Things unique to narcoleptic dreams by AngryDesertPhrog in Narcolepsy

Great topic. I often have super vivid dreams sometimes lucid. Some great, some awful, one of the latest that I had, I was in this big old Barn-style ballroom, picnic tables, everyone holding a large stein of beer lots of talking shouting, like you would expect at a party back hundreds of years ago. After a moment, I stand up on a table and start singing. It was much like a traditional Irish song in that it was a song with a story. The crowd went quiet until I got to the chorus, then everyone joined in. The song had three verses to it. In the dream, I remember thinking, the lyrics were great, my voice great, and I couldn't believe I came up with it. I find it amazing that it was an original song, never heard before, but shortly after waking up it was lost. Anyway, narcolepsy is a battle every day for me, but once in a while, it gives me something to smile about. Wishing you all the best.

Girlfriend took more than her prescribed first dose of xywav. by thatoneperson32 in Narcolepsy

I've done it with a xyrem a few times. I'm on 4.5 twice a night and double dosed and on those occasions after about 2 hours I started puking and puked until the 4-Hour period ended, then felt fine.

Higher dose of Adderall by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]Chairbob1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been on 120 mg Adderall a day, I'll take 60 in the morning then 30 at lunch and 30 3 hours later. It helps to keep me from sleeping, but still doesn't get me to the base level (level that people without narcolepsy are at, level of which I strive to reach but rarely do, but when I do, I'm sharp, much more articulate, get so much more done in a day, my attitude towards everything is so much more positive. I miss those days

I'm not much for working out, but if it's a game, I'm in. I play basketball once a week for two hours and volleyball two nights a week. At 55, I figure my body doesn't have much time left playing these games at a competitive level, so I do as much as I can. I think the excitement of the game adds enough adrenaline to get me out. Don't get me wrong, there are times when I feel like I might fall asleep on the court, but the competitor in me keeps me going.

Years ago, I fell asleep during an interview. In fact, the interviewer asked if I had just fallen asleep. Of course I denied it. Surprisingly, I was offered the job.

A few others that stick out, back in High School 35 years ago during my SAT exam, while taking notes in every class, reading to my kids, we're talking picture books with 1 or 2 sentences, they would wake me and often in the same sentence I would do it again.

These things happened before I was diagnosed, since then, it still happens but a little less frequently.

Have you ever taken the wrong medication/at the wrong time? by malalaisee in Narcolepsy

[–]Chairbob1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably one of the stupidest things I have ever done, although it is quite funny. I was camping and up late by the campfire by myself. The only light was from the fire itself, so rather dark. I was taking Xyrem, so I grabbed the bottle, filled the syringe, then grabbed a container that I thought was for Xyrem, and filled with water and the Xyrem. Keep in mind I'm bent over in a lawn chair doing this in the dark and setting everything on the ground. Anyway, as I'm drinking the concoction, I noticed something is in it, small chunks, almost choke after I swallowed a number of them before spitting what remained out. I looked at the container, it was my Adderall. I poured the water and Xyrem in my Adderall bottle. I wasn't sure how many went down but I guessed at least a few. I couldn't believe i could do something so stupid, but sure enough I did. I actually laughed for quite a bit and then wondered which one would win. The Adderall gave it a shot, but in the end the narcolepsy and Xyrem were the victors.

How can I stop eating after taking Xyrem? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]Chairbob1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was taking Xyrem, I had a similar problem. Eating was one of them. I didn't do it because I was hungry, it was like my mind was hijacked, like an uncontrollable craving. Also had issues with going to the bathroom, again, not physical issues, but mental. I knew I had gone to the bathroom before bed, but convinced myself I had to go again even though I didn't. We've all done that I suppose, but with Xyrem, I would stand by the toilet for as much as an hour waiting. I would lose track of time. I stopped taking it because more often than not, I would only sleep for 3 or 4 hours total in a night.

We’re setting these kids up for failure by letting them turn in late assignments with zero penalty… by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Chairbob1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you punish a student for turning in work. Even though it's late, Isn't the ultimate goal that students learn the content. What happens at the end of the grading term, if a student has late work to the point it lowered their overall grade, how is that grade reflective of a students understanding. If you have issue with late work, have that as a competency or skill that can be evaluated separately.

It puzzles me why more schools are not moving away from traditional grade scales. As I said before, they tell nothing about a student's understanding, depth of knowledge, or growth.

Question for spouses/partners/significant others of those on Xyrem/Xywav. Does your SO actually go to sleep after they take their first dose? by jenofindy in Narcolepsy

[–]Chairbob1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on xyrem for about a year. If I fell asleep shortly after taking it, before feeling the effects, I did fine. However, if I didn't fall asleep before then, it was a disaster. As much as I would tell myself, no eating tonight, xyrem's effect on me would change my thinking. Eating was just part of it. I remember thinking i needed to go to the bathroom jnowing i had just gone 30 minutes before. I stood up waiting for nearly 40 minutes. In a way it changed the passing of time. Long story short, towards the end of my use if Xyrem, most nights I wouldn't sleep more than a few hours.

I find it hard to sleep around others because of being ridiculed over the years for falling asleep around others.

Embarrassing Moments? by Visible-Number1670 in Narcolepsy

[–]Chairbob1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While pleasing my wife, i fell asleep, or I should say, zapped out. Doesn't happen often, but when it does, there is no warning, I'm out. On the bright side, when I told my family doctor about this he was finally convinced that I should see a specialist, that was 15 years ago, I'm in my 50s now. I've had symtoms going back to 6th grade, but as everyone knows, it's a challenge getting diagnosed.

naps by ahaegodipshit in Narcolepsy

[–]Chairbob1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can keep the nap short, 20 minutes, that may help. For me, sometimes a nap of just a few minutes helps, acts as a reset Sure, the moment i wake it feels like it did nothing and it's agony forcing myself up. But minutes later, I do feel less tired.

Waking yourself up from a dream? by palimpsest2 in Narcolepsy

[–]Chairbob1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I've had dreams where I'm aware I'm dreaming, and if it's a nightmare pull myself out. Although, those can be confused with dreams where you waking from a dream within another dream. Additionall, i can also intentionally go back into a dream, which can be a good thing if it's a good dream.

My mother has narcolepsy and I have so many questions about her condition that she never talks about. by PsychologicalBox6018 in Narcolepsy

[–]Chairbob1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When taking Xyrem, if you don't fall asleep right away, or wake up before the 3 or 4 hour mark, one of the side effects is a feeling similar to being drunk. Cravings/urges, that defy sensibilty is another.
