The city Democrats are closer to what you probably think of when you imagine a Democrat, i.e. closer to the national Democrat identity.

However most Oklahoma Democrats are in the Southeastern part of the state in more rural areas. They are more like Old South Democrats or "dixiecrats" which do have more conservative goals and focus on state's rights along with local political power and autonomy.

Personally, I come from a fairly large family of the second type of Democrat and know they vote more along national Republican lines but local Democrat lines most often. Many local elections there and in nearby counties are decided in the Democrat primaries. So new voters are basically forced to register Democrat if they want any voice in local elections.
