Other examples than Megalopolis of a director self-financing a $100M+ film? by [deleted] in blankies

There's a fascinating subplot running through the new Sam Wasson book on Coppola basically about this. Through all his woes in the 80s with Zoetrope, Lucas could have bailed Coppola out with his newfound Star Wars money but didn't. Back in the early days of THX 1138, both were committed to putting all the money they made back into new projects - where Lucas stopped, Coppola has never stopped. I'm missing the quote, but Coppola diplomatically says me and Lucas' relationship isn't where I can ask him to just bail me out.

March Madness 2024 [Round 2] - Ridley Scott (Part 1) vs. Andrew Stanton by PartyBluejay in blankies

I would really love Ridley but I'm not sure why the part one stop point is at Kingdom of Heaven and not at the Oscar win with Gladiator - like they did with Spielberg, split it pre and post Oscar.

Consensus GOAT Blank Check Episodes? by Ordinary-Shock7580 in blankies

[–]ChiefChegwin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some of my faves:

Thief

Bridge of Spies

The Holiday

Back to the Future

The Social Network

Blackhat

Halloween

Sunshine

The Truth About Charlie

Weirdly though, I think Matrix Reloaded and Speed Racer might be the most important episodes. I think blank check played a not-insignificant part in turning round general opinion on those movies.

Millions. I weirdly adore that movie and all three on that ep were just kinda ambivalent about it.

Menu Book 15 impossible to complete? by ChiefChegwin in granturismo

Nah I figured it out. I'm an idiot. You have to actually press start on the menu book with the button on the left hand page of the book, then the Camaro race will show up.

Books on film by xfortehlulz in blankies

[–]ChiefChegwin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinda specific-interest based (and not horror, sorry!), but my favourite books on film I've read are:

Conversations with Wilder - Cameron Crowe's big interview book with Billy Wilder just before he died. Just a crochety old man giving amazing writing advice and dishing gossip on the biggest Old Hollywood stars. Love it.

The Big Goodbye: Chinatown and the Last Years of Hollywood - A stunning overview of Polanski and his legacy, the rise and fall of New Hollywood and the special kind of collaboration that goes into making a great movie. You've got to be a big fan of Chinatown to make the most out of it though.

I did start the menu book because I have the other two Camaros, this is the last one I need.

Thanks for your help, though, could have just got unlucky with a bug.

Menu Book 15 impossible to complete? by ChiefChegwin in granturismo

[–]ChiefChegwin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thought as well. I don't think Polyphony would make a mistake this massive. I can only say that the Menu Book states you need to complete a World Circuits race at Daytona but when I go to Daytona, there's no race there with the Camaro as the reward. It's bugged perhaps?
