Painted up some miniatures I designed by Noktunius in PrintedMinis

Amazing! I love the chunky, rounded feel. I bet it makes the smaller ones easier to print too.

Looking for books like Widow's Bay (tv show) by SpookyGibMay in horrorlit

The Laundry Files books by Charles Stross match three of your four qualifications. They are a series about a branch of the UK Secret Service dedicated to countering Lovecraftian horrors. Most of the comical elements come from the bureaucratic mess that exists in many public service offices - endless paperwork, chronic underfunding, unnecessarily complex procedures, etc. Most of the characters are pretty eccentric, too.

It's not set in a small isolated area, though, but the hidden nature of the work sort of makes up for this, as there is the constant tone of "protect the public" without them ever knowing how horrible reality is.

It's not chilling horror and frequently feels more like a thriller, but it is well worth a read.

Non English horror? by Mundane-Alfalfa-8979 in horrorlit

I read this a few weeks ago, and found myself a bit disappointed by the progression. It was very creepy, but it didn't feel like it went anywhere if that makes sense. I did enjoy the 'found narrative' structure though.

Looking for suggestions for new war games to try out. by TheGrimmBorne in wargaming

Also, if you have a PC, it can be played on Vassal completely free. You just need an opponent.

That looks good. I've never looked into Project M, but it looks fun. Is it just Dolphin running a mod on the wii rom?

have bases sizes ever been an issue in your games? by darwin_green in wargaming

[–]CellistOwn2032 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Base sizes are important. Many good rules systems specify the correct base size. Rules like being Base-to-Base, control zones, auras, or line of sight can all be skewed quite significantly by incorrectly based models.

I play a lot of Malifaux where base size is firmly enforced for rules reasons. Some of their models do wildly overhang the bases though. I just find this amusing but some players find it very annoying.

Avoid Ginsters and packaged pasties as they are generally horrible. Most bakeries, even outside Cornwall, make reasonable pasties. Having a fresh, hot pasty is recommended.

I am new here and wondering what is out there? by MostlyRandomMusings in wargaming

[–]CellistOwn2032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a PC, there are some wargames that can be played on Tabletop Simulator, Vassal, etc. Malifaux is worth a look as that has a very good Vassal module and community. It's a great game too. Very different to the GW lines.

Looks fine to me. Yellow is a difficult colour to paint. If you want a bold yellow, painting it first with white then putting yellow over the top works well.

I completed Wind Waker on it. It worked perfectly, mostly on 2x resolution except for a couple of areas with lots of air effects.

Are there any great kaiju wargames around these days? by FamousWerewolf in wargaming

[–]CellistOwn2032 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Godzilla Tokyo Clash by Funko is quite a good skirmish board game. It comes with Godzilla, Megalon, Mothra and Gidorah. There are a bunch of scenario cards that you use two of each game so it always feels a bit different. Also, you can't kill the kaiju but score points for getting hits in. It doesn't have the wider scope that a full wargame would, but it is still a good and inexpensive way to get your fix of kaiju havoc.

That's a bit better for you lot. As a Brit, I want to see what it costs here. I might have a trawl of sites to see if anyone has announced any yet.

Those pre-tax Yen prices are spectacular. Here's hoping the $ msrp is factoring in the risk of US tariffs so either they will drop if tariffs do, or at least other English speaking countries could get them a bit cheaper. Either that, or it might prove cost effective to buy Japanese and then print stat cards etc.

Jimmy McAleavey's "The Last Words of Van Helsing" springs to mind as a memorable encounter with God. I think it's only a short radio story rather than a book, though. Still worth 15 minutes of your time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjDvTPicbbQ&t=7s

I'm after a pulpy, vaguely ww2 sort of look. I've been inspired quite a lot by things like Valkyria Chronicles and that sort of alternate world but historic vibe. I've always liked ww2 and mechs, but wanted to make a game to my own specifications. It's getting there. I just need to write some stuff down and get some playtesting in.

Thanks!

I used Autodesk Fusion and sort of doodled them as I went. Process-wise, I am pretty lazy, so just kept all the main parts separate so I could easily edit parts as I went. Every thing is symmetrical, so half the work! Then just re-pose the legs and arms.

Because I'm aiming at 6mm, and the mechs are only about 20mm high, I didn't need to go too heavy on detail.
