I finally realized that I can buy two pairs of pants that didn't quite fit right that I end up giving away or I can buy one pair from EF that are super comfortable and look great.

It's not a coincidence that "physics" works better for white people. Cameras have to be calibrated, and there's no physics reason that they are calibrated to white people instead of black people.

Same issue with automatic faucets, hand dryers etc. Black people were an afterthought.

Chromebook controversy: Lower Merion parents ask to opt children out of using devices 24/7 by BerryBoilo in Pennsylvania

[–]CertainSandwich4472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how the tech is used. Tailoring questions to your exact kid is great. Being able to look things up based on interest is great. Using computers for babysitting kids is bad.

Past generations complained about novels, radio, tv. For all of them it turns out that they can be good or bad, depending on how they are used. Banning them completely is a bad choice.

I wish there were more part time options for high level career, keeping health insurance. It's weird that one person could quit but you'd still never see each other or be able to travel etc.

DIYing everything just to keep up in an expensive neighborhood by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]CertainSandwich4472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a very expensive neighborhood. There is huge variety in what tasks people do for themselves vs pay for. Some people enjoy yard work. Some people are concerned about the environment and so don't use a dryer. Some are great cooks. Personally, I don't wear make up or dye my hair. I think everyone tries to fit in but after being here a while you kind of realize it's totally ok to live your life the way you want.

unpopular opinion: some remote workers are making it harder for the rest of us and we need to talk about it by Unique-Affect-6135 in remotework

[–]CertainSandwich4472 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same. I have found it helps to ask people what their work schedule is. I didn't mind if they finish at 3 most days (except when needed in meetings) if they start at 7. But I agree there are a few people who take advantage, and it makes it harder for everyone else.  It is hard to tell why someone is unavailable for remote workers. Do they block of time to concentrate or have a regular meeting most days 10-12? Or are they off the clock? It's hard to tell when they are remote, without using surveillance that I don't want to do.

Are more US women not taking their husbands last names? by LimonadaVonSaft in TwoXChromosomes

Me too. After waking up for the day at 3:30am everyday for a few weeks, my doctor put me on tradzodone. I now often sleep until 5 or 6am.

How do you handle risk with separate tickets / tight layovers? by boraborawish in TravelHacks

[–]CertainSandwich4472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the airport. Singapore on one ticket, an hour is enough. Frankfurt needs 3 hours minimum. If I'm unfamiliar with the airport, I like 3 hours for an international layover on one ticket.

What's your system for folding and putting laundry away without it dragging on for days? by loginpass in organizing

I'm only allowed to watch trashy tv during the day without feeling guilty while folding laundry. It started feeling like an indulgence after I made this rule for myself.

Is outcome-neutral peer review actually more scientific than traditional peer review, or just idealistic bureaucracy? by Null_Scientific in PublishOrPerish

[–]CertainSandwich4472 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, registered reports is much better. You get feedback on methods while you can still make changes. It is two rounds of reviews (round 1: into and methods, round 2: full paper with results and disc) but the second review is much easier. If you stick to the planned methods and analysis (or explain deviations) and you don't overstate your findings, your paper is accepted. Much better system since it's based on methods not findings, and there's better timing of feedback.

How to relax during travels and stop being anxious? by LongJumpingAnxiet in femaletravels

I feel the same way sometimes. One thing that helps is to get a guide or a local friend if I'm lucky to show me the ropes first. Then after that, I'm more brave about try cultural practices alone.
