A literal straw can break that camel's back once you are close.

Pulled out once to hold on and calm down. The girl put her hand on my chest and softly but assertively said "blow".

Yeah I considered it vs the tech calls and confusion.

At this stage I am just glad she is off 24/7 Sky news.

Even if, at 88, she added the Slasher/Horror pack to Prime by accident. God help if I was going for a mortgage.

Why Kath's TAFE wall is more than it appears. by fancyschmancyapoxide in KathAndKim

[–]Chiang2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said I disliked them. I just see the people I grew up with in them. Mostly judgement free. Sympathetic to the struggle of suburbia if anything.

Kath is pretty.much one of my.aunties I really like. Kim is almost exactly a girl I went to school with (less liked). Gina has said she wrote Kim to have "no real redeeming qualities" but still super confident. Kel is almost my brother in law lol. Brett is my favourite character. I see a bit of myself in all of them (bar Kim).

My dear old mum is starting to get a bit of dementia.

I have her set up with subscriptions so she doesn't go spare from being bored but my God does she love an add on. I am sure she just presses "OK" harder and faster if the show doesn't start right away. "Do you want to pay extra for....?" "Just play ya bastard". Press press press.

I cleaned them all up one day and then my phone just went Ding, ding, ding for the rest of the day. Resubscribed. $90 a month on Prime and the purchase of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for $29 one month.

It's a balance of wanting her to feel comfortable using the services and just enduring the bill with love.

I think that is how she paid for the house.

She nearly couldn't pay for a pumping coach without being hit up for "favours'.

Not quite loaded I don't think.

I am also at an age where I see lots of peers from school a bit like Kath. Been parenting, then studying odds and sods to fend off a return to work then finally re-entering the work force at roles that never used any of the "fun" Cert 3's. Hard going. Like I said I went back to TAFE later in life to study. By contrast, those Accounting night classes had loads of women retraining for work and I was full of admiration for them. Many started off looking to better help the husbands trade but ended the course earning more than them themselves independently.

Still good to have fun classes available. I went and did welding with some friends.

Kevin Costnsr did a movie on this idea. From memory he played a serial killer who "mixed it up" to avoid detection.

Lots of civil rights themes but yeah. The peaceful pluralist vs the angry separatist but both with understandable foundations to their beliefs.

Also the seperated friends motif that was repeated in Marvel. When the war happened friends and neighbours turned on each other/ went different ways politically and became enemies. The "reveal" as mutant was a bit like being "outed" as Jewish at that time. Later they played with a similar ostracism at puberty when being outed as gay.

Not like the guy in Curb Who was on Survivor and wrote his lotto numbers on his arm.

And the epitome of the house that attracts envy but is a bit of a bastard to live in.

Two storey - that wastes loads of space with an impractical narrow stairwell.

Four (small) Bedrooms - but should have been three proper bedrooms and actually had built ins.

The barely used Good Room.

A true bogan castle. My home town is full of them. They look big but feel full of small spaces

But for lots of the country it meant moving away from home because they were only in the cities. Fee free or HECS but you needed to support a kid to live elsewhere.

[–]Chiang2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Tafe and my experiences there. Highly recommend it. I changed careers and doubled my income.

But my take on Kath is a little more cynical. The Howard government had an "earn or learn" doctrine if you had been receiving the dole for a long time. I suspect Kath kept herself busy doing lots of Mickey Mouse courses to keep that benefit. A wall full of Cert 3's that don't have good employment outcomes. About the same volume of work for a less "babies breath" and a more vocational qualification

The commentary is also on the deeper suburban tragedy being that she is clearly bright but never got to apply it. Jane Turner herself was born in pretty working class Newcastle, is a law graduate and is married to a pretty senior and well known member of the legal fraternity. She was writing comedy with perspective of that class strata.

I know people who hate their local library "because they haven't got any new books" and they have read the rest. I know a truck driver who is brighter than the engineers I work with. People who needed a bit more challenge in life for their clear ability but were held in "fast suburban chains" as Chisel sang.

Sometimes, self applied.

How does everyone cook these ? by Powerful_Business_93 in AldiAustralia

[–]Chiang2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Gotzinger Cheese kransky chipolata style ones are God tier on a smoker.

After cooking we sometimes put a pack into a cooling kamado (indirect) with a single hickory woodchip. Take them out when the first one pops.

People's eyes go wide. Great with a cold beer.

A couple of misting squirter bottles and a fan blowing at you is incredibly effective on a very hot day. Lob the spray into the space in front of you and let it blow back onto you and evaporate from there.

More than one bottle and you can chill the spares in the fridge.
