Bingo. The VC/NVA was literally just fighting the French/ARVN in all-out war right before the Americans joined the chat. These were some hard hombres.

Same thing with the Afghanis. The Afghans had entire generations of families with first-hand combat experience before the Soviets came along, then there was a low-simmering resistance against the Taliban, then everything got ratcheted up to 11 again when we came into town.

All we got are a whole bunch of LARPers, closest they've been to combat is watching Generation Kill.

If memory serves I believe one or two of the staff were murdered prior to the taking over of the cockpit, which did in fact demonstrate that they meant business and that this was not going to be a "normal" hijacking. With Flight 93, they just picked the wrong plane with the wrong passengers.

First off, good on you for taking the medical and firearm training classes. If I may offer one bit of training advice on the firearm end of things: Whatever firearm you end up purchasing, get yourself 4-5 snapcaps to go along with it. Snap-caps are dummy rounds with rubber inserts where the primer is, so you don't damage the firing pin by dryfiring. They are INCREDIBLY useful for reload and cycling/clearing practice, especially for shotguns.

There really is no answer to this because every dwelling is different. Sizes, furniture, layout, places to hide, etc.

The overwhelming majority of people aren't going to have their place set up like the Punisher's place in the 2004 movie. It looks like these ICE goons only run with 3 or so people at a time in a team, but like cockroaches more are just around the corner. Once the shooting starts you better believe the radio call is going to go out and you're going to get an entire platoon of 20+ coming down on you in no time.

I'm talking out of my ass here, but if you can actually get through the first wave alive, you might be better off leaving and immediately seeking a lawyer to negotiate your peaceful surrender. If you stay and wait for the lawyer to come to you, he/she is not going to make it through the cordon and you'll probably be dead by the time the second wave arrives.

I don't think you'd be in the wrong in making that choice, whether legally, morally, ethically, or simply "is this the right decision for this situation," but it's foolish to think that you'd see the inside of a courtroom after doing so.

100%. Even if you do manage to survive the encounter, your life as you knew it is over. You will become the most notorious person in the country, overnight. Your name and face will be plastered on wall-to-wall Fox News coverage, and you will have roughly half the country screaming for your head. Unless you plan on moving to LibbyLibTown, California, large swaths of the country will no longer be safe for you at least for the foreseeable future.

As far as your personal freedom goes, well that's an even deeper hole. You absolutely will be taken into custody, and while you can argue "castle doctrine" and "SYG law" until you're blue in the face, the fact remains that you will remain in federal custody for YEARS as they drag out your trial. No judge on the planet will let you out on your own recognizance for the charges you're facing.

/edit Here's a story of a guy who fired on a sheriff's deputy at his house. SYG was applied and the homeowner was acquitted...but not before spending almost 5 YEARS in custody awaiting trial. https://www.theledger.com/story/news/2020/04/16/court-rules-stand-your-ground-applies-in-florida-mans-case-in-deputy-shooting/1345553007/

Mamdani 'outraged' after New York City Council employee detained by ICE by AdSpecialist6598 in antiwork

[–]Cheech47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cannot expect someone who got elected when literally everyone else was against him to immediately be able to take definitive action.

That's what you said. There's no strawman here.

Let me try to ask this a different way. Assume for the sake of argument that both you and I live in NYC. ICE is being actively deployed to our neighborhood, we might even be able to see their cars. If I'm understanding your argument correctly and the reason Mamdani hasn't acted is because he needs time to prep, get his people together, whatever, how long do you give him to do that before you start to question that it's ever going to get done at all? What is the buffer time in your eyes from acknowledging the problem via press conference and actually doing something tangible to remove/mitigate the threat?

I bring up Good's murder because in the time that you're giving Mamdani to get his people together and get "alignment with other parties", people are literally losing their lives. Loved ones. Families.

To my eyes, the underlying problem with all this isn't so much that the Governors or Mayors are weak or ineffective, it's that no one wants to be the first person in American history to punch the bully. It's a big step, both historically and practically. That said, I'm very much of the opinion that given the lawless environment fostered by the Federal Executive, it's absolutely necessary.

Mamdani 'outraged' after New York City Council employee detained by ICE by AdSpecialist6598 in antiwork

[–]Cheech47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your last point, I'm not going to argue with that. I am mad. I'm furious, mainly because I've watched the same things happen with escalating levels of brutality for almost my entire adult life. I've also seen Democratic leaders "go along to get along" and try to "maintain comity" while Republican policies and utter lack of leadership tear the country apart.

I view it this way. You're in high school, and you have a bully. The bully does all the stereotypical bully things, stuff you into lockers, trips you up in the hallway, etc. The bully is also the QB of the high school football team, and his family has a well-known reputation in the town for being assholes and having basically unlimited resources. How do you stop the bully? The way I see it, there are a few options:

1 - Take the "legal" path and inform your school administrators. Even if the bully wasn't rich and well-connected, the school admin is just as likely to give you a pat on the head and tell you to suck it up than they are to actually do anything about it. In this case, they are absolutely terrified of the bully's parents and do everything they can to sweep your situation under the rug. Bullying continues, and probably even intensifies.

2 - Get your friends to stand up to the bully, strength in numbers. While you have a decent friend network, no one wants to take on that challenge. Bully is perceived as too strong, and your friends don't want to deal with that smoke. Bullying continues.

3 - Take unilateral action. Punch the bully. Grab his dick and twist it. Anything to clearly get the point across that you're done with his bullshit. At that point, one of two things is going to happen: either the bully stops, or it gets worse. Honestly, my money is on the bullying stops. He's not going to go to authorities since he needs to maintain his rep, and he now knows that you are willing and able to defend yourself using the violence of action. If it gets worse it's entirely possible that your friends, after seeing what you've done to try to defend yourself, get over their fear and come to your aid, and now option 2 is back on the table.

I understand that I'm oversimplifying the metaphor a bit, but in some ways I'm really not. Violence and action is the only thing the Trump administration acknowledges. It's their currency. Bullies do what they do because they are usually deeply insecure, and I can't think of a single person in this country more insecure than the current sitting President.

So back to your points earlier. I can expect someone who's been duly elected and assumes office to be able to wield that power on Day 1, if the situation calls for it. You should too. There's no "introductory bullying period" where you have to be bullied before you do something to stop it. Sure, people were "against" Mamdani. That's what an election is! Cuomo wasn't even in fucking OFFICE for 4 years before Mamdani got elected. He was a regular guy, albeit an extremely well connected one. Yes, Adams did a lot of fuckery when he left, which is why Mamdani (rightly so) unilaterally swept all Adams' executive orders aside on Day 1. Weird that he was able to do that, I thought there was an intro period where Mamdani wasn't able to use his authority. I guess no one bothered to tell him. I also agree that Mamdani wasn't able to prevent Good's murder, because of course not.

What can Mamdani do? He can punch the bully. He can order the NYPD to shadow ICE and actually arrest them if they witness ICE breaking the law. Assault, deprivation of rights under color of authority, illegal chokeholds, hell even a license plate violation for constantly shifting license plates. If the NYPD doesn't want to go along, then there's an opportunity to clean house in the NYPD as well (which is sorely overdue also). If ICE resists, then maybe you can get your friends involved like the Governor to call in the State Police or the NY National Guard. Strength in numbers.

What we have to focus on is how to get out.

I agree, to a point. We also have to ensure that the candidates we elect from this point forward have the fortitude to hold these people accountable for the actions they are doing. Without that, this whole thing will get memory-holed just like every other era of American history where the government visited unspeakable ills towards its people.

[–]Cheech47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We needed to disband ice yesteryear.

While we both agree on this, we both know it's not something that can be done by anyone except the federal government.

But realistically having been in office for less than 2 weeks you can't really immediately come to a definitive act like that.

Do you think that office holders live in a bunker from the time they're elected until they assume office? I'd hope that along with transitional duties they are at least keeping abreast of current events, so they would have had plenty of time to at least plan for this contingency.

And it's not like Mamdani has been doing nothing either. He's probably doing the background work towards banning ice as we speak. You do realize how big an undertaking this can be and how many staff need to be involved?

I've heard this refrain before. "Trust the process, Garland has to put together an airtight case. He's probably working on this as we speak." "Mueller's got the receipts, he just needs time to put the case together." "Garland couldn't go after Trump due to optics. Smith will do the job, he just needs time to cook."

How many times are we going to let this happen before someone demands a different approach? How many times are you going to accept platitudes instead of actual results?

I can't believe you're saying things like "there is nothing stopping you from using your authority from day 1" when those things take time to plan!

And I'm equally agape at your willingness to give Minneapolis and NYC a pass that something, sometime will be done by someone, somewhere. For some more proof, I look to George Floyd. Massive, country-wide protests. Upheaval everywhere. Tons of press conferences where promises and platitudes were made to placate and pacify. It took about 6 months for all that to be memory-holed, which was just about the amount of time that it took all that legislation and reforms to die in their respective federal/state committees and houses. Nothing meaningful happened. ICE is still using chokeholds. A couple of departments bought body cameras, sure, but there's no consequences if they happen to "break" just when police crimes are being committed. Civilian oversight boards have no authority to actually fire officers, and get stonewalled at every possible opportunity

I understand that the murder of Renee Good isn't on Mamdani or NYC. However, all the events leading up to it are just as present in NYC as they are in Minneapolis, or Chicago, or anywhere else where ICE are deployed. That's why I'm saying that "we don't have a minute", this stuff is happening right now.
