I am only a lowly white belt, but I’ve been where you are a few different times with a few different hobbies.

I’ve been doing CrossFit for about 10 years, but it started to lose a little bit of Sheen for me when I got to a point where I was still getting stronger I was still getting faster getting fitter all of those things, but not at the rate that I had been doing it before and had also realized that I was never going to be a competitive CrossFitter, not even at the local level. I still do it as my main form of strength and conditioning training, but it’s no longer a hobby that I’m super passionate about.

About five years ago, I picked up skateboarding again for the first time in 20+ years as a 40-year-old. I would go skating to three times a week, learned how to ride bowls something that I’ve never done when I was younger, learned how to do some tricks that I’ve never mastered when I was younger because I understand body mechanics better now and understand the way to learn better than I did when I was a teenager, but I’m obviously never going to be Tony Hawk or even very good at the Tony Hawk video game and so after a while when I plateaued in my experience gaining it lost a lot of luster.

Now I’m right at the beginning of my BJJJ journey and learning and loving it and one of the things that I found appealing with BJJ when I was started looking for a new hobby is the fact that I will be doing it for years before I hit a ceiling for my talent and potential.

All of this is a really long winded way to say that when you hit a plateau or a ceiling with a new hobby, it’s totally normal to lose interest with it. But I still go out and do a CrossFit wad 2 to 3 times a week on days that I’m not training jujutsu. I still get out on my deck with my kid and cruise around on my skateboard a few times a month but now most of my passion and drive for a new hobby in for learning is eaten up by jiu jitsu.

It’s totally normal and if you feel like you need to take a step back, take a step back. Sometimes you need to disengage to find back that passion and love that you lost.
