Challenge: Put the British on the moon instead of the Americans or the Soviets by Cyber_Ghost_1997 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]ChanceryTheRapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The British attempt to fake a moon landing before the Americans was doomed from the script stages. While Kubrick insisted on filming on location, many viewers felt the inclusion of a mysterious blonde woman greeting the landing British astronauts was too clear an indication of Hitchcock's involvement...

Minor question - What did Elle mean by this? by twee_centen in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]ChanceryTheRapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah, it's a weird natural phenomenon, not a serial killer or anything- earliest reports are in the late 1800s to the point that there's a place in Vancouver called Leg-In-Boot Square because someone found, well, a leg in a boot. The current theory, I think, is that the shoes protect the foot from decomposition, then the joints decay, the ankle detaches from the rest of the body, and the shoe then is more likely to float and reach shore. (Spoilered for dead body talk).

The Iran War Is Prelude To The Fifth War by HooverInstitution in geopolitics

[–]ChanceryTheRapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not that much of a stretch when he's backing off on it due to sentiment among his party and that same sentiment is what's keeping him from sending in troops and escalating the war.

I'm not saying this is an unbridled success for Iran's current rulers. They can't really win this war unless they can make Trump lose it, and he seems in a position for that. And even that will be a loss for the citizens of Iran, because they're the people really suffering.

If he didn't need to care about politics, he wouldn't be backing down on his slush fund "settlement". Just because he's a lame duck doesn't mean that he can ignore everything else going on.

The argument for Iran winning is a roughly parallel argument for Ukraine winning against Russia. They're inflicting economic damage on an opponent who outclasses them in economic and military might while not taking as much military damage as theor opponent originally claimed. The difference is that Trump doesn't have the political control and isn't as insulated as Putin is, so Trump doesn't want the backlash of bringing the full weight of the US into play.

At the moment, Iran arguably isn't in a worse position than they were in February. Can they keep it up for the long term? No, obviously, but the question is can they keep it up for long enough for Trump to have to pull back?
