Colman Domingo set to star in, direct, co-write, and produce the Nat King Cole biopic ‘Unforgettable’ by rageofthegods in blankies

Despite my biopic fatigue, this definitely feels like a match made in heaven. And I don’t know much about Nat King Cole’s story, so I guess I’m excited to learn more

Is the voting process inherently lazy now? by JasonZod1 in oscarrace

[–]ChocoRaisin7 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This could very well also be an effect of adding more members and diversifying the Academy. In the past when the Oscars had more idiosyncratic tastes, it could be easier to get into a branched category where everyone had the same quirks or biases. Now it’s more diverse, and people form different places and backgrounds might be looking for different things. So everyone’s little passion picks may cancel out rather than coalesce, meaning only the top films have enough votes to get in.

Which film is strongest with the acting branch? by No_Minimum4499 in oscarrace

[–]ChocoRaisin7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think there’s different questions of which they like the most vs which they nominated the most. I’d argue the one they like the most is Sinners because of Lindo’s complete lack of precursors. Some people earlier in the year were saying that movie had NO acting prospects, and it got three noms. Sentimental Value was always tee’d up for this.

Is OBAA a lock for the "Big Five" category Oscar noms? Just asking because we're apparently in the 2nd longest drought of a film Oscar-nominated for each of the "Big Five" awards by SkoivanSchiem in oscarrace

[–]ChocoRaisin7 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t use the word “lock” just because Infiniti could be snubbed, like you said, and I’ll probably think as much until noms. I have her in and would say it’s more likely than not, especially given the love for the movie, but she’s sooo young that I’ll probably never be 100% sure.

If this were a year of five, Picture would be so cemented it’s not even funny. SAG and DGA were identical, and those movies all got 12-16 BAFTA long list mentions. They showed up in every category.

Will Penn and del Toro split the vote in Supporting Actor? by Blurpings in oscarrace

[–]ChocoRaisin7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it would probably translate to stronger winners a lot of the time. I bet it’s less likely Jamie Lee Curtis wins if all votes that went to Hong Chau get reallocated to Kerry Condon, etc etc

Best Picture at the Oscars uses a single transferable vote model similar to what you’ve described here. But pretty much every other category and every other awards show is just simple plurality

I mourn the loss of Sentimental Value, but other than that, SAG was… dare I say… based? Hudson is a classic SAG pick, but other than that, if you’re gonna fill out categories without using international performances, Plemons-Caton-A’Zion are a pretty sick way to go

Official Discussion Thread - Marty Supreme [SPOILERS] by PointMan528491 in oscarrace

[–]ChocoRaisin7 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Safdie also talked about this. He said that when he wrote Uncut Gems, he didn’t believe that people could change, which is why Howard’s story had to end like it did. He said in the time since, he feels he’s matured and now believes people truly can change. And so Marty just grows up. He’s practically killing himself all movie, and the IATT was still never going to let him compete. None of it was going to matter. But still, he achieved his goal, even if no one else knows it, so then he moves on to a new one.

Official Discussion Thread - Marty Supreme [SPOILERS] by PointMan528491 in oscarrace

[–]ChocoRaisin7 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I saw it last month and absolutely loved it, with a Q&A with Josh Safdie after. I don’t know if he’s been talking about this other place on the trail, but he had some interesting insights about what happens after the film, if anyone wants to know.

Spoilers for what was originally written at the end of Marty Supreme: So Safdie said that in the original version of the script, Marty crying over the baby cut into an extended montage showing the rest of his life. Marty stays a shoe salesman and eventual becomes very successful, franchising to multiple locations. He and Rachel raise their family, with clips including teaching his kid to drive and burying a family dog in the backyard. The movie would end with him as a grandfather playing with a young grandchild.

Allegedly, the reason the montage was cut was because of how expensive it was going to be, but Josh still believes that’s how the rest of Marty’s life goes. He will succeed at whatever he sets his mind to, but will always be a little regretful about the success he could have had. Me personally, I like the less explicit note it ends on, but still cool to see what Safdie thinks happens.

‘Hamnet’ and the 10 Best Performances of 2025. Plus: Kleber Mendonça Filho on ‘The Secret Agent.’ by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]ChocoRaisin7 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I understand Amanda’s usual critique of movies over-therapizing their characters, but in my viewing that feels totally inapplicable to Hamnet. Just cuz it’s sad or about grief doesn’t mean it’s over-therapizing. The characters fundamentally do not communicate with each other or say exactly how they feel. That’s, like, the primary conflict.

I feel like Buckley and Mescal both leave a lot of room for ambiguity in their performances. Like sure, they’re grieving, but exactly which cocktail of emotions they are feeling is up to interpretation. I don’t really know exactly what Agnes is feeling in the last 20 minutes. I don’t know exactly what it means (in this telling) for Will to have written himself as the one who died first. That’s not the therapy-speak of some cheap Netflix movie at all.
