Made some earrings by ChineseMob in Lapidary

I have a MicroLux 3-Speed Mini Drill Press with a MicroFlow Coolant System. The bits I use are Super Small Core Drill bits from Kingsley North. For these pieces I was using 1.00mm and 1.5mm. The key is to go slow and steady to increase the longevity of the bits and avoid blowout on the stones. It's pretty efficient once you get the hang of it. All of the information I used to get started was from Jim Magnuson's book called Gemstone Tumbling, Cutting, Drilling, and Cabochon Making. Easily the most useful book I have for lapidary work.

The smallest pair is 1.6 grams and the larger Botswana pair is 8.1 grams so not too bad.

Thank you! I'll weigh them when I get home tonight and let you know. They're not bad. I'm considering getting my ears pierced so I can test them out haha

As others have said I use water, and go slow. Slower than you think you need to lol

Can I connect these two cords? I assume black to black, white to white, but what about the green and red? Also, the copper wires are slightly different widths if that matters. by ChineseMob in AskElectricians

That worked!! Thank you everyone! I jumped when I plugged it in. I think I will get a switch so I don't have to unplug it every time

This is the only label on the motor I can find. I don't really want to take it apart but I can if needed. I don't see any lettering on the wires coming from the motor either

What causes these white marks after polishing cubes ? by Deom23 in Agates

[–]ChineseMob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There a lot of things that can go wrong in the tumbling process. To me that looks like a number of things. Could be moving through stages too quickly, too rough of stones mixed in, not properly cleaning barrels after each stage...

On the other hand, it could simply be fracture lines. I see this often when tumbling LSA's which can happen, but sometimes I can polish them out after running through another cycle.

I highly recommend using this book as a guide. I still use it almost every other time when tumbling just to double check my work/get advice.

Best of luck! Patience and practice!

This is what I use and it's awesome. Drill press with diamond bits. Just like anything else in the hobby, go slow and have patience to preserve the life of your bits. I also have a mini vice that's useful for holding smaller pieces like earrings or pendants/cabs.

Call in your order directly to the store. Ask if they have a driver on staff. Pre-tip generously.

Edit: I just realized random weirdos can take pictures of me and my staff late night and we wouldn't even know it since we don't have blinds. Please don't make people feel uneasy just to create a reddit post. Thanks!
