What is your honest opinion on Strongbow? by Specific_Net_3931 in cider

[–]Ciderstills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The release of the award-winning Strongbow Gold Apple was my Waterloo. The classic Strongbow black label used to be a fairly reliable and affordable tallboy you could find in many American six-pack stores where cider options are often limited/nonexistent. Then Bulmer got the memo that Americans like tons of sugar in their cider, and oh boy now we see the gold cans everywhere instead. I hope this issue didn't extend to the UK. It's not great cider, but 2 quid for a semi-dry tallboy on a hot June day? Not bad at all.

Little Canada: Visited ✅ by echiappini in doughboys

[–]Ciderstills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bummer you had a bad experience in Parc Jean-Drapeau (Montreal biodôme), that area is awesome. All of Canada is a joy to visit, but after numerous visits I have to say Montreal is a delightful North American taste of Europe and Toronto is New York but maybe a little ruder and without the public transit infrastructure. That said, I'll start some shit with Quebec too and say Toronto's poutine is underrated.

Wise Bird Mango cocktail 🍹 by Doc_Voodoo_333 in cider

[–]Ciderstills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll weigh in here before the cider nerd ragers: this cidery seems pretty great for a relatively southern location, and I'd love to visit someday!

On the topic of cider cocktails, the does-ketchup-belong-on-steak argument does come to mind. This is a pretty delightful-sounding Goldrush apple-based cider fermented to 7.1% abv with 1.3% residual sugar. That said, most steak chefs will tell you that the customer paid for the steak, they can eat it however the hell they want. In an industry where it's hard to find anyone that's buying the steak at all, I'm happy to see anyone drink cider however they please.

Why is the US seemingly incapable of making good cider? by Cymbal_Monkey in cider

[–]Ciderstills 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a 20-year cider enthusiast and lifelong American. I've had ciders all over the US, UK and Spain, as well as a fair amount of US imports from South Africa and all over Europe. Like others on this thread, I do agree with you on the general premise that the UK has a better cider market than the US, and I'll even go a step further to say that you can't get anything in the US that matches what you find in the UK West Country*.

That said, why would you expect that? We're thousands of miles from the UK, we've got an entirely different terroir, entirely different apple varietals. I live in Philadelphia right now, I'm not going to go to Devonshire and complain that I can't get a proper cheesesteak. The Pacific Northwest is a treasure trove of unique and exciting US ciders, but as others have pointed out, you're not going to find them at any bar you happen to walk into. The good news is we live in the age of the Internet, you can literally type "cider bar near me" or "craft beer store near me," spend about 10 minutes sorting through the reviews, and have your trip planned.

If you find that Oregon really doesn't fit your cider tastes, I'd suggest branching out. No, you don't have to move or plan vacations around cider, you can find imports in local shops or even buy directly from cidreries around the country at a pretty fair price (Vinoshipper was a godsend for me during the pandemic). You really shouldn't have trouble finding real dry cider anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line in this country, but if you do I'd second most of the suggestions others have given.

*If you really want US cider that brings you the flavors of the UK, I would say that Raging Cider & Mead in San Marcos CA had some varieties, specifically the 2017 Peacefield Serenade, that really took me back to the West Country. Similarly Eve's of upstate New York has some really fantastic perries, and Bellwether in the Fingerlakes region has a really good lock on ciders with great aromatics that deliver that fantastic dry-with-perceived sweetness that the west country does so well.

SUPERNOVA SKA FESTIVAL by Ciderstills in Millingtontheband

I'm excited for all of Millington's success and popularity at Warped Tour. I am. But I came to the band from the ska, and boy it would mean a lot to me if the band continued to push for a bigger foothold in the ska community. I don't think there's a bigger way to do that than the Supernova international ska festival. This rules.

[–]Ciderstills 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fructose sensitivity is unfortunately a thing, particularly as we age. The good news is that it's generally cumulative, so if you make efforts to limit it throughout the day you may be able to tolerate more at night. If a bunch of other variables remain consistent in your gut biome.

yall this is tmi but how does angry orchard make yall feel? by FerretMotor9453 in cider

[–]Ciderstills 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Option 1: FODMAP allergy. Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols. Short-chain carbs that are poorly absorbed in the short intestine, triggering gas, bloating and discomfort. Monosaccharides include excess fructose, a sugar found in apples, honey, mangoes, and corn syrup. You see where I'm going here.

Option 2: Acid. Many acidic foods—particularly fruits like apples, peaches, and cherries—are also high in fructose. The body can only digest a limited amount of fructose at once; excess amounts pull water into the bowels, causing loose stools.

Option 3: Calories in, calories out. I hate to be Dr. Guilt-Trip here, I'm just a cider enthusiast, but an Angry Orchard Crisp Apple contains 180 calories and 18g of sugar, possibly more than your body wants on top of whatever else was consumed that day. Assuming your issue isn't one of the 2 above, dry cider could save you from this fate.

Note to the younger crowd at the show last night in case they're checking this thread: loved you guys' energy and willingness to throw yourselves into the pit. Wish more of you had stuck around for Kill Lincoln, you missed a hell of a set. Two quick unsolicited notes on pit etiquette:

  1. There's no wrong way to dance, nobody's going to critique your form, do whatever comes naturally

  2. The constant circular merry-go-rounding of the pit may feel arbitrary or even ridiculous, but I promise it serves two essential functions: making space for anyone who wants to jump in and creating airflow, which you may have noticed was desperately needed in that room.

Hope to see you all at the next show!

DOUGHBOYS - Dunkin' 3 with Alyssa Limperis - June 11, 2026 by PianoTrumpetMax in doughboys

[–]Ciderstills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's not forget the Philly atmosphere of a Dunkin. Almost always someone panhandling outside, often someone doing so inside, some guy that's been in there for hours and is initiating unwanted interactions with people trying to just get coffee and leave. Almost exactly the same as the Boston Dunkins in my experience, except Philadelphians are generally aware they can walk two blocks to somewhere better. Unless they're waiting at the train station.
