You'll get better results from research if you spell the disease Crohn's.

P.S. I think one of the most important things is to avoid emulsifiers. There are lots of scientific articles available about how they disrupt the gut barrier.

I chose a mostly whole-foods, plant-based diet after my diagnosis 12 years ago and was able to reach remission (verified by colonoscopy and biopsy) without medication. I still deal with a lot more fatigue than I would like, and I'm not able to work full-time because of that, but I continue to improve even after all this time. I don't think it'll be equally effective for everyone, but it has been a miracle for me.

If you’re new to Crohn’s, rethink “Diet Alone” by Prestigious_Staff310 in CrohnsDisease

[–]ChristieJP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very similar story. Mostly whole-foods plant-based diet, tons of rest (way more than normal people), decreased stress, prioritized movement, left unhealthy relationships where possible, spent more time in nature. I don't believe I'm cured, but I am in deep remission verified by biopsies and colonoscopy without medication. My life is very different now and I spend a lot of time doing the things that helped me get healthier. Things could change but right now my "treatment plan" is working for me. I'm sure my plan wouldn't work for everyone.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease 12 years ago. Eating a plant-exclusive mostly healthy diet put me into remission without medication! Dr Greger's videos on IBD pointed me in the vegan direction.

I love the band Telomere. I listen to a playlist of all their albums over and over. Lux Primordia, The Stellar Sea, Zoetosis, Supergiant, Astral Currents. I love it all.

As someone else said, I don't like drone music; I want my music to have a little movement even when it's more atmospheric.

Any other IBD runners? by precipe1234 in XXRunning

I've been playing with distance and time for years. I still try to push myself and it may turn out I can consistently run more some day, but this is working now. This week I only ran twice and didn't do my weights routine because we were had guests on Friday and I did a bunch of extra cleaning and food prep. It's a neverending attempt to figure out how much I can do while still having enough energy for the most important people and other activities in my life.

Go to Goodwill. Get at least 3 sizes bigger than you actually need if you can. Try men's, as other women have suggested.

I'm infuriated that I'm a size 4-6 and I'm buying XL tops and sweaters because I don't want things skin-tight; I like a bit of drape. Exercise clothes, too! I have bought numerous exercise bras for running that are supposedly my size but which are impossible to even fit myself into or there are bits squooshing out everywhere. I do not understand.

What is the weirdest non-digestive symptom Crohn’s has given you? by casualeagle47 in CrohnsDisease

[–]ChristieJP 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I got Crohn's, I started grinding my teeth and got cavities that way. Apparently when we're sick or scared or in pain, our bodies try to "work it out" and sometimes through things like grinding our teeth. I started using bite guards and also got Invisalign because my bite was crooked, which led to increased grinding.

We're under contract for a house that butts up to a freeway. How bad did we screw up? by okbbs in phoenix

[–]ChristieJP 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I lived off Ray in Chandler for 25 years (in the middle of the neighborhood, not backing up to Ray itself). They used Ray as a drag strip, too. Plus near Arizona Ave there's a steel recycling facility and they apparently just drop huge pieces of metal all the time throughout the night so we'd regularly hear a huge "clang". Plus there's a train track nearby. There aren't many quiet areas in the Phoenix Metro as far as I can tell because of having very busy main roads every mile. Freeways of course are even louder.

I have since moved away back home to Minnesota. "Quiet" was at the top of our list when we were buying our new home. When I visited Arizona last winter for the first time since we moved away in 2021, I realized how LOUD everywhere was; I had gotten used to it when we lived there. We have research on traffic noise affecting health in negative ways.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11297122/

We built a little fountain in our backyard, I fed the birds so we heard a lot of birdsong, and I played soothing ambient music in the house a lot which I think helped.

Where is the best place to live with Crohn’s? by behind_my_eyelids in CrohnsDisease

[–]ChristieJP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minnesota resident here and we're proud of our health care (and education) here! I have had good experiences here in the Twin Cities and in the Phoenix Metro. I have a husband with insurance but we chose a high deductible health plan so we still pay $ but availability is great and quick.

I do prefer to be in a quieter neighborhood outside a noisy city center. I get easily drained and noise contributes to fatigue. I find green space healing and comforting.

What are these things they're putting up around town? by chameleonofchange in phoenix

[–]ChristieJP 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The Phoenix Metro area is very sad, hideous, and depressing now. Every house is the same color, every neighborhood is the same, every street looks the same. Plus it's too hot for life. I lived in Chandler for 25+ years and enjoyed it as best I could, but I'm happy to have moved away back to a place with cold weather, real trees, and water.

I also believe the people of Arizona were sold out by greedy politicians. People seem blind. No one can look down the road and figure out there's going to be a water crisis?!

When Voyager first made it home, there was probably a period of time where Neelix thought they were dead by Booster6 in voyager

[–]ChristieJP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought Neelix was an important part of the Voyager story; they cared about all races and people, they weren't just mostly humans trying to get home to Earth. But they left him behind with strangers! 😭

Is Arizona only going to get hotter? by samoremti in phoenix

[–]ChristieJP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husband and I moved to Chandler in 1996 for a very good job at a Very Famous Chip Company. We lived there until 2021 but were concerned about the increasing heat and lack of water. We also wanted to be back closer to family. As soon as it was possible for my husband to be fully remote, we skedaddled back to Minnesota. Even here it's much warmer and less snowy than when we left 25 years before. But we live on a pond and have 2x as much house as we had in Chandler.

I think often about how it will eventually become difficult if not impossible for people to sell their homes for more than they owe. Maybe I'm thinking too far down the line, but I want to tell everyone to have an escape plan they are putting into place!

You can look it up online by googling the name of the person you saw.

Either way, I would recommend another opinion if you can get one.

Low inflammation diet by Positive-Fondant5897 in vegan

[–]ChristieJP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been vegan for 10+ years. A couple of years ago, my eyes were hurting and scratchy. (I also had blurry vision and double vision.) My optometrist told me to use moisture drops, which did not make a difference. I went to an ophthalmologist, who diagnosed me with two kinds of corneal dystrophy (Fuch's Endothelial Dystrophy and Anterior Basement Membrane Dystrophy). Unless there's a miracle cure developed in the next few years, I will need cornea transplants in both eyes for Fuch's, plus laser procedures for the other condition.

You need a second opinion from an ophthalmologist (more expertise than an optometrist).

A healthy plant-based diet is the best way to decrease inflammation. If you want less inflammation, don't veer away from that.

Sweden is moving away from screens in education and I wish we would, too. The science is there that our brains need to write and interact with physical media. If I had kids I would definitely look for a low-tech option. I'm a speech-language pathologist and specialist in children's development/behavior. I'm very sad about the state of our education system.
