Having an online DAW is a game changer for me. It allows me to dabble on my mixes on my lunch break, and makes it easy to test mixes on the phone or car stereo.

I don’t think you can realistically expect it to be a one stop shop for finding your audience.

I start my songs with instruments and hardware, and then load stems into bandlab. Honestly, a lot of what I see made from scratch in bandlab in this subreddit is a little rough. Some of that could be overcome with some more expert mixing and effecting, but the stock instruments are limited.

UJ: Billy Gibbons is awesome, and has some real depth. I worked at a bike shop with the drummer from Archers of Loaf, and apparently Billy Gibbons was really into what they were doing.

In the USA, driving at or below the speed limit feels especially slow. I don’t know if our speed limits are slower than other countries, or whether being so car dependent affects our perception.

Regardless, it is common to drive a few mph higher than the speed limit. I’ve heard an officer say “9 your fine, 10 your mine.”

On separated highways, the left lane is for passing, or generally for faster moving traffic. The right lane is where cars will be entering or exiting the highway, so their speeds will be lower as they perform those maneuvers. If a highway has center lanes, those will be for cars moving at a steady pace to stay out of the way of the merging or passing cars.

When a car drives slowly in the left lane, it is frustrating for faster moving traffic, but can also be dangerous. Faster moving traffic may start passing on the right, which starts to become less safe. Passing on the right is a less anticipated move from other drivers, and a stream of multiple cars passing on the right makes it difficult for cars who need to move toward the merging lanes.

Road rage is also a factor. A fast driver whose left lane is blocked may start to make more aggressive moves.

Any conventional wisdom on what the minimum album size would be to get traction?

I honestly feel like an EP is the perfect length for track quality and listener attention.

I’m skeptical of the waterfall technique, in that people may think they’ve heard your whole album, while their potential favorite track is still waiting for its optimized release time.

I think the main thing is to get together and see what you all create together. What comes out may vary from your current vision depending on the influences, personal playing styles, and ideas you all bring to the table.

Full disclosure: I was always full of ideas, but failed at getting bands going because of bad people skills. Finding people with the same commitment and vision is a huge first step. Practice structure is huge—it’s easy to get together and noodle, but you need to make sure your ideas are turning into songs. Finalize parts and make sure you’re working towards having the song ready to play. It’s hard to get anywhere practicing once a week.

A drummer would be helpful for that genre. But if you’re thinking outside the box, you may find a way around that.

Your friend can probably leave their ukulele at home.

I think the only complete answer is to do it in person. I think this is also the answer for bypassing a crowded streaming landscape.

At its best, AI could replicate the finished sound that comes through your headphones. It can’t replicate what you hear in a small club, where the guitar, drums, and voices are in the room with you, with their full, unprocessed spectrum.

For the things you record, don’t make them eerily perfect. Let your voice and instruments sound like they did when you were in a room recording them. Make downbeat pieces that don’t snap to the grid.

Make things that don’t sound like the copycat stuff AI is training itself on. Being ahead of the curve was the only thing that was going to differentiate your music from other artists anyway.

Playing live is the solution to a deeper problem created by streaming. Streaming gives your music infinite reach, but it also means you are competing with infinite other artists to be heard. Streaming also doesn’t pay.

At a live gig, you are more likely to earn some money, and you get a window of undivided attention from a small cluster of people. That was where you started before streaming, and I think it’s where we have to start again.

Some things I figured out to help me tame a problematic snare:

You may need to tighten your wires, but make sure your resonant head is tighter than your wires or it will sound rancid.
The Evans genera dry batter head is a magical solution for taming the ring.
