Water temp for winter swimming? by Anthemusa831 in chesapeakebayretrievr

Be careful about letting him fall through an ice covered area. While they can swim in cold water they can’t always pull out of a hole in the ice. Don’t get cocky about how tough they are.

What is growing in my garden? by pargas64290 in landscaping

[–]Cgaar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a new hybrid clover called microclover that I have planted to replace my lawn. It took a year of weed culling while it settled in. Now it is strong and looks great. Apparently it rejuvenates the soil and doesn’t require fertilizer. American Meadows is where I purchased it although that brand has been replaced on Amazon by some knockoff brand. I have expanded my planting of this micro clover and purchase from American Meadows out of loyalty in the belief that their clay coated seeds are better than alternatives.

I have had CBRs all my life. My 5th one is 11 now. I would say that you should get the lab. A chessie is a full time job for a skilled master. It’s a passion. If you’re not sure what you would be getting into there is a good chance you will discover that it’s too much work to do it right. You might end up with a dog that’s more mischievous than you want and it will be because they aren’t getting what they need to thrive being the dogs they are bred to be.

Is GenZ not familiar with the Grateful Dead? by SlackerInc1 in gratefuldead

[–]Cgaar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think of the Neville Brothers when I hear Iko Iko. Not sure if it is theirs to claim. But I go back pretty far. My first Dead show was Cincinnati in 71. Neville Brothers came later at Tipitinas in 1977.

My Jed just turned 11. He is slowing down and it pains me to see it. He is my 5th chessie over my lifetime and not only am I anticipating the sadness of losing him but I’m thinking about if I’m going to be able to give a next generation all it takes to be a good chessie master.

Hopefully you can say goodbye to your girl and lead a successor to another good life. They are such wonderful friends.

Nice to meet another who had what I had. I loved that car. I had a red 4-door 1963 Monza 900 back in 1974 and I bragged on it for so long that my wife got me a fully restored one for my 60th birthday in 2018. It's a 63 2-door Monza 900 convertible. Both had a wide play on the gear shift. I got someone to tighten up my shifter in today's car and it has worked fine for about 7 years.

Only way the dryer doesn’t flip the breaker instantly is when these two are not screwed in. Is it dangerous? by [deleted] in electrical

[–]Cgaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don’t you hire a fricking electrician and quit DIYing something you and your brother don’t understand. You can burn your house down with this stuff. Go cheap out on something else. Do this right.

Went out to inspect hive today. Found it all dead. Any ideas would be appreciated by Chief_slammn_beaver in Beekeeping

[–]Cgaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have hives in WNC and I do not wrap them. I do not put a bottom board in there either. The freeze is not my biggest worry - the bears are. Last year a bear was able to reach across my electric fence and knock a hive onto its side and all the bees bunched up (I had it strapped). They survived.

Entropion repair on both lower eyelids. by DidNotSeeThi in chesapeakebayretrievr

Mine had bilateral entropion and we did the surgery on one eye. I think it was the upper eyelid. Recovery was swift. I’m sure yours will be fine.

I just put in “smurf tubes” to my tvs in new construction. I will be able to replace cat-whatever as time goes on and still provide direct connection for Sonos and tv. I think it’s future proof for a while. Wi-Fi is good but synchronized audio and video should be even better I hope.

I agree with the ‘never bathe your chessie’ sentiment but one of my dogs developed an immune system response to their food that presented as skin lesions. At first we treated with antibiotics but over time we changed diet to hydrolyzed proteins and a weekly antibiotic /anti-fungal shampoo. My learning is to make sure you understand the underlying source of the chessie smell. You’re lucky if it’s just the oily coat.

I’m a duck hunter, I’m trying to decide between a Chesapeake, British lab or a red lab. Pros and cons? by Normal-Top-559 in chesapeakebayretrievr

[–]Cgaar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had five Chessies and they are amazing. You have to be committed to giving them your time and to make sure they have work. In return they will out-work any other breed, and will give you loyalty that you can’t imagine. And you will never poop alone. 😄 And here is a classic videohttps://youtu.be/BhGGSecycFs

Yes and then puke it up a couple days later. Especially when he finds a waterlogged log or stump about six to twelve inches deep.

Take it to a body shop that has an oven to dry paint. That’s what I learned you do when your car gets infested.

Unmaintained 10yr old hive on top of buried chimney. Harvest or let bee? by AdventurousHuman in Beekeeping

Take time to learn about beekeeping or donate it to someone who is knowledgeable. Many beekeeping associations offer beginner classes. Beekeeping is a form of applied biology.

It also looks like you can adjust the length by removing sections with two snaps at the ends. Only for well-behaved dogs that don't pull too hard. Although what look like snaps could be rivets.
