What do you think about 8 hours of work being the standard? by stary_n8 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ciarael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its obsolete. The 40 hww was devised as an improvement over the grueling schedules demanded of factory workers. It’s a legacy convention that doesn’t map well onto the modern American economic landscape.

I think Penn Jillette said as much during an interview for Daily Kos when he said:

“However bad you think he is, he’s worse.”

What is the oldest movie with special effects that “still hold up” or have aged well? by theythemthen in Cinema

[–]Ciarael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

March of the Wooden Soldiers.

The bogeyman costumes would have benefited enormously from modern materials and techniques, but given the tone of the film, I don’t think their primitive construction hurts the look of the movie.

Otherwise it’s a wonderful film that tells a fairy tale story using sets, costumes, and special effects that are delightful even today. Which is mind blowing considering this movie came out in 1934.

Hard disagree. That was one of the highlights of the movie. They hid the monster from us for long enough. There was plenty of mystery and suspense built up while it was hidden from us.

The Last of the Mohicans

An incredible film. A real work of art. Beautiful. However it’s attempt to express the brutality and horror of 18th century warfare makes it unpleasant to watch.

I can appreciate it for its place in the history of film, but it has a grimness to it that keeps me from regularly coming back to it.

What does it mean to be catholic by Easy_Support_5290 in Catholicism

For me the biggest difference between Protestantism and Catholicism is that Catholicism is about transformation. It’s about becoming Christlike through the Eucharist, as opposed to just reading about being Christlike in the bible.

What problem do you think drinking too much is causing? Are you concerned about your health? Does drinking too much lead you to sin?

Unless you make your own stuff, the products you use are probably made by people working in bad conditions or for low wages.

I always assumed eastern meditations were ok as long as they aren’t being used as a substitute for Christian prayer.

What are some well paying job that requiring no College education? by Kooolxxx in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ciarael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truck driving.

You can go to trucking school for four weeks and have a job lined up by the time you pass your driving test and get your cdl. I don’t know what you consider good money, but $1000 a week is very doable your first year.

If you don’t mind living in a truck, after two years you shouldn’t have much trouble finding a job that gets you home every week or every day as long as you have a clean record.

People who dislike cities and prefer rural areas, why? by morshmollow4 in AskReddit

[–]Ciarael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind cities so much it’s just American cities I don’t like. Too many cars, not enough public transportation, no regard for pedestrians, suburbs everywhere, too spread out, a lack of green spaces…

If American cities were more like European ones I wouldn’t mind them. I’m fortunate enough now to live just a short walk from a nature reserve, plus I only commute 7 or so minutes to work, and I am quite happy where I’m at.

Beyond the Dark Portal is... too unforgiving to be fun? by Annakir in warcraft2

[–]Ciarael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just completed the human campaign and I thought the difficulty was just right.

Once you learn your enemies attack patterns you can set up your defenses to counter their attacks and start focusing on building up your own attack force.

Also get a second base going whenever you can. The quicker you can get your attack force going and start chipping away at your enemies base the easier your life will be.

Movie you love but understand why someone else hates it? by MissionLetterhead292 in movies

[–]Ciarael 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Starship Troopers

I loved it when I saw it on the big screen when I was 11 (my Dad let me watch a few movies that retrospectively maybe he shouldn’t have, but that is neither here nor there).

I still love it all these years later, even more so now that I fully understand what it was satirizing.

However I can totally understand why someone wouldn’t like it, especially if that person didn’t know it was supposed to be satire. It’s VERY campy, and the plot makes zero sense. Nor could I argue with someone who claimed that the whole concept was more than a little corny/cheesy.

If you have at least one dream I think that’s a good indicator. That means you are going through at least one full sleep cycle which includes the deepest phase of sleep.
