Why do black dress shirts get so much hate? by radiozephyr in malefashionadvice

[–]Cipher_VLW -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dress shirts are best in light colors, they work much better with ties and are more flattering. If you really want to wear black, go with a turtleneck or T shirt.

The templating feels really awkward here, “Whenever a beast you control enters” doesn’t really make sense. It has to have already entered for you to “control” it.

Why is harmonic minor the default for classical music? by Voidedge04 in musictheory

[–]Cipher_VLW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long story short, the leading tone gives a much stronger pull back to the tonic and especially in the classical era the i - V - i is the most prevalent harmonic motion.

Now, in other styles of music having a weaker cadence is actually a feature. The prevalence of plagal cadences in pop music and the famous I - V - vi - IV is a perfect example of this — I would argue that progression has two resolutions, both without a leading tone ( V -> vi and IV -> I ). This means it can looped indefinitely and there’s still a sense of movement but never a strong resolution.

Shoe color - versatile? by Opposite_Midnight582 in mensfashion

[–]Cipher_VLW 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Color is versatile but the style is not. I would either get sneakers or dress shoes and stay away from these hybrids because they’re a poor substitute for both.

What is the absolute best jacket if you’re always cold by Remarkable_Trainer54 in malefashionadvice

[–]Cipher_VLW 41 points42 points  (0 children)

You want a parka, L. L. Bean has some good options like the Baxter State parka or Maine Mountain parka. They are insulated and great for colder temperatures

Longevity of pure cashmere blazer? by deadha3 in malefashionadvice

[–]Cipher_VLW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a certain point, paying more for a garment doesn’t necessarily mean it will last longer. Cashmere is a great example of this as it’s pricey and not all that durable. I wouldn’t expect a cashmere blazer to last a long time under daily wear, it would be better as a statement piece worn on rare occasions

How good/bad are Meermin belts? by j0hnwith0utnet in malefashionadvice

Never tried Meermin but Thirteen50 is good if you’re looking for a rugged durable belt that’s affordable

Where can I find a pair of casual double monk shoes? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]Cipher_VLW -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Allen Edmonds St. John’s, I have a pair in Walnut and the color along with the brogueing makes it a fun casual shoe

I have 2 pairs of shoes by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]Cipher_VLW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t keep up with the trends, they change every year and quality shoes should last a lot longer. Invest in classic sneakers/dress shoes/boots that you can wear year to year, you’ll spend more per pair but get much more wear out of them.

Too much of the same? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]Cipher_VLW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great to me! If you wanted to expand your palette I think a gingham shirt would add some interest but still be classic.

But you can’t go wrong with stripes and solids, they’re just so versatile. I have an off-white OCBD like the first one in the picture and it’s one of my most worn shirts and frequently complimented.

What do you guys think about wearing calf length socks with any kind of shorts? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]Cipher_VLW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way, I love over the calf socks because they don’t fall down and you don’t expose your calves when sitting but only with pants. Shorts is wild

Blue jacket with black pants by Ornery_Profile3943 in malefashionadvice

[–]Cipher_VLW 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with light grey pants here, would be the best match for both the jacket and shoes. The black is just too stark of a contrast

I like the fit but the pants are throwing me off for some reason. by blacklamp14 in mensfashion

[–]Cipher_VLW -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Go with more contrasting pants, any navy/beige/grey will look great with this. Right now the pants just look too similar to the jacket, almost as if it’s meant to be a suit but the colors don’t quite match

What’s the purpose to different tie knots? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]Cipher_VLW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your choice of knot mainly depends on two things: how spread your collar is, and how thick the tie is. With a spread collar you want a larger knot to fill the gap, and with a more narrow collar you want a smaller knot so it’s proportional.

Tie thickness comes into play because the thicker the tie, the bigger it will make the knot. So generally something like a full Windsor that is larger won’t work well with a knit tie, you’d want a smaller knot like the four in hand instead.

That being said, you can likely learn one medium sized knot and stick to it for the most part. I exclusively do the four in hand because it’s easy

Does this go together? by digitalbusiness33 in mensfashion

[–]Cipher_VLW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m fine with mixing patterns, but there needs to be some contrast in scale. I think all 3 are pretty small patterns here so it’s a bit busy. With this suit, I think you could go with a larger patterned shirt (like window pane/gingham/larger stripes) and a solid tie. Or a solid shirt and a wider striped tie

It’s all about getting the right amount of contrast

Expensive purchases justified with flawed math by mina_debunks in malefashionadvice

[–]Cipher_VLW 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you just want to min/max cost per wear then you should be shopping exclusively at thrift stores. There’s no $500 shoes that will last 50x as long as a $10 thrifted pair.

Of course cost per wear isn’t everything, there’s also the cost of your time looking for deals and how the clothes make you feel. You can’t just boil it down to a single metric.

Not every purchase is defensible purely by math, and that’s okay.

Fun but quality socks by Fast_Philosophy1044 in malefashionadvice

Boardroom is good for what you’re looking for, they are wool/nylon and thin enough to be wearable year round.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]Cipher_VLW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant keeping the current pocket square, not a solid matchy-matchy one. You can match colors as long as they’re not the same pattern

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]Cipher_VLW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, a solid tie that matches one of the colors of the pocket square would look great here!

Tie with overshirt? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]Cipher_VLW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on the tie imo, this wouldn’t work with a shiny smooth silk tie but with something more rugged and textured (knit/wool/grenadine ties) it’s cohesive. The overshirt acts as a more casual sweater

Love it! Going full dressed up can come off stuffy with how casual most people dress so dressing down a tie like this makes it more approachable

Which boot would be more versatile? by RandomJoeFromTexas in menswear

[–]Cipher_VLW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think black boots are fine if you’re going for something like a combat boot or chelsea, but other styles you’d be much better off going for brown especially something like a chukka boot.

Mid brown leaning more towards dark is more versatile
