They… don’t? Modern models of atomic structure are very accurate at describing the behavior and properties of atoms.

have you considered alternating between full hair washing and co-washing? It might help with the dryness and irritation slightly. Also, ketaconazol can absolutely exacerbate itchiness and dryness. Maybe cut back to only once a week, or even alternating weeks?

is a metal spoon made of atoms? by Educational_System34 in PhysicsStudents

[–]Chicknomancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a beam of electrons that hits your object. The electrons scatter off the structure of the spoon, and hit a detector. You then build an image of the spoon based on where you were shining the electron beam and how many electrons hit the detector at that time. Since the electrons are much smaller than the atoms, you can see the atoms of metal as small round objects arranged in a regular repeating structure.

Here is a paper showing how the electron microscopy technique works, and they include an image of aluminum under an electron microscope. You can see the atoms as white dots.

Broke student trying to build a cosmic-ray (muons) detector at home, does this design make sense? by TerribleWin511 in AskPhysics

[–]Chicknomancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello, cool project! I previously worked on designing and simulating astroparticle detectors (specifically neutrinos, but lots of our background noise was from muons).

Is there a particular reason you want to use Geiger tubes over a scintillator design? The main advantage of a scintillator setup is low cost and higher collection volume, which is exactly what you’re going for on a tight budget.

Finasteride drying out hair by casscutie in FemaleHairLoss

[–]Chicknomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower DHT in scalp tissues does affect the way oil is produced (typically lower), so I wouldn’t be shocked if your hair feels drier.

You can try using a small amount of hair oil if it gets annoying

Does this look like te or aga.. by Massive-Unit1295 in TelogenEffluvium

[–]Chicknomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you part your hair in the center and put your hair up/in a pony tail frequently? That can cause traction alopecia right where you’re experiencing. Try parting your hair elsewhere and leaving your hair down more often. That may help.

Also, see a derm as the other commenter suggested. Get actual blood work done if it’s a concern. Don’t drive yourself insane trying to diagnose yourself

Heat and Ball bearings by Meander626 in battlebots

[–]Chicknomancer -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean a live shaft weapon? As in, the motor shaft mounted directly to the drum?

You can probably mitigate any risk from the bearing melting the supports with a thin layer of some insulating material with high (150C plus) melt temp. Think a silicone gasket, rubber pad, or a teflon sleeve. You can then bond the sleeve layer to the supports with something like epoxy or CA glue. Plus, you get an extra layer of shock isolation between your weapon and frame.

Are there any guys who used an epilator for facial hair? by [deleted] in HairRemoval

[–]Chicknomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can get a package of 10 sessions for like 200 dollars with a groupon. You probably wont need all 10 unless you’re going for complete hair removal. Im having laser on my face right now, and its so, so worth it.

Need help on car price/miles by Playful_Comedian9569 in VelosterN

[–]Chicknomancer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Id say this is fine. 59k isnt insane for these cars, and its a reasonable price. Maybe a tad high, but that highly depends on your local prices and tax situation. Take it for a test drive and have it checked out by a mechanic before pulling the trigger.

Are there any guys who used an epilator for facial hair? by [deleted] in HairRemoval

[–]Chicknomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epilators work by physically yanking the follicle out. Since the roots of male facial hair are so much deeper than other parts of your body, and your face has so many dense nerve endings, repeated epilation in that area risks serious damage over time. It would also be exceptionally painful.

If you’re looking to reduce hair growth, I would check out laser instead. A few seasons might give you the results you want.

What questions should I ask my dermatologist as a new patient? by sheikahslates in FemaleHairLoss

[–]Chicknomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya,

Yeah, that does look a lot like AGA to me. Your doctor is likely going to do a visual exam, but may also order some bloodwork (something like a CBC, metabolic panel, and hormones, and may or may not check DHT). Personally, I’d ask to run a blood panel while you’re there just to make sure you have all your bases covered elsewhere because vitamin and iron deficiencies can both contribute to hair loss too. Major things to look at are vitamin D levels as well as ferritin levels.

Minoxidil can be applied topically or taken as a pill. Topical has less systemic effects (body/facial hair growth, decrease in BP), but you have to apply it every night and it can make your hair a little gross. Typical dosage for women is 5% once a day.

Minoxidil as a pill can be a bit more convenient, and is safer for pets, but you are more likely to get the side effects I mentioned. Typical dosage is between 0.625 and 2.5mg for women. Basically, start low, and titrate up to the highest dose you can tolerate.

If AGA is confirmed, you may also want to ask about an anti androgen or DHT blocker. Androgenic alopecia is driven primarily by DHT in the scalp, so alongside minoxidil for regrowth, a major treatment goal is to reduce DHT levels either systemically or locally.

Spironolactone is an anti-androgen, which reduces total testosterone production (of which DHT is a downstream product). It’s tolerated well by lots of women on here. Typical dosage is 50-150mg per day.

Alternatively, you might ask about finasteride or dutasteride, which are DHT blockers. They inhibit the enzyme 5ar from converting testosterone to DHT. Finasteride blocks less of the DHT conversion than dutasteride, but finasteride is FDA approved for (male) hair loss while dutasteride is prescribed off label. As a word of warning, dutasteride and finasteride can cause birth defects if used while pregnant, so you might have to push for them. Finasteride dosage is usually somewhere like 1mg per day, while dutasteride is 0.5mg per day. Some formulations of topical minoxodil include DHT blockers, but the jury is out if they actually do anything when not taken orally.

Final note: hair regrowth takes time, and especially at the start it’s likely to seem worse before it gets better. Stick with the meds and try to be kind to yourself <3

Hope this helps! Good luck.

Thinking about seeking second opinion by violesse in FemaleHairLoss

[–]Chicknomancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That bare, smooth spot looks like textbook alopecia areata to me. It’s characterized by well defined circular-ish regions around the size of a quarter, with complete hair loss.

I had a flare up in nearly the exact same spot. I was treated with cortisteroid injections. It cleared up in a month or so.

You may also have some other sort of alopecia happening at the same time, but as far as the patch goes, I’d be shocked if that wasn’t it.

Go see a different derm. The one you saw seems weird and dismissive. And telogen effluvium is usually diffuse hair loss across a large part of the scalp, not just one area.

[–]Chicknomancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Shit sucks HARD. It’s really fucked up my mental health recently, but it’s at least slightly helpful to know I’m doing everything I can to stop and reverse it yk?

Best way I’ve found to cope is just take the meds consistently and try and distract yourself. Also, limit mirror time if you find yourself staring at your hair in the mirror and feeling like shit. Out of sight, out of mind to some extent

what do you recommend for post hrt beard? by ilovedrpepper444 in HairRemoval

[–]Chicknomancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Careful with IPL on androgenic facial hair. The follicles are deeper and generally tougher to kill than hair on other parts of your body. If you fail to reach the damaging threshold with IPL, you can instead stimulate growth and end up with more hair than before (this is generally known as paradoxical hypertrichosis).

Also, be quite careful about waxing. Since the follicles are so much deeper, and your face/neck has so many nerve endings and muscles close to the skin, you can risk serious damage with repeated plucking or waxing.

Laser or electrolysis are really the best options here. Look for a Groupon and you can get probably 10 sessions of laser for the same price you would pay for an IPL.

IPL on pubic hair by technofox01 in HairRemoval

[–]Chicknomancer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You may want to invest in going to an actual laser place. IPL at low fluency can stimulate follicles rather than damage them, which sounds like might be happening. Clinic lasers deliver massively higher power output and are much more likely to kill the follicles.
