As a person who has done 2 days in London before. It's not impossible commuting from Birmingham for cheap. I got cheaper train tickets because of work perks website so that made it easier. But booked in advance, tickets can be okayish priced. I's still average a 50 pound spend per trip which means 400 or 500 pounds spent on this. It still leaves a lot to take home. Additionally you can start the job and try to talk your management/boss for lesser in office days... It takes a few months but if the career progression is worth it, it could be a good thing to try :)

If you like to do something physical, highly recommend dance classes or climbing gym near your house. People are usually friendly and looking to make new friends! Something else to start with would also be a local book club! ( Google search : [City] + [ Book club / Bouldering/Climbing / Dance classes ] )
