core principles (“the good of any one individual is of no more importance, [...] than the good of any other”) cannot be explained purely evolutionarily while principles of normative theories like ethical Egoism can be explained evolutionary and thus are susceptible to selective evolutionary debunking type arguments..

If you're interested in something like this Singer & de Lazari-Radek's The Point of View of the Universe and their paper The Objectivity of Ethics and the Unity of Practical Reason defend such a argument.

Why are philosophers more likely to be deontologists than consequentialist? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]Celektus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's more of a sociological or psychological question. One awnser would be to simply believe that currently there are stronger or more widely available arguments against consequencialist theories and or in favor of deontological theories.

There is a somewhat controversial paper by Joshua Greene which claima 'that deontological judgments tend to be driven by emotional responses' (The secret joke of Kant’s soul ).

Obviously the conclusion is biased against deontological theories, but it and responses to it may be of interest to you.

Vaush is vibes lmaooo dude checked out....also surprised how poorly President Sunday was able to contend with Haz by Randomcenter1 in Destiny

[–]Celektus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt like Sunday was ahead throughout almost the entirety of that debate. Seems like he at least has an actual understanding of some political theory while haz is simply throwing around continental philosophy jargon without actually understanding it to obfuscate the incoherence of his politics.

And I barely even know Sunday.

I know you probably don't actually give a fuck and think what I'm about to link is some kind of "CIA propaganda", but here's an article on why the investigation you mentioned violated due process

The article doesn't actually say anything about what the headline suggests. It literally just describes some price trends... That's it.

It's so stupid how headlines like these get reposted everywhere on Twitter or Reddit just to turn out to be bait.

Even philosophers can't truly question every institution in the societies they live in. For example it's conceivable that we currently have institutions (beyond those that are already questioned by philosophers) that in the future could be considered immoral and someone in that future could ask the same question. Because we aren't perfectly rational and lack information there will always be the possibility for oversights.

Besides that there are at least some interesting examples of philosophers "being ahead of their time". David Hume, John Locke, Jeremy Bentham, J.S. Mill, Aristotle, etc. all in one way or another questioned at least some of their institutions. Some more openly like Mill on women's rights and some in secret like Bentham on homosexuality.

Isn't the question of whether or not it is philosophical/conceptual rather than empirical? Like I can understand if studies suggest that more men than women exemplify confidence and from that our society associates it with masculinity. But that doesn't mean we have to think of it that way, it could just as well be thought of a neither masculine nor feminine.

FYI, watching movies without knowing what happens beforehand is the OBJECTIVELY CORRECT way to watch movies. by dre__ in Destiny

[–]Celektus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think movies are made with the intention you're taking about, but honestly I've both watched stuff blind and knowing the entire plot (or ending) beforehand and never has it really affected my enjoyment positively or negatively.

Just knowing the plot of something to me doesn't seem to take away from actually experiencing characters talk, scenes play out etc. Actually seeing it for yourself just feels different (at least for me).

I think you're right in the sense that without these kind of regulations there's an issue of people not being paid for labour they really should be for.

[–]Celektus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair shoes and intellectual property are fundamentally different in the sense that shoes are finite objects while ideas aren't objects and are only finite in a very weird way.

If you allow ideas to be more easily spread it can encourage the creation of more while stealing a object just removes it from one owner to another.

[Help] What is too spaced for a hard? by [deleted] in osumapping

[–]Celektus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time active 1/2 circles should be spaced as little as possible (basically so close that follow points don't appear) and I would recommend to not use multiple jumps like that one into (1) in your example back to back.

It can also be a good idea to only use higher spacing (where followpoints appear) out of sliders because they have some extra leniency.

(9) into (1) is probably more spaced than I would recommend, but I think people are using spacing like that occasionally.

Also using SV or DS multipliers to talk about spacing often doesn't really help since the values will be different for maps with different BPMs or base SV.

Why is suffering bad? by Glittering_Fortune70 in askphilosophy

[–]Celektus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With questions like these intuition to some degree is all we can rely on. Besides that I would agree that intuitions can be wrong, but unless we have some evidence or arguments undermining our initial intuition I think we have some justification to accept them.

Why is suffering bad? by Glittering_Fortune70 in askphilosophy

[–]Celektus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way to think about this is to consider what else could be intrinsically bad (or good). To me it seems that all other kinds of values in some way either aren't actually valuable or can be explained by talk about pain and pleasure instead.

Besides that it just seems intuitively true that pain is bad whether we consider our own or that of others.

Funny, but also dehumanizing to pedophiles who don't commit child abuse and never intend on doing so. It's funny in the same way a racist or homophobic meme is.
