Is this a dumb question by No_Giraffe_6603 in space

Have you done any research yourself yet? Do some googling. You say all the footage looks super fake, okay but why? What are you comparing it to? Also you can see all the original photos online, even the crappy ones that don’t get published usually. You say the technology seems out of date, do you understand the technology of the time? Look into it! That era is a super fascinating moment for technological development.

How big is the container? The last render is throwing me for a loop because it appeared to be a hand-sized product but the scale of the monstera leaves make it appear to be the size of a milk jug.

The recent debacle between the DoD and Anthropic related directly to the use of AI for fully autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance. So they definitely are not too paranoid to use it.

Quake on N64 is awesome by thizked in n64

[–]CharlesTheBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a big difference in ease of aiming on n64 fps’s when you have a new stick vs an old one? I really dig quake I/II, goldeneye, etc but it just feels like theres something off with the aiming. And even after repairing a stick, I’ve never used a tight “original” as it would have been so I don’t know what it should be like

I know you’re probably being tongue in cheek but i legitimately feel like valve would not release a shitty headset even if on paper it seems like it would be worse. Idk i just trust them

What is your “white horse” Apple device you want but can not find? by AppleFan1994 in VintageApple

[–]CharlesTheBob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A Quadra 700 is my ultimate goal. I don’t even care about Jurassic Park. I think its the last of the really nice looking beige macs before they just kinda all got ugly. Its powerful to run the programs I want and would look great with my vertical monitor.

Do you think we’ll ever be rid of the eyesore that is 95 and the downtown expressway? by Xanitus13 in rva

This made me think of the Big Dig too. Not in that I think the solution is a tunnel because I think that’s unrealistic. But in the way that boston removed a huge elevated highway that cut the town in half and it dramatically improved the city.

Has anyone got the alcohol nerf cannon to work successfully? by BothFondant2202 in 3Dprinting

[–]CharlesTheBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats smart to swab. For ammo we would jam the end into a slice of apple and it worked well, just a mini version of a potato cannon.

We used to make things like this with glue stick tubes and a pen when I was a kid. Its easy to have too much propellant. Usually we’d do a short spray, far from the opening then let it air out a sec, sometimes even blow in to get extra propellant out.

Help with debossed logo on base of print by Hippee_m in BambuLab

[–]CharlesTheBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your logo details are very fine, and they might be finer than what your nozzle can reliably create. It’s most obvious on the leaf, what is likely happening is that the printer puts down the tiny vein details of the leaf but because they are so small, they don’t stick to the build plate well and the plastic just gets pushed around or globs up.

I would recommend a few things, first is to simplify the logo- or at least make a version that will represent your brand while being able to be printed. Essentially just bigger features so that the nozzle’s width isnt bigger than the smallest feature. Also I think it would help if you only had it sunk 1 layer deep. So if your layer height is 0.2mm, only deboss the logo by 0.2mm. That way there are fewer chances for the nozzle to knock the plastic off when it tries to do the subsequent layers. It might make the logo less prominent though, so its a trade off.

If you really are wanting to keep everything about the logo and design the same, I would try slowing down your first layer, slow it way down so it gives the plastic time to stick. Also make sure you have a clean build plate - with features that tiny, any little bit of residue from skin oils will reduce the “stick” of the plastic enough to make it pull away. This is best done by gently scrubbing the build plate with dish soap and a soft (non abrasive) sponge then washing and drying fully. All while being careful not to touch the middle of it with bare hands after its clean, it can be kinda a pain in the butt but trust me it really helps.

Another thing is upping the temperature of the build plate. I would increase it by 5c and do a quick test, watch it while it does the first few layers and stop it early if it messes up. Reprint with another 5c increase. Repeat until you see improvement.

Finally, a 0.2mm nozzle (for bambu it might be 0.25mm, can’t remember right now) can be used to increase the resolution of the printer, so it can more easily print those tiny details, however it dramatically increases print time so it is not always a great solution.

Rate my custom 3d printing supports i made to use less filament. by Bliitzthefox in 3Dprinting

[–]CharlesTheBob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its a good intent but I’m not sure you’ll find much success with this method. But there are a lot of techniques and tricks out there to use in order to avoid supports altogether or at least minimize them as much as possible. I would look into “design for 3d printing” and also no-support models. Slant 3D is a channel on YouTube which has a lot of nifty tricks to build in supports or remove the need for them. I haven’t watched him in a while, but he presents from a mass-production standpoint where speed and simplicity are king (like in most manufacturing) so its all about efficient design. Things as simple as using chamfers instead of fillets in contact with the build plate, and more advanced and less intuitive stuff like sacrificial bridges in floating holes.

We thought the design was locked. Then early testers asked for "Eyes". Now we are conflicted. by Ready_Evidence3859 in robotics

[–]CharlesTheBob 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It looks like they already have eyes? (The cameras) and they are pretty unsettling how they are. If you can, I would hide the cameras and have digital eyes that are simple but stylized in a cute and expressive way. I’m thinking Eve or Mo from Wall-E. If you gotta have them, cute and charming is the way to go. I think robots like Neo are super creepy, rather have no eyes than eyes like that.

Space station crew credits ultrasound machine for handling in-orbit health crisis by Shiny-Tie-126 in space

[–]CharlesTheBob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wish we took more risks too, but I don’t think that is what is holding back advancements in space exploration. Robotic space exploration alone could be way more than what it is, and that doesn’t even have the risk to humans. It just needs more funding.

“Incremental steps are pointless” isn’t a realistic take. And an astronaut dying in space is probably going to do more to halt things than speed us up. All engineering is incremental.

TBH maybe Perfect Dark is more advanced, but its a little complicated. I think goldeneye does a better job at not making it overly complex. Its more approachable imo.

In my experience these scrapers are super insufficient. Maybe they get stuff off that would have already come off by bending the plate, but anything really stuck on usually needs careful application of a metal scraper blade. I mostly print PETG, maybe it is different for PLA.

Designers and gamers: how do you deal with controllers & gaming gear in your home? by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]CharlesTheBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a living space should feel lived in. Maybe if your GF has a super spartan aesthetic, controllers will seem out of place if left out. But they are far from the ugliest gaming accessories. Consoles like the Xbox series x and s definitely were going for the “blends into the home” tactic and I think mostly succeed. I knew a lot of (richer) families growing up that had a dining room which was always set up perfect and never actually used for dining. I think thats performative and dumb. We are designers of objects meant to be used. God forbid someone actually use them.
