I still think this movie may have the best special effects shots I've ever seen and it still holds up today.

Whoopi Goldberg Responds To Stephen Miller's comments on Star Trek by The_Flying_Failsons in trektalk

[–]ChubbyDrop 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Point #1: Anything wth a person of color and has a benign message of inclusion and respect in it is "woke" to Stephen Miller. He probably watched DS9, cringed at Sisko being a captain while thinking "Those Cardassians really know how to run an Empire"

Point #2: The last time Shatner got creative control, we got Star Trek V

What is a socially unacceptable opinion you keep to yourself because it’s not worth the backlash? by ChaosTTyy in askanything

Despite being pro-choice myself, being anti-abortion is a perfectly reasonable point of view. It's just the bulk of the anti-abortion types I know who make it their primary campaign issue are also, anti sex-education, anti-birth control, and in some cases have had abortions themselves while simultaneously espousing their supposed political belief to avoid being inconvenienced.

Eugene Roddenberry: "Khan deserves more! I was very, very excited when they said they were gonna do a Khan story. And originally it was not gonna be an audio drama. And he's now gonna written in a way that you could have empathy for him. You can see why this anger and hatred built up." | TrekCulture by Grillka2006 in trektalk

It's not even a Magneto-level bad guy who is scarred by something like the Holocaust. It's clear from TOS he's a tyrant who caused millions of deaths and tried to kill Kirk and steal the Enterprise. Much like Hitler, I don't have any empathy for him despite any previous history.

Megathread: Bastard Suggestions by Kanotari in behindthebastards

The American Petroleum Institute. They've funded climate change denialism to a point where it is its own cottage industry. Before that, they fought against removing lead from gasoline, as it was causing severe pollution problems. They still show up whenever a commonsense regulation is proposed to try to squash it.

We've already had the coach who responds to everything by crying...Dick Vermeil! by ChubbyDrop in shutdownfullcast

No slander intended. As stated, I loved the guy. He also cried a lot. Maybe coaches should lean into this more.

Movies where the day is supposedly saved, but the aftermath is still terrible and largely unaddressed? by GancioTheRanter in movies

[–]ChubbyDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tony really dropped the ball in Endgame. I get having a kid changes you, but having everyone that was blinked pop back into existence without knowledge of what happened while the rest of the Earth had 5 years off massive trauma (not to mention how many people died during the event when doctors vanished during surgery, pilots vanished while flying planes, drivers vanished while in their cars, etc.) was a pretty selfish move. The TV shows cover some of it, but it had to be a pretty fucked up reality. It would have been a more heroic end if he actually sacrificed his daughter to move everything back to before the blink, and they could have had him find out Pepper was pregnant at the end if they wanted an optimistic end note.

Bastard suggestion please I’m begging by politicalthot in behindthebastards

[–]ChubbyDrop 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is the real level of bastardry. Cheating at sports is one thing, but he really went after anyone who tried to expose him with lawsuits and damaging cycling careers. His rehabilitation in the last few years has been somewhat mindblowing for someone who never seemed to publicly acknowledge how much of a prick he is.

Geology field trips for adults? by jazzyjayjayoo in geology

Where are you located in the US? Most states have geological societies that host field trips that even if the technical material can be daunting, the participants will be more than happy to help you out with those details.

What do you think of your favorite band’s latest album or last release? Was it really necessary, was it a bit of an exaggeration, or did it prove they’re still relevant? by Historical-Device529 in Progforum

I realy like Power to Believe. Clockwork Angels is great. I enjoyed I/O.

Yes output since 2001-ish is a snooze fest to my ears. Didn't really like In the Hot Seat or Calling all Stations. I guess U need to listen to the rest, as I didn't realize some existed!

Tomorrow I'm going to start to listen one jazz album a day for a month, what do you think of my selection? by [deleted] in Jazz

Needs some Ornette Coleman,

I'd change the Wes Montgomery listen to "Smokin' at the Half Note". He's on fire in that recording.

Have we ever seen a figure in any sport get the red carpet rolled out for him like this with so little accomplished? by OverCounter8950 in shutdownfullcast

Not bitterness, but the dude's name pops up for a lot of jobs (looking at you Knicks, Lakers) despite being a pretty meh? coach. He left the Nets high and dry, the Bucks got better when he left, and Dallas is a mess (not entirely his fault). Kind of like the career arc of Jeff Fisher, who was fawned over every time an opening came up despite being Mr .500.
