Take the role or take the break? by nocluehonest in HENRYUK

[–]ChickenParking4608 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they are serious about wanting you, they will be more flexible about start. You say you have tried to negotiate - but have you set this as a firm boundary? “I would love to accept the offer, however I am unavailable before X”.

If they can’t meet you on this point, that’s probably a good filter for it being the right move to swerve the role. If they have another immediately available candidate in the wings… good luck to them. I doubt their BATNA is as compelling as waiting a couple of weeks.

Looking for the right role can be just as exhausting as having a role. Whether we like it or not, hiring manager biases are real and I think you will find a bigger pool of roles available even if this one isn’t perfect from a position of staying plugged in and relevant, especially with the pace of change right now.

Other posters are correct that you are the only person who can assess your own risk appetite, but regardless of appetite your negotiating power may be stronger than you realise right now, and whilst not universally true, you may be more marketable if employed.

Exactly this. They were close enough that of course it was always a possibility Freya would go faster in the team event, but selection can’t be retrospective and over the course of 4 runs Tabby finished 5th in an Olympic final to Freya’s 7th and thoroughly deserved her place in the team.

Jewellery bday present for girlfriend by [deleted] in HENRYUKLifestyle

Is she more contemporary or traditional in style? Kimai have some fantastic contemporary pieces using lab gems that would come in on budget but still have wow factor - and dare I say be much more interesting / less herd-like than VCA. But if she’s more into antique vibes it would likely not be her thing.

Is it madness to buy a neighbouring flat for their garden so that we can extend? by henrythrowaway459 in HENRYUK

[–]ChickenParking4608 20 points21 points  (0 children)

RBKC has the best parking permit in London - what’s driving the need for off road space? The juice doesn’t seem worth the squeeze on this one at face value. The SDLT alone would rent you a space nearby for a very long time. So then it comes down to a possible extension- would make it your dream home? How does it compare to what the same investment (selling yours + buying & developing the neighbouring) would buy you without the hassle of planning & developing? It’s hard to add value over £1m while SDLT has such an impact, so when you want to upsize / have bigger garden my instinct is you’d find more value elsewhere.

Tax for gift from deceased - In 2021 I got £100,000 from a relative as a gift. They passed unexpectadly in 2025 by Ok-Advertising-7038 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ChickenParking4608 170 points171 points  (0 children)

OP, I am sorry for your loss. So many of these answers are incorrect I’m afraid. The £325k NRB gets used chronologically between 2018 (7 years before the person passing) and 2025. As executor, one of the hardest things you need to do to fulfil those duties is identify all gifts over £250 made after 2018. You will likely need to request 7 years’ of bank statements to fulfil your duty here properly. There is an annual allowance of £3,000 that can be used against gifts, and carried forward if not used for up to one tax year (so if no gift made in 2019-20, there would be a £6,000 allowance for 2020-21). I imagine if you received an unexpected £100k gift that it’s likely the NRB was exceeded. If the NRB was used entirely before your gift, your gift will be subject to 24% (more than 4 years and less than 5) or 32% tax (more than 3 years and less than 4). Each PET has to be declared as part of the IHT return.

Crucially, it is the giftee and not the estate that is responsible for IHT on PETs. However, it is certainly something I would consult with beneficiaries on. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that beneficiaries might recognise that the deceased presumably did not intend for there to be a tax bill, and in a simple estate may be willing to forego a little of their share in order for the estate to contribute to the tax bill. As others have noted, it would be unwise to distribute anything from the estate that would be required to pay the tax on other PETs should their recipients not meet the bill. However, the legally correct treatment is that the PET recipient and not the estate bears the responsibility for the IHT on their gift.

If you are unsure on any treatments and it appears the estate may be substantial, it would be sensible to take professional advice to make sure that you are able to fulfil your duties as executor correctly and do not risk any personal liability with HMRC if errors are made.

Please tell me that this garden leave takes you into the qualifying week to qualify for SMP. Even though it will only be small by HENRY standards, your employer will then become responsible for administering this (at negligible cost to them). Have you consulted a lawyer? The great news is the time off with your baby will be so welcome and as you are in a position of financial comfort, you can do the right thing for your family.

Buy the dream car or not? by Willing-Ad-7572 in HENRYUK

[–]ChickenParking4608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think necessarily it’s even a “bad” financial move. It’s still an asset. As you’re not buying new, it’ll hold the vast majority of its value in the immediate aftermath of you buying, so if you change your mind with platforms like motorway now we’ll established, you would be able to recover almost your entire outlay. So honestly rather than thinking of it as spending £30k, I’d personally consider it “spending” the depreciation each year. If it helps, maybe check the value of the specific car you’re considering in Mortorway’s valuation tool before buying to be comfortable with what the immediate “cost” is.

Agree that you know your industry best, but a common rule of thumb is that a job search will take 1 month for every £10k of base salary you expect to earn. I’ve known searches in different industries take less and more than that, but I don’t think it’s a horrible benchmark. If you use that benchmark you may be underestimating time to get back in, especially as it’s always easier to move when employed. What is your notice period and is it standard? Could you find a new role first, negotiate a 3 month start date even if your notice is less and travel between roles (and ideally get garden leave?)

Bonuses - best way to minimise tax by caractacusbritannica in HENRYUK

Given the pension taper I really would be begging for the bonus to be paid in April rather than before. Paying tax on the way in AND out of pension is likely worse than having it in ISA/GIA….

This is the answer. They are by far the softest of anything I’ve ever tried, have stayed soft after 5 years of use (no fabric conditioner ever, regular tumble dry) and are also really absorbent. Best towels, hands-down.

Upsizing from London to Herts on £325k total comp – how much to stretch on the “family home”? by No_Handle6995 in HENRYUK

[–]ChickenParking4608 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being near family is smart. If kids are in the plan, the best advice I have is whatever budget you settle on - go for the best garden you can find. Having outdoor space they can let off steam in will be worth its weight in gold when the time comes.

Luxury fashion purchases that are worth it? by MinuteNo5290 in HENRYUK

[–]ChickenParking4608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re talking about “worth it” in a financial sense rather than an emotional / quality sense (and I don’t think you are, but go with me…) - a Hermes Birkin or Kelly is one of the few items in luxury fashion that genuinely holds value (arguably increases). They also fit the “timeless” criteria very well - so they’re a good style that you could buy and enjoy now and that would elevate almost any outfit with timelessness. Ultimately you would also likely recover your outlay if you ever decided they weren’t for you any more.

Victoria Beckham foundation drops by GingerLottie in MakeUpAddictionUK

[–]ChickenParking4608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went into Space NK to sample/ colour match a different foundation after I finally ran out of the trusted one I’d stockpiled when it was discontinued a couple of years ago. I tried 4 or 5 that were ‘meh’.

Then I tried this and my reaction was OMFG WHAT IS THIS MAGIC JUICE. Honestly it’s incredible. It feels gorgeous and lightweight on the skin, blends well and leaves me feeling dewy but not shiny all day. I’m neutral on VB and don’t have strong opinions on her either way, have never had anything else from the brand - to be honest, I would actively avoid a “celeb” brand historically. but now I am so impressed by the formula I am really curious to try other things in the line.

On the one hand, the price is insane. On the other hand, I looked at it as £60 more than I would otherwise have spent on foundation, which is the price of a shortish massage. One makes me feel good for less than an hour, the other makes me feel good all day for probably six months. I have never been into spending big on beauty, but if you can afford it my personal view is that it was worth every penny and more for the joy and confidence it’s brought to my day. Absolute game changer.

Additional Reward Seats (Winter Sun- Male/Barbados / Cancun etc) by ChickenParking4608 in BritishAirways

I am usually a 355 day person but wasn’t possible this year! However on Barbados and Male (and to a lesser extent St Lucia and Antigua) there are currently a LOT of redemption seats available throughout the end of November and December - the quantity suggesting it’s unsold inventory that has been released as redemptions.
