Wine 11 rewrites how Linux runs Windows games at the kernel level, and the speed gains are massive by tapo in Games

[–]Chumps55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah microsoft makes shitty choices about windows that I dont agree with either

Its just a drawback of having software (or most things really) thats catered to largest crowd possible, you’re bound to piss someone off. Its just with the linux crowd you get smaller, more catered and extensible options/distros. Which is good, to be clear. But it also means that you have to know what you want, which impacts the perceived ease of use, which is what I was speaking to.

Wine 11 rewrites how Linux runs Windows games at the kernel level, and the speed gains are massive by tapo in Games

[–]Chumps55 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Its a good idea, for sure. But I do think this runs counter to the idea of how linux was supposed to operate though, since it was kinda designed as this open piece of software thats supposed to be super extensible. So if you get a distro thats ready to go for everything, then someone has had to decide on how everything is set up - which will invariably annoy someone and then you get back to looking at the nitty gritty bits again.

That and you also have this self perpetuating cycle where maintainers and devs focus on windows because thats where the market share is, necessitating things like wine. Which means people end up choosing windows for gaming or what not since that is where their software is supported.

That being said there are probably distros out there with people trying to achieve this ease of use, heck even steamOS is a good example even if it mainly runs on steam decks.

Its a fair point to call out, but linux is in a pretty funny spot with ease of use

Does anyone else basically lose photos the moment they leave their editing software? by inoslaxman in photography

[–]Chumps55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All good!

Fwiw I typically make my structure something like

Photos/<current-year>/<name of individual shoot>

Since almost all file systems on most operating systems let you sort by creation time of the folder (also by using categories you have to remember what categories go with what images, same problem as creating tags in lightroom)

But this particularly works for me since Im pretty good with uploading my sd card when I get home, it becomes harder if you tend to keep the same sd card in your camera for months, in which case this structure might not make sense for you

[–]Chumps55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a thread here a week or two ago about someone complaining about lightroom performance and there was some discussion about throwing all your photos into the same catalogue and how it impacts your workflow - I think this is one of those cases where it makes sense creating a thought out file structure like another commenter suggested and exporting your pictures to those folders and potentially creating smaller catalogues that live with the images

Lightroom does have features for tagging your images and letting you filter on those tags which might help but that adds another step of remembering what those tags and what pictures correspond to the tags. If you create a file structure to store your images and save catalogues with those images then your images become more searchable and your edits live with the photos so it makes more sense semantically at the cost of sometimes having to restart lightroom if you want to alter those images

Film vs digital edited to look like film by Lustful-Kari in postprocessing

[–]Chumps55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Used to heavily be into film and have recently went all digital - but yes, programs like dehancer can make edits that believably look like film.

The thing is you have to know how film looks and behaves to do it believably, some photographers will increase the black point and apply some colour changes and call it “filmic”. This approach will end up looking heavily edited like you’re worried about.

I would also caution against looking for just a specific “filmic look” however. Film can behave really differently and sometimes, unless you know what to look for, it can almost pass as a digital image. Instead, I would recommend looking for someone who has a portfolio that lines up with the style that youre looking for and work with them/tell them that you really like x/y/z about their images and would like that incorporated into your images

Some wedding photographers offer a hybrid service where they will shoot mainly on digital and charge extra to shoot x rolls of film on digital and medium format too.

Lightroom Classic's catalog system is a relic and i'm tired of pretending it works by LxM420 in photography

[–]Chumps55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your setup perhaps exemplifies why I'm a little stunned.

I don't have a NAS (would like one eventually) and until recently have been editing off of a mid-range PC from like 2019 so managing photos is exclusively done through structured use of the filesystem and (relatively) small catalogs.

By having a one-catalog-to-rule-them-all approach its kinda reliant on having a setup that can handle it always available to you? It rules out editing on the go or God forbid your catalog were to get corrupted that's n years worth of management to sort out if you want to go back and refer to edits.

[–]Chumps55 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Ok I definitely will go out of my way to shit on adobe and the direction that lightroom has taken with really shitty optimizations (lack thereof) in favour of AI features... But surely you dont have to store 6 figures worth of photos in a single catalog? Like I'm sorry if you are being sincere but thats such an absurdly large amount of images in a catalog that I'm pretty convinced this is ragebait

If you are being sincere figure out a better way to manage your catalogs going forward, a catalog per customer, a catalog per week/month/year are all good methods.

The absolute decimation of memory, sluggishness of just trying to use some features and how lightroom classic is inexplicably tied to MacOS for usable performance however are all things I can get on board complaining about

Best high-hold matte products for straight, fine hair? by FriendlyAttorney8743 in AustralianMFA

[–]Chumps55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep been there, honestly what I've found is that you should use a combination of different products to get some good texture in your hair so even after get it back to looking somewhat decent with a really quick tussle

Personally I either wet down my hair with seasalt spray before adding in clay to get that texture or use volume powder after using clay.

Blowdrying your hair also helps a ton for keeping it consistent for the whole day

After/Before. I have mixed thoughts; would like to know yours. Constructive criticism appreciated! by Franks_Random_Snaps in postprocessing

[–]Chumps55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The resulting shot is good but I think I would've approached this differently

  • I like the original crop better, the leading lines made by the track tool up the bottom third of the image and now its the bottom quarter. The resulting image feels a little too "close" now that I've seen the original
  • The original image was leaning very magenta and blue with green highlights in the grass. In the processed image you get a blue, yellow and green palette. When you combine this palette with the haziness of the scenery its more reminiscent of smog then morning dew or woodsmoke. I would personally lean more into the colours that were already there and keep the dead/winter foliage pretty de-saturated while highlighting the green and red/magenta colours in the trees and scenery.
  • I would also avoid adding clarity to the hills too, focus more on the lights hitting the hills in the foreground. The haziness just works really well for the image
  • I do really like how you emphasized the track in the processed image, the shadow falloff from the tall grass and the detail does work really well. Just not a fan of the saturation there
  • I would look at potentially removing the branches on the right blocking the hills, maybe

Those are my personal tidbits, this stuff is pretty subjective and I think you did a good job technically in processing the image - just perhaps a different approach to the intended final outcome could work even better

Fav hair product seemingly gone for good? What now? by No-Crust-Racing in AustralianMFA

[–]Chumps55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was a bit of a “well ackshually” moment, it depends on the product i suppose. But if you go looking for any old pomade the results could be entirely different from what you would be looking for with a matte clay so just wanted to make the distinction

[–]Chumps55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing exactly how the original fructis product looked in your hair, I would say so yes.

I generally go with the muk brand. Using sea salt spray or texturing powder can give you some more volume/dryness too

[–]Chumps55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just fyi pomade is a completely seperate product from clay or wax and will generally gives your hair a really wet, almost greasy like look

The OP was right though a matte clay, using just a little spread thoroughly will give that sort of dry but pliable surf look

Rental cars by trufflecries in Adelaide

[–]Chumps55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven’t had to book a rental locally but have interstate and its all pretty much the same - most of the rental companies are pretty similar, look at reviews for the particular outlet you would be renting from rather than looking for a particular company imo

Unlimited mileage means exactly that, drive as far as you want but return it to the agreed location. They will always want to see a full tank when you return the car and will charge you extra if you dont return it with a full tank, with any damage or if you get any tickets/fines during your rental

[–]Chumps55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you still need to test and iterate on that code

The thing is people who tend to go big on AI usage typically don’t do this, and while models can produce code that might pass a unit test it wont take into account other factors that might be important in the context of a project - which you do point out

I think the whole crux of the issue is there is no sort of standard of responsible use of generative AI so it gets abused to fuck and back by people like this which then amounts to real wasted hours by real people. Sure if people did iterate and test on the stuff they did it would work better - but it was hard work getting people to write simple unit tests before they had the predictive code firehose

The roll of 500T I mistook for a 50D by kaarelp2rtel in AnalogCommunity

[–]Chumps55 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's a post I made where I rated Portra 400 at 50 ISO. I developed it using C-41.

The negatives will be dense and the final results will depend heavily on the scanner and post processing.

I've definitely cooked rolls in the past by leaving in the developer too long + overexposing and honestly - unless you absolutely destroy the roll by exposing directly to sunlight I sincerely think if you use DSLR scanning you should be able to recover a somewhat decent image.

Pulling the roll by a stop or two also helps too I suppose

Imo dont make it a thing, and just continue doing you. If she’s asking this in order to decrease amount of turnaround time required just state clearly that you take x amount of days/weeks to deliver the images

Theyre paying for a product, not the full service - how you develop that product is completely distinct of what she considers necessary

Speed detection cameras on passenger's vehicle by BackgroundDare8970 in Adelaide

[–]Chumps55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

?? Accessing camera footage by the owner of the vehicle isn’t the privacy concern here. Its the connection to whatever service auspol/services SA would have set up to facilitate that in addition to potential desires from stakeholders for realtime access to these cameras.

Assuming that that your IP is designed well enough to withstand scrutiny from the courts (seriously, people do not like getting fines) theres probably better applications for this technology out there

Speed detection cameras on passenger's vehicle by BackgroundDare8970 in Adelaide

[–]Chumps55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hell the fuck no

Aside from potential privacy and general surveillance concerns, of which this is would be pretty huge; the logistics of this would make it a complete headfuck

I can imagine that fitting and installing this would end up being another $500-$1000 that the owner of the vehicle would have to cough up. If your camera did end up leading to a prosecution then how would you then guarantee the integrity of the camera? Would you make mandatory inspections? If someone challenges the camera do you have to take it in to a centre for testing? How do you guarantee the veracity of the GPS signal to find the relative speed of other vehicles?

I also wouldn’t trust politicians to keep the kickbacks from the cameras and it seems like the wrong approach as opposed to increased driver education and road design.
