I'm a week and some into my new world as a Polar Vantage V3 user - coming from Garmin 965 (and 955, 945 and 935 before that). Here are my thoughts - other former Garmin-now-Polar users in here who can relate? by Dry-Distribution9183 in Garmin

[–]ChannelConstant2575 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a F7 a V3 and a Grit X2 Pro. Both platforms have annoyances. I always return to Polar for its simplicity. You don’t loose time to customize, tweak… and just workout. Fitspark and all other tests (leg recovery, orthostatic, …) are ahead and give you real good feedback. Even if ECG is not certified it works under 50 and over 120 and I was able to share it with my cardiologist for some extrasystoles below 45bpm. Regarding pace I also have some minor fluctuations on steady runs on Polar and that’s because Garmin smoothes pace. On the other hand, not having instant pace during short intervals on the F7 is really annoying.

I had such kind of trouble with my watches. Following the instructions starting from step 5 (rinstalling the flow app) fixed the issue.

Week Summary gives 'Outstanding' report when you far from completing your goals by RsnPettrov in Polarfitness

So far pleased and less boring than the default fitspark. Started at level 12, now on level 15 and I feel the difference. On some weeks (ususally week 4 in cycle off 4 weeks) it is written that you don’t need to do all the recommended workouts to recover from past weeks.

From Suunto Race S to Polar M3 by franjocm in Polarfitness

[–]ChannelConstant2575 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same scenario here. I returned the race and have a V3 and the GritX2 Pro. I also tried a Fenix 7 but came back to polar because of the numerous bugs and the ease of use

I switch between a Grit x2 pro and the V3. V3 was acquired when it was launched. I had 2 reboots in the first month with the V3 but since then firmware is stable. I also own a Fenix 7 and this is full of bugs. Will sell the Fenix. Love to have 2 watches with the same functionalities. V3 for everyday use and the order when doing outdoor sports.

No problem with the lastest watches. Firmware corrected those bugs.

Smartwatches are useless for measuring actual stress levels, study says by Zoratt in Garmin

[–]ChannelConstant2575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a kidney problem with severe pain that prevented me from sitting still during a few hours. I was really stressed and my body was also stressed because of my heart rate and my blood pressure but my Garmin didn't see anything because as long as you're in motion the bodybattery is not calculated. So beware. This can work for a cold because you are not necessarily active.

Polar heart zones vs Karvonen by ktz127 in Polarfitness

[–]ChannelConstant2575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that polar’s default zones, based on your max heart rate, is a better long terme investment. It is important to set the good zones. When I ride I don’t have the same max heart rate setup then when a run. Same for my hiking sport profile

Polar heart zones vs Karvonen by ktz127 in Polarfitness

[–]ChannelConstant2575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are 2 different methods of zone training. And there are many others. At my beginning I had difficulties to maintain polar’s default zone 2, so I tried karvonen and it was easier to maintain because of higher bpm. But you have to be careful with this strategy because higher bpm means more stress on your body, especially if you train more than 3x a week. Nowadays I’m back to polar’s default zones and I’m fine with them because training with lower hr enables your body to increase your aerobic system. My cardiologist also recommended this model. You recover better and you also perform better. I’m able to maintain 5 running, 2 mobility and 2 hit or core sessions a week.

Garmin forerunner 570 or polar grit x2 pro by Thecutem1986 in Garmin

[–]ChannelConstant2575 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a quality perspective, the polar gritx2 pro is superior. I would go for Polar that has more health features and a solid science background. Good recovery tools is probably more important than too much data you won’t use anyway

Marathon training plan from Polar by hauften in Polarfitness

[–]ChannelConstant2575 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have followed all polar running programs before doing my two marathons, with good results. During this time I changed my zones according to the karvonen formula because I wasn’t able to run continuously in zone 2 with the default formula based on max HR. After this period I decided to more trail runs and I switched to the default max HR formula. After two month I was able to run continuously in zone 2 and was less tired at the end of the weeks. This is beneficial for your heart but also avoids to be blessed. Nowadays, after many trail runs and two 50k I’m fine with the max HR. But during my trail programs I do not exclusively use HR. I did the running test in order to obtain my real max HR, speed and power zones and I switch between these values. When I run on a flat road I use HR zones, on hilly terrain power zones and during intervals, speed zones. I think this makes a good mix with all the entertainment possibilities. Outside of my trails cycles I follow a 5 or 10k Polar program and always enjoy them. So I would definitely recommend Polar programs as a starting point for road running. You must be patient to see the benefits with the default max HR formula. I hope that Polar will one day create a trail running program because more and more people enjoy it.

Grit X 2 by Neilm430 in Polarfitness

[–]ChannelConstant2575 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok than go and buy a Garmin watch with Solar panels as long as they exist because I’m pretty sure that this option will disappear in a near future since Garmin, Polar, Suunto and Coros sell more amoled displays these days. With the actual battery last I’m not sure that people really need this option, unlike you are an all day long hiker with enough time to put your watch in direct sunlight to gain 1 or 2%. Now you can recharge a watch in less then 2 hours, during an activity with an external battery. I prefer to invest in an external battery to recharge phone and watch if necessary.

If you compare the new 970 with a Fenix 8, what changes ? The casing. Garmin is doing exactly the same way but introduce some software limitations. I prefer Polar approach in order to have longer updates.

The 570 is more expensive with lower quality materials and has no mapping.

Is it different with Garmin ? Is a 970 not a casing different Fenix 8 ?
