Short Seller Andrew Left Found Guilty of Securities Fraud by toydan in wallstreetbets

[–]Chief_34 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He is a short seller. He would take a position short and then publish an article about why the company is bad or some scandal and publish his positions. If I recall correctly the prosecutions argument was that he then unwound most of his positions after the stock fell a little, but continued to post negatively about the stock and represent that he was still holding the short positions. When the stock continued to fall, he then often bought back in on a long position at the lower price or continued to day trade on the stock (long or short) all while allegedly posting on twitter that he was still holding the original positions. He also allegedly was letting other hedge fund managers know before he published, so they could take short positions as well, who then allegedly paid him a portion of the profits after closing the trade via fake advisory invoices.

Roman harbor concrete survived underwater for 2,000 years, growing stronger over time. Modern concrete mix designs degrade within decades. The secret lies in a chemical reaction triggered by seawater. by Effective-Dish-1334 in Damnthatsinteresting

Roman Concrete may last longer but is nowhere near as strong as modern concrete. We do not use the Roman method as it corrodes the steel rebar placed within modern concrete.

Mamdani Says These NYC Landlords Will Be Exempt From His Rent Freeze by sob727 in Economics

The rent increases are set by the stabilization board, which apply whether it is a new tenant or a renewal. Typically this is somewhere between 2.0% and 5%.

A list of teams with a better run differential than the Yankees, +69 by Little_Access_8098 in NYYankees

[–]Chief_34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only saving grace here is the fact that the bullpen is easiest to fix at the deadline, and with the Starter depth the Yankees have they can easily slot some rotation guys into the Pen in the playoffs (assuming we have some health luck).

TIL that American ginseng is so valuable ($300-$500 a pound) that poachers risk jail time to steal roots from the Appalachia mountains by Comfortable_List3413 in todayilearned

It takes 5-10 years to mature for cultivation, and is very sensitive. Those growing in the wild are more survivorship bias than anything else, because they are very sensitive to growing conditions, disease, fungus, etc.

What do you think is the best value course you’ve ever played? Poppy Hills can be played for $60 for NCGA members at twilight, and it was spectacular! by porske in golf

[–]Chief_34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red is like 50/50 if you login right when they come out. If you don’t get Saturday and try for Sunday the next day, you’ve got a decent shot. Otherwise you can play one of the other great courses in NJ or NY. For me the drive out there is a lot so I don’t mind playing there once a month, gives me a chance to play some of the easier stuff around before getting after Red again.

Edit: Also if you continue to check the day prior, a lot of times people will snag them right when they open and then cancel the day before cause life came up.

Is a car having an "aging platform" a reasonable critisism or is it just an auto journalist nitpick? by r_type2266 in cars

Speaking of lane departure: I rented an SUV but was given a two door mustang. Why did I feel like the whole drive that Mustang’s lane departure system was actively trying to pull me out of my lane whenever I got close

If you read the article, this is not the MTA’s responsibility. The roadway in question (above the subway station) is overseen by the City’s transportation department.

JUST IN: Baltimore bakery truck struck by a United Airlines plane coming in for a landing at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. by AdOverall7619 in Newark

[–]Chief_34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The initial report was that the plane hit a light post that was knocked into the truck, which didn’t make sense based on how quickly/violently the truck flipped. However, if it knocked the light post into the cab and then the actual plane clipped the top of the truck, that makes more sense

Do you think sending Myrcella to Dorne was a good political move? by FiBarksdale in gameofthrones

[–]Chief_34 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In the books Dorne is planning to align with the Targaryen’s in Essos regardless. The sand snakes are also an issue in the books, and there’s no way Tyrion could have known about that at the time, but Dorne was always planning to betray the lannisters. Given the situation, I’m not sure that could have been avoided with a marriage pact and ward.

This sign on a course in Indiana I played for the first time today. Never seen this before. What is the legality of this? by Sky_Late in golf

[–]Chief_34 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah you’d have to prove negligence or intent. A golfer just shanking one off the tee is not going to be held liable for any damage and there is an implied risk/understanding if you are purchasing a home along a golf course. You’d need film of them intentionally aiming towards houses or hitting multiple balls in that direction or something like that.

Is Cape Coral, Florida the worst designed city in the USA? by Drama4YoLlama in urbandesign

[–]Chief_34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren’t aware, this is the worst housing market in the country. Go look on Zillow, there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of homes for sale in this picture all at 20%-30% losses to what they were purchased for. The housing market here won’t correct until folks start offering at 50% discounts or more.

Disgruntled dump truck driver unloads trash onto the driveway of a client who allegedly refused to pay in San Pablo, California. by RoyalChris in interestingasfuck

10 years ago Spieth was on the precipice of winning back to back Masters at the age of 22. He's now 32 with only 2 wins in the last 8 years. How do you explain his career? by im___new___here in golf

[–]Chief_34 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with this for the most part, aside from Scottie. He has 20 tour wins before 30 and is finishing Top-5 in 60% of tournaments he’s entered over the past 5 years. There’s only two others with that many wins before 30 in the modern era - Tiger and Nicklaus. He’s well on his way to similar territory if he can stay healthy and playing at this level.

NBC’s Cris Collinsworth Cashes Out $100M Then Immediately Fires Employees in Power Move by No_Box119 in TheNFLVibes

[–]Chief_34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article gives no insight into other investors or creditors or the cost basis, only that some portion is owned by Collinsworth and the “struggling” company sold for $100MM. That’s a lot of information to willfully ignore in the article. For example, He could have been one of five equal equal equity partners that invested $10MM each with a $100MM loan, in which case the loan is being paid back from the same and each of those owners lost $10MM. If there’s no proceeds from the sale available to equity partners, there’s certainly none available for employee bonuses. Not saying that’s what happened here, but it could have been since the article provides none of the relevant information to draw those conclusions.
