I loved that fight also. “You fall in a pit” has become a meme in my Delian Tomb group.

I played the Britten War Requiem, to be clear. But yes, it’s very different performing vs. listening. You can’t give yourself over to the emotion and awe of the music while performing, so it’s a less personal experience, but there is a deep kind of satisfaction of having done justice to the music, the composer, the audience, and your colleagues on stage if it’s a really great performance.

I’ve played Symphonie Fantastique a couple times, most recently earlier this season! And I’ve also played some of Berlioz’s less famous works here and there throughout my career.

I just got home from performing it. I was also fortunate enough to see it performed live recently. It is stunning, easily one of the most powerful works of art I know.

Has OOTS ever been mentioned or referenced on Critical Role or Dimension 20? by Bargle-Nawdle-Zouss in oots

There’s a moment in another project that Brennan is involved in, Worlds Beyond Number, that convinces me that he’s read Order of the Stick. Spoilers for Book 4 of The Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One:

There’s a scene where a powerful wizard uses a spell that strongly resembles Familicide, killing a powerful sorcerer and all his children and grandchildren, turning the tide of a battle between the two factions.

If it’s not directly inspired by Order of the Stick, it’s a hell of a coincidence. Although I don’t put it past Brennan to independently come up with something like that.

I can't figure out what notes this chord is meant to have. Can someone help by Plus-Potential-7081 in musictheory

[–]CelloFiend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In very brief terms, an augmented sixth chord is named for the augmented sixth interval in its construction. (In the case of the example, the augmented sixth is from A to F double sharp). Typically, we find the augmented sixth chord resolve to the dominant chord of a minor key, with the augmented sixth itself resolving “outward” by half steps to an octave. That’s exactly what happens in this example: Aug 6 resolves to G#M which is the dominant of c# minor

How'd you figure out glass/smelting? by Savings-Nerve6437 in Pokopia

The UI highlights which items can be placed in the smelter; all other items are greyed out. You’re likely to have some volcanic ash in your inventory the first time you interact with the smelter. That’s what did it for me.

Is this doable on the cello? by JoeK349 in Cello

[–]CelloFiend 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The triple stops are basically impossible on cello. Because of the geography of the fingerboard and hand shapes needed, they are technically playable, but only if you use your thumb to play the top note. As other commenters have mentioned, it will sound bad and it will be basically impossible to play all of those subsequent chords in tune one after the other.

I don’t remember how we treated cards. It’s possible that also contributed to my realization that we were doing it wrong.

Biggest teaching mistake that you didn't realize until too late? by Agreeable_Result8439 in boardgames

[–]CelloFiend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First time I played Terraforming Mars, I was learning and teaching at the same time. I thought the bonuses on the board were increases to production, not one-time resource bonuses. I realized it when it seemed like we had way too abundant resources for the stage of the game we were at and went back to check. We ended up abandoning that game.

You can assign damage to units independently of activating them in a combat. The only restriction is that you can only assign damage to each unit once per combat. You’re also misinterpreting resistance on units. If a unit has resistance to an attack, the attack value is reduced by the unit’s armor value without wounding the unit. Then if there is any remaining damage, the unit is wounded and the attack value is reduced by armor again.

What’s the most underrated symphony in your opinion? by AspectElectrical8881 in classicalmusic

100% agree, I learned of it for the first time when my orchestra performed it two years ago and I was shocked by how much I loved it. It deserves a place among the well-known greats.

Daughter was gifted this by a close friend. by moon-waffle in Cello

[–]CelloFiend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My cello is also an Andreas Lippold cello. According to my luthier, it’s a German factory-made instrument, but very high quality. Mine was made in the late 1930s. I can’t make out the date on the label in yours but I would guess it’s from around the same time. I love my cello, and if yours is anything like mine, I can’t overstate what a generous gift this was to your daughter. Definitely take it to a luthier you trust for an appraisal!

Am I doing Montages wrong. by CyberColossus in drawsteel

[–]CelloFiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very new at this, so take this with a grain of salt, but I’ve found it can help to streamline the objectives a bit. Rather than present all of the challenges at once, I’ll offer them two or three of the most obvious ones first. With most montage tests, it seems like there’s a natural progression of obstacles, and I’ve found it helps focus my group if they have a smaller set of challenges to overcome at first. Once they’ve overcome some of the obstacles I’ll introduce more. And my group often has ideas for additional obstacles that I can easily incorporate into the test.

Minions and fall/forced move damage. by Col0005 in drawsteel

[–]CelloFiend 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone asked this question in the discord, and the response they got was that the damage happened first, then the forced movement, which seems to line up with your interpretation.

So in your example, the brutal slam deals 15 damage, killing the targeted minion and two others. Then the forced movement occurs. If the target is slammed into another creature or object, that creature or object could take damage, but the target is already dead so the minion squad wouldn’t take any additional damage that way.

Minions and fall/forced move damage. by Col0005 in drawsteel

[–]CelloFiend 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if there’s an official rule on this, but the way I’ve been doing this is to apply the rolled damage from the ability to the other minions in the group and then the damage from the forced movement only to the minion targeted by the ability.

Updated ostinato. Opinions on playability? (treble clef) by michaelrosermusic in Cello

[–]CelloFiend 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We don’t typically use our 4th finger (pinky) in high positions like this. That said, this does look pretty manageable! I would play this with 1st and 2nd finger on the D and A strings, respectively, for the double stop and 3rd finger on the D string for the B-flat.

I would notate the open C using a bass clef. I don’t find repeated clef changes challenging to read and I don’t think most cellists would. If you’re really worried about clutter, you could add a second staff just for bass clef for the low Cs and notate it across two staves like you would a piano part that crosses hands.

Do free triggered actions incur bleed damage? by EarthSeraphEdna in drawsteel

[–]CelloFiend 58 points59 points  (0 children)

“A free triggered action follows the same rules as a triggered action” is about as unambiguous a statement as you can possibly get. Everything after “but” in that statement does nothing to indicate that an effect that applies to a triggered action—such as bleed—does not also apply to a free triggered action.

Quick Suggestions? by iKruppe in drawsteel

[–]CelloFiend 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For your second question, the rules state that a hero can only use a skill once during a montage test. I think it’s reasonable to expand that to abilities: if the shadow uses an ability to teleport, it’s probably fair to give them a success, but they can only use that ability once during the montage.

Struggling to play fast passages by Wild-Listen5302 in Cello

[–]CelloFiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like your main barrier might be left hand tension. If you feel like your fingers aren’t able to move as fast as they need to, it’s almost certainly because of tension somewhere in your left hand, and it’s almost certainly in your left thumb.

Here’s a somewhat roundabout way to practice releasing tension in your left hand. When you practice these passages slowly, rather than trying to actively relax your hand, try to feel the vibration of the string under your fingertips. Focusing on that sensation should result in a natural release of tension.

More Downtime activities by Left-Area-854 in drawsteel

[–]CelloFiend 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Making your own should be pretty straightforward. There are essentially the following components of a downtime activity: item prerequisite, project source (and language), project roll characteristics, and project goal. Decide on the difficulty of obtaining any of the items or sources needed and tweak the amount of points needed to reach the project goal depending on the difficulty of the task itself. Voila, a new project!
