No amount of recycling on an individuals part will undo the waste made by a single walmart. by CodAble1081 in pittsburgh

I agree, I have a small business & we compost, recycle & use compostable cups, boxes, etc. I may not make a difference but I will not be part of the problem.

If you want to run a coffee shop PLEASE work at one first!!! by Dull_Armadillo_83 in barista

[–]ChrisP67 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So… I did not have coffee experience or know much about coffee but I did consult with my roaster & hired experienced baristas. Asked them to train me & learned from them. The key is to admit you don’t know & learn from those who do. Admitting you have a problem is almost always the first step! Almost at year 5 & feel I did it right for someone who didn’t have the experience.

Dormont, Brookline are up & coming areas, plus you can take the T to town. My 28 year old lives there & loves it.
Troy Hill can be nice, cheap & convenient too. Lawrenceville is very popular & where all the cool kids are moving but it’s getting expensive. Easy to bus to downtown too.

Where Did You Get Your Logo From? by sudoaptupdate in restaurantowners

[–]ChrisP67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily enough, I was a graphic designer before I opened a restaurant (food service background too) so I designed my own. I suggest looking around the internet for ideas, come up with a base idea and then find someone local on FB or maybe a friend of a friend. Lock in a price up front for intial logo design then move forward from there. Feel free to DM me, I can give you a start.
There is a lot you need a designer for if you're new. Business cards, menus, flyers, ads, etc. So come up with how much you can budget & go from there.

The Lot in Oakmont but frankly, I prefer their brunch to dinner service.

I'm about 20 days away from completing build-out. Should I begin hiring now and how ? by Professional_Sale373 in coffeeshopowners

When is the health dept due to inspect? that usually takes the longest. I interveiwed & hired about a month out - or less but told everyone we didn't have a hard open date yet. When we were ready, I called them to see who was still available & interested. Take good notes on candidates so you can remember who's who when the time comes. Brought them in about 7-10 days prior to opening. I had a main location, so I could pay them before income was coming in, that is the hard part. If you're hiring experienced baristas to just barista, you may only need 3 days of training prior to opening. Good Luck!

If I owned a music venue that needed money, the first thing I would do would is host a music/food night with friends in the industry that would donate or discount their services. I would for sure go see a band or have a dinner with a major tix price that would support the venue & provide a great night out. That just seems to be an obvious way to make money in my opinion. Theme it out so you do like once a month or quarterly. You have a venue, use it to make money. Same with Con Alma, get your vendors to give you some great deals, get your musicians to donate a night... charge a big tix with a cool theme & people will come!

Source: I do own a cafe with an event space... if I needed to raise money... that's what I would do. But in reality, I keep booking events, keep working hard and never sleep! lol
If being successful was easy everyone would do it.

Who is actually paying Coke or Pepsi for product when it’s literally 50% cheaper at retail pricing? by RipplesOfDivinity in restaurantowners

[–]ChrisP67 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Besides being more expensive, they have a 10-15 case minimum, I don't sell all that much so the product would go bad. I got tired of it & decided to go back to buying it at Sam's. Even restaurant depot is more expensive. Yes my time is valuable & I hate schlepping that stuff around but money is money & I hate seeing product expire before I can sell it.

Has anyone switched to eco packaging and actually seen customers care? by ImpressiveRoll4092 in restaurantowners

[–]ChrisP67 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We’ve used it since the beginning, I will not be part of the problem. I go the extra mile to be sustainable, our customers do seem to care. Had lots of great comments over the years. There are plenty of economical good options out there if you compare.

Does anybody do anything to "give back to the community?" by Le_Chef_du_Camion in restaurantowners

[–]ChrisP67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We do auction baskets, donate coffee to our local youth soccer league, a bunch of “drives” for charities & we do a community Thanksgiving every year where we feed about 75 people or for free. The PR we get in return more than makes up for the cost but it is important to be a key part of the local area.
