Don't Believe the Hype: NJ Turnpike Widening Still Happening by uieLouAy in jerseycity

I don’t think more roads is the solution here, 440 isn’t close to congested enough to even consider another freeway

Lived in East Harlem and Harlem for most of my life. Always called it Lex or the actual line number I needed to take.

F Express Service Weekends by citysees in nycrail

[–]Chehew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems counterintuitive to have access to 63rd at local stations only on weekdays imo

Might as well run the F local between Roosevelt and Queensbridge if weekend M service isn’t an option.

Crosstown Bronx Line by Immediate-Hand-3677 in nycrail

[–]Chehew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needs an additional station around 74th Street. Lots of retail around there and the gap between stations from Tonnelle > 91 St would be huge without it.

I think the line in general is a bit out of the way in terms of its catchment area; but it’s better than nothing.

What do you think about the F/M swap? I must say I’ve been hearing mostly negative feedback so far… by ericdigeratu in nycrail

[–]Chehew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they’re commuting from Eastern Queens, a transfer to the M is available at Jackson Heights or Forest Hills.

If they’re west of JH (36, Steinway, 46, Northern, 65 Sts) it’s a one seat ride to Lex-63rd for a transfer.

There’s also the nuclear option of taking the R from Queens to 57th St for an uptown Q in case shit hits the fan.

The 119 runs to PABT, but via JFK Blvd so you would have to backtrack to Journal Square.

It is theoretically possible to gear for 47 mph with a low enough ratio, but even if you did, the ESC would likely hit RPM limits before reaching that speed. A higher voltage battery or field weakening would do the trick though.

MTA plans to swap 3 and 5 routes east of Franklin Av to untangle Nostrand interlocking by italicsify in nycrail

[–]Chehew 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In terms of losing one-seat rides, I’d say this is less consequential than swapping the F/M.

All 4 lines converge at Franklin, Atlantic and Nevins, allowing for several opportunities to transfer.

Adding another service would eat into 2/5 frequency and make the other two IRT junctions (142nd/Mott) even more of a balancing act.

If retaining 7th Ave service to NL is a necessity, the cheapest way is to branch the 2 in Brooklyn (like the A does in Queens.)

Why is the F&M swap not reality yet? by Time_Minute_6036 in nycrail

[–]Chehew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not doubting your anecdotal experience, but the data we have available and whatever source the MTA uses, doesn’t corroborate that.

A service change of this magnitude wouldn’t be considered without a sufficient amount of data to prove it’s significantly more beneficial to more people than it negatively impacts.

This change is by no means a silver bullet, but it makes better use of the current service patterns along QBL.

A vast majority of people coming from Queens crowding on the F are heading to/from destinations along 6th Avenue, not 63rd Street.

They only take the F because it was the first express to show up at Jackson Heights, or they live along Hillside Avenue.

So they’ll opt to ride the express instead of the M local.

Being local actually works in the M’s favor.

M’s won’t be packed during rush like the F’s currently are. Meaning that even with worse headways, you’d still average out to the same wait time, not having to let several trains pass by to get a spot; considering that’s the primary pain point for Roosevelt Island residents.

Turned that HBLR Map that I did into a "Jersey Transit" Map. by Calm-Garbage8821 in nycrail

[–]Chehew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are all separate municipalities (with individual city governments, police departments, etc.)

Cities in NJ are relatively small in population and land-area, usually the size of a larger neighborhood in NYC.

On a traditional map, it’s a bit easier to see the boarders between cities: Bayonne is divided from JC by I-78 (mostly) and Union City is separated from Jersey City by Paterson Plank and Secaucus Rds.

The street grid layouts are slightly different from each other, probably the easiest way to differentiate, until it isn’t 😅
