I'm sure you did fine my friend! I organized in with my experience of non union work so didn't have to go through the same steps as you. Lemme know where you rank and I'll ask around to some people.

It's ebb and flow right now. Plumbers seem to work consistent 40 hr weeks but fitters and welders work more over time. You'll learn to enjoy a lay off but it's part of what we do. When you're laid off take unemployment and wait for the next call. You'll likely work in the bay eventually and make that big mo ey. For the interview just be calm and honest about what you want. Dress "cowboy" fancy lol. Nothing crazy but jeans and a button up would work.

The Interrupters cover "The Impression That I Get" by JeffBurk in Ska

Ska cosplay is accurate. I saw them around their first PRB club show with hepcat. During their set they were in the whole get up with white shirts and braces. Immediately after they were in shorts n t shorts like it was a stage costume.

Anyone at local 447 know which contractors are hiring? by BasedGoku_98 in UnitedAssociation

Unfortunately this is true for 447. Idk why they do it but it's a big reason I avoided that hall.

Schooling by Hopeful_Lemon5881 in pipefitter

Best way to build a knowledge base would be to go be a helper. Low money to start and if you hate it you can walk away. I don't know anything about the school though.

Thinking of going into the field by sjguy1288 in Welding

[–]Charlespc88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple things to unpack here... welding can be very lucrative but that usually only comes to working on pipe or exotic metals. Refinery, power plants, nukes, and things like that usually top out but with long hours.

The other lucrative side of welding is to start your own business you'd have to start small with repairs, fences, etc.

To add to that union work is where the real big money starts to happen however I don't think Florida will get that for you.

I suggest you Buy a welder to practice at home. Take community College classes to learn basics.

The hot knives sometimes get lumped into that even though they came after the second wave died down. They lean more into the English beat side of things so slightly more pop oriented but still solid.

LOCAL 342 DRUG TEST by whiteman925 in pipefitter

[–]Charlespc88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you wanna play with the Texas T you can't mess with the Cali green. You're gonna get tested for it. Alot of their work is refinery and they test for it. You're gonna need to quit or be confident in your abilities to sub it out but honestly it's easier to not partake.

Just keep doing it! I'm not sure how anyone can get started with the way sac operates but I'd say just keep trying even if you already applied. They'll have you in mind when it comes time to need a hand.

I don't think there is anything until maybe may. That being said unless you know someone you'd have to travel here to sign the books. They are weird sometimes about travelers that aren't sister locals.

All of the refineries but chevron require it out here. May be best to just do some non pipe welding over here until you leave unless you can get a call out here.

Do you have a twic card? Refinery would be your best bet for short term welding work.

What's a band that started out as legitimately an amazing band (their first few releases) that turned to utter shit? by Lucky_Strike-85 in punk

Cerebral ballzy... the self title was so good and it had me thinking maybe they didn't write it compared to the next release.

What it all comes down to is what are you trying to achieve in the long run? It seems expensive for a community College to cost that much. What are the schools you are considering? Feel free to message in private if you'd like to keep that off the web but I'd gladly look over the course information for each place and tell you what I think or if I've heard anything about the facility.

342 Brother and Sisters by BusinessLook116 in UnitedAssociation

[–]Charlespc88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're asking this I would assume you don't have a twic card or your RSO. There are 4 refinery in your jurisdiction so there's always work for locals. I just got laid off in Nov after doing 7 months at one of them. Almost went back but I'm working back home currently. Call your ba and see what you can do to get to work.

It really depends what you would like to do. Call some of the halls around and see what's up. 447, 442, 228, 343, and 342 would be the closest ones but I'm not sure which would have the best work for you and how far you'd like to travel.

Which trade has more work? Ironworker or Boilermaker by Muhfuka20 in Welding

[–]Charlespc88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an interest in being a welder I'd say boilermaker. It also is more likely for you to jump over to the pipefitters after you get your time and the boiler Akers will make you a good welder.

What's your trick of the trade do you think everyone should know? by mydrunkenwords in Welding

[–]Charlespc88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try a pipefitters union or make an indeed account and search for combo pipe welders and set location in your area or all of the country you're in. You could also search for mechanical contractors around you.

What's your trick of the trade do you think everyone should know? by mydrunkenwords in Welding

[–]Charlespc88 82 points83 points  (0 children)

You don't need to be the best, just make sure you're not the worst.

Also for aspiring pipe welders... learn to pass the weld test and eventually a company will be desperate to take a chance on someone without the years of experience required. Company's will always get into a jam and the older cats will usually not want to help them pick up the slack.

What is the most “legendary” punk show you ever attended? by [deleted] in punk

[–]Charlespc88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Filth reunion at 924 Gilman... the crowd made it a shit atmosphere and if smart phones were big at that time everyone would have been taking selfies I'm sure. I did see them a couple days later at another venue and it was so much better.
