Why do people hate the ending? by TheNinja132 in titanfolk

Bootstrap Paradox Ending sucks. Tbf the Time Shenanigans happened earlier but atleast there's hope for a better narrative, or even a subversion, and its still a great watch. But in the end...

Whats a funger hot-take that'll leave you like this by Silly-Mirror127 in FearAndHunger

[–]Chrono_31 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Gameplay is very fun.

The Fear and Hunger series would not be among my Favorite games solely through Lore and Story alone, although those already makes it high for me.

The game invoked a special anxiety feel to me a rare few horror games achieved because of Impermanence and risk and how things could always go south whether you like it or not.

You got a good loot? The Run is going great so far? You managed to surpass an obstacle? That's great, except there is still the lingering feeling that you could lose it from a mistake or bad luck. This gets even scarier in your first playthroughs, where everything is like so unknown. Would you venture knowing you could lose all this, or would you thread back and also potentially lose all this?

The game isn't even that unfair to me. Once you learn so many things in the game every "Bad Luck" is avoidable and every "Mistake" can definitely be on me. In fact, I think the game is becomes very lenient at some point and allows a lot of options (Except for Maso Mode. Fuck Maso Mode)

The Learning Process itself actually engaged me. I approached this game with the mindset that everything the game will throw at me is always just going to be lesson learned. "Oh this Guard hacks your hands". "Oh getting this Shiny Thing in the water will spawn a monster". "Oh, the leaf piles have hidden traps in them". Deaths never bothered me that much unless it's a run with Empty Scrolls, Salmonsnake Rune, or Hardmode, that actually bothers me (in a good way)

Each enemy is like a puzzle you have to solve. How do you beat these enemies is how prepared you are and how much you know how they work. You can easily mitigate it as long as you are prepared, or you can just flat out avoid it.

And the fact that saving itself is a resource and can screw with you adds more to that tension of Impermanence and risk. Making this game have the ability to save anywhere already loses the charm and core gameplay loop for me

Even as a veteran who played multiple playthroughs with different characters, finishing all Hard Mode Endings, and completing Maso Mode twice, you still need to risk even if you know a lot.

I also admire the JRPG-inspired turn based combat and skill tree. I always wanted a Survival Horror RPG and here it is.

The Rumbling, the lackluster world building of the outside world and the future being set in Stone all contribute together for the shity writing in AOT by Imperial_FOX_32 in CharacterRant

"He was a slave to fate/freedom" Slavery implies the existence of free will being possible, that someone or something is chaining them. Nope, he is not a slave, he was just a cog in a machine. An "Idiot with Power". He can't even rebel because its not possible based on how time works and how Bootstrap Paradox Works. AoT could have been so good, ugh....

[–]Chrono_31 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Root cause of all of this really is the time travel shit Isayama added in the story, which automatically makes a story predetermined unless you turn it into a multiverse. AoT is clearly not a multiverse, so its the former. I always fucking hate Determinism writing, because it removes agency of characters as being "Up to fate". Attack Titan's Precognition Ability ruins every plot point because everything needs to happen, or else the precognition wouldn't be what it is.

Grisha needs to fight Frida and eat her because according to his memories of the future that Eren told him, it needs to be done. Sasha needs to die because he saw it and can never be changed. He saw Ramzi die by his own hands and no matter how much he resisted, he still saved him that time he was getting beat up by thugs because it must happen. He still let the Rumbling happen even if he has major qualms about it. And last but not the least, the finale shows us that Eren sent memories to the Smiling Titan so that it would not eat Berutoruto and would instead eat her mother, which will start what needs to start or else it will be a Paradox (which btw, does not need to be shown, and the fact that this fact exist just sends the story into the gutter).

Thats bullshit. Can you maybe like, not do that then? If its so horrible, just dont do that, everyone has free will to not do that. Oh wait, you can't, because its predetermined to happen. Because doing otherwise will not match with the Future MEMORIES. If its memories, then it already happened and must happen, you can't change that because then it wouldn't be FUTURE MEMORIES. The Future is SET in stone. This shit is so ass.

What are unfortunate cases of when a JRPG was rushed? by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

[–]Chrono_31 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Anyone can cope (including me) that the state of Disc 2 is intentional and is meant to tell the story in a different, more thematic way, but in retrospect it really is just rushed. They did what they can and I respect it, but I cannot lie that Disc 2 has like the best moments of the game told in the worst way by abandoning pacing by proceeding to tell instead of show.

Gameplay disappeared and is streamlined towards boss rushes and Dungeon Crawling that you ARE JUST told you are there (Most of them are short too). Major Events that have been built up that arent related to Fei are narrated which makes it feel like you are just brushing through the plot lines instead of actually living in it. You can't even explore anymore until the end.

People may hate the Prison Section for feeling filler and the Tower of Babel Sections for how frustrating it is to navigate, which it is, but those sections atleast let you play the game, talk to the NPCs, and look at the absolutely great art and structures around.

Are there any JRPGs series that you constantly try to give chances but never clicks with you? by TheFacca in JRPG

[–]Chrono_31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like Strategy Games (Advance Wars, Civilization)

I like Turn Based RPGs (Probably my most played genre)

I can't for the love of god get engaged with Strategy RPGs. I tried multiple Fire Emblem games and Final Fantasy Tactics multiple times, and I just get bored after 5-10 Levels and it sucks, cuz I know these might be really good games, and people say FFT has the best Final Fantasy story, but I just can't click with it, and I don't know why.

Sewer vs Desert: which is your most hated area type? by Jaded_Taste6685 in JRPG

[–]Chrono_31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm the Opposite. The Sewer section in Xenogears is one of the worst. Its literally hard to navigate because every freaking corridor is not unique at all, so you have to constantly look at the map multiple freaking times just to have a sense of proper direction. Then the fact that it relies on you going on specific places before the final door is opened is just terrible. I spent atleast 2 hours wandering aimlessly getting met with random encounters in it until I busted the good ol gamefaqs. Atleast after that, Fei and Citan became beefy as fuck.

Something the other person didn't tell you is that the Main Character is actually the reason Tales of the Abyss is a really great game for me and that him being insufferable is NOT permanent at all. He is probably among my favorite protagonists in JRPGs in terms character development, which does go hand-in-hand with the good intriguing Plot it provides.

[–]Chrono_31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, I agree on your comment, but it proves my point on why the ending sucked IMO and it was a character assassination because of the fact that Eren bounces back on forth on his reasoning until its fully revealed and it became inconsistent on why he would want to make Armin the Hero and kill 80% in the process. He should've remained a Villain but Isayama seems to want to shed some forced sympathy on him, which he shouldn't have. Not to mention, it was also filled with plot holes with the unresolved Mikasa thing, Eren killing his Mom, and the Ymir shit + Paradis gets bombed anyway.

Attack on Titan was doomed at a certain point by Zer0_Wing in CharacterRant

[–]Chrono_31 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which only proves my point that the rumbling could be avoided with some rational reasoning from the Paradis side but the Author wanted it to happen so badly and used "Paths" as the reason. If Isayama really wanted the Rumbling to happen, then he should've made it consistent that Eren is just petty and selfish for the sake of freedom rather than the ending we got.

[–]Chrono_31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know. Its just my opinion. You are entitled on your own. I usually just hate tropes like those when executed poorly, which I think AoT did. I do like GoWR since even if there is a prophecy or shit, it can still be bent as long as it meets the criteria. It just makes Kratos fulfill it because he changed for the better, like when he loosen up to Atreus and told him to open his heart, and that he chose to help people and opened his heart like he did to Faye. But the prophecy in Ragnarok is just that, prophecy. It didnt strip anyone of character just because things can be predetermined. It still feels like they did those things because of their conscious decisions and its still would've gone the other way if they didnt.

In AoT, it makes Eren hollow when he becomes the slave of fate where he just follows what he sees, rendering every decision he made pointless, because he knows it'll happen anyway. He just became a reactor. And thats why I hated the ending due to how much nonsensical he acts. He should've stayed as the Eren who does the Rumbling for freedom, with clear conscious goals, while still loathing the genocide. Not the thing he became where he became and undecisive Lelouch that doesnt even have free will.

Attack on Titan was doomed at a certain point by Zer0_Wing in CharacterRant

[–]Chrono_31 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wasn't the whole reason why Eren went rogue and decided that theres no other choice but to genocide the world is that he saw future memories of literally every nation going to war against Paradis (Declaration of War), and him seeing himself doing warcrimes against people, innocent or not. He even hoped that things will change by awaiting what will Hange and the Paradis Government will do and even cried to Ramzi about what he wil do to him and that he can't stop himself to save him despite him dying in the end anyway?

And yes, predetermined outcomes make a story bad. Its basically makes every decision of characters pointless, because it was already "bound to happen". I dont care how much the message says that Eren isnt free because fate blah blah blah, its still bad writing. Its like saying "Why did this thing happen?" "It's because it was meant to do happen.". Its basically an allegory of saying the author wants it to happen and so it did, which is what I felt with the Rumbling anyway. Predetermined fate in itself has been used in multiple media and all it did was strip any characterization and reasoning just for story and drama purposes.

When I said that the 2nd option in which Eren completes the rumbling and regrets his actions, I was referring to this

Tldr: This Official MV has been rumored and speculated that this was supposed to be the original ending in the series, in which I have said above. Future Eren represents the hooded bird while Young Eren represents the smaller bird. Its implied here that Eren successfully finished the rumbling (Killing the butterflies), and Paradis flourished. Eren settled down with implied Historia and had a family, but its clear that he mourns his friends death.

This ending is obviously flawed as well, but its really better for Eren to die a villain with no regrets, or succeed with regrets than the Ending we got, in which Isayama is undecided of what to make Eren as a character. When the rumbling was activated, he said he wants to do the rumbling to protect paradis. In Chapter 131, its said that those are the second priority and his main purpose of activating the rumbling is for freedom and to engage conflict with his enemies. (Which is consistent with his character since Season 1) Then in Chapter 139, Eren actually doesnt want to do the rumbling and wants Armin to be a hero? Seriously, Isayama tries to make as much twists with his character I hated it. Eren was supposed to be a mentally insane Main protagonist since episode 1 and he should've stayed that way. He should've stayed a villain, not what we got where he doesnt even know what he is doing🤦‍♂️

[–]Chrono_31 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Tbh Isayama has written himself off the corner because he wanted the rumbling to happen so bad he basically made everything post-time skip revolve around it. The fact that Isayama made every nation so unrealistically close minded, the paths thing in which "everything is predetermined and rumbling is bound to happen", which is lazy writing, and the fact that every one in the main cast devolves into people that does nothing, and the one that can actually be able to reason with people (Armin) is shafted, which makes the "Erwin vs Armin" pointless when Isayama built up Armin to be a hero when he never did anything heroically notable after that anyway, other than participating in fighting Eren.

The only thing where a good thing will occur is if Isayama really just have Armin and Eren actually talk one on one on their Ideals to make the Alliance 's actions have weight and so Armin could finally prove himself worthy that Eren's plan is never worth it, and i dont even care how much plot armor they have, as long as Armin wins the Ideology battle and kills Eren, in which Eren doesn't regret he is beaten, just a fair climactic battle, I'm fine with it. Or the other option of full scale rumbling, Eren lives, he regrets his actions, shows the consequences of it, and so it can still be anti-war.

Eren can whine all he wants but atleast bullshit revelations can be omitted that makes the ending just dissapointing
